Friedman Steamrolls Day 1b Field

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Adam Friedman
Adam Friedman

After a very unsuccessful Day 1a, Adam Friedman returned to the Mid-States Poker Tour Belle of Baton Rouge Main Event and rolled the field in a 14-level tour de force, bagging 356,500 to take a monster lead — more than double the next biggest stack. Not only will Friedman have the most chips heading to Day 2 on Sunday, he will also bring one of the most formidable tournament résumés, sporting more than $1.6 million in cashes.

Friedman's luck began turning early in the day, when he got it in with Jeff Grimes after a {4-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{j-Spades} flop during Level 9 (400/800/50) for a 76,000-chip pot. Friedman held the {k-Clubs}{q-Spades} for overs and a straight draw, but trailed Grimes' {a-Clubs}{j-Hearts}. The turn brought a king for Friedman, and he held on through the river.

Later, he had built that up to a room-leading stack when he played the pot of the tournament thus far, again facing off with Grimes. Both players had checked a {6-}{7-}{9-} flop, and Friedman checked again on the {q-} turn. Grimes fired out a bet, and Friedman made a big check-raise. Grimes shoved in after starting the hand with around 100,000, and Friedman called with {10-}{8-} for a flopped straight. Grimes was drawing dead with {a-}{q-}.

From there, Friedman turned the aggression up to peak levels, but he lost a bit before the end of the night.

Just six other players made it through the Day 1b field: Mihail Karasoulis (151,000), Josh Mancuso (128,000), Brandon Creel (110,000), Broderick Scott (102,500), Adam Simoneaux (69,000), and Richard Hairston (43,500). The seven survivors will join the 17 who made it through Day 1a to create a 24-player field for Sunday.

Rick McGown, Duma Lowery, defending champ Shawn Schoreck, Mike Lang, and Daniel Holmes were among those joining Grimes on the rail during Day 1b.

Schoreck's title defense ended when he saw a player open for a raise to 2,700 and John Galik call. On the button, Schoreck put his stack of about 20,000 in, and the opener folded after it got back to him. Galik snapped, however, as he'd flatted the powerful {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}. Schoreck had {a-}{10-}, and a run out of {6-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{10-Spades}{5-Clubs} meant his day was done.

Two-time MSPT runner-up Lang, meanwhile, flatted a raise from Simoneaux in the blinds and then open-jammed the {9-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{4-Clubs} flop for about 10,000 during Level 11 (600/1,200/200). Simoneaux quickly called with the {a-Clubs}{a-Spades}, and Lang politely wished him a happy birthday after he bricked off with the {10-Clubs}{9-Clubs}.

Day 2 kicks off at 11 a.m. Sunday, and PokerNews will be posting live updates until a champion is crowned.

Jeff Grimes
Jeff Grimes

Adam Friedman said he check-raised large on a {6-}{7-}{9-}{q-} board, and Jeff Grimes shoved all in. Friedman snapped with {10-}{8-} for a flopped straight, and Grimes, who started the hand over 100,000, turned up {a-}{q-}.

"Oh, good, drawing dead," Friedman said.

"Good hand, buddy," the good-natured Grimes said before exiting.

Schoreck Won't Go Back-to-Back

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Shawn Schoreck
Shawn Schoreck

A player opened for a raise and saw John Galik call 2,700. On the button, Shawn Schoreck put his stack of about 20,000 in, and the opener folded after it got back to him. Galik snapped, however, as he'd flatted {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}. Schoreck had {a-}{10-}, and a run out of {6-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{10-Spades}{5-Clubs} meant the defending Mid-States Poker Tour Belle of Baton Rouge champ is done for.

McGown Bluffs His Way Out

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Rick McGown
Rick McGown

Steve Bierman limped in middle position and then called 3,200 from Rick McGown in the cutoff. Bierman came out betting with 5,000 on the {10-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{6-Hearts} flop, and McGown called. Bierman checked the {10-Hearts} turn, and McGown took his turn to bet 5,000. Bierman called, and the {3-Spades} hit the river. Bierman checked, and McGown pushed in everything, 8,600.

"I put you on two big cards," Bierman said after tanking a couple of minutes. "I call."

McGown tossed {k-Hearts}{j-Diamonds} in, two big cards. Bierman had {7-Spades}{6-Spades} and took it with tens and sixes.

Friedman Doubles Through Grimes

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Adam Friedman
Adam Friedman

Adam Friedman opened for a standard raise in early position and was called by cutoff Jeff Grimes. The flop came {4-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{j-Spades}, and the two proceeded to get all in with Friedman at risk for 37,325.

Friedman: {k-Clubs}{q-Spades}
Grimes: {a-Clubs}{j-Hearts}

The flop was favorable for both players, and Grimes was fading kings, queens, aces, and nines. The {k-Hearts} turn put Friedman in the lead right away, and Grimes couldn't catch back up on the {10-Hearts} river.

Gates' Semi-Bluff Blows Up

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Justin Gates
Justin Gates

Three players checked to Justin Gates, who bet 6,200 from the button on a {7-Spades}{6-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} flop. Debbie Irvin called in the big blind, and the two others folded. On the {3-Clubs} turn, Irvin checked and then snap-called when Gates put her all in for 16,550.

Irvin: {a-Clubs}{4-Spades}
Gates: {k-Clubs}{j-Clubs}

Gates had picked up a flush draw, but Irvin had found a straight on the turn. The river {2-Spades} missed Gates, and he sent nearly all of his stack to Irvin.

Schoreck Catches a Bluff; Friedman Doubles

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Adam Friedman
Adam Friedman

Danny Drew check-raised to 6,000 after a player in middle position bet 2,800 on an {8-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{a-Spades} board, and Shawn Schoreck cold-called in between the players. The bettor folded, and the river brought a {k-Clubs}. Both players checked quickly, and Schoreck rolled over {a-Clubs}{9-Spades}, clapping when his opponent mucked.

At another table, Adam Friedman doubled up with {j-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} on a board of {j-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{6-Clubs}{6-Hearts} against a player who appeared to have bluffed all in with {q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} on the river.

Players are on break for 10 minutes.

Josh Mancuso
Josh Mancuso

Josh Mancuso just got it all in for about 18,000 from the button on a flop of {2-Clubs}{k-Spades}{7-Hearts} with {k-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} against a player holding {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs} in the small blind. Mancuso's two pair held as the {6-Spades} turn was followed by a {10-Spades} river, and he barely had his opponent covered.
