Wright Bags 600,000 to Score Overall Lead

Level 15 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Mike Wright
Mike Wright

Day 1c of the Mid-States Poker Tour Golden Gates attracted 194 runners, which brought the total field up to an even 500 entrants. That's 47 more than the last time the tour rolled around last spring. After 15 levels of play, Mike Wright finished the 41 Day 1c survivors with 600,000, which eclipsed the 511,500 bagged by MSPT team pro Blake Bohn on Day 1a, giving Wright the overall lead heading into Sunday's Day 2.

Wright's run to the top was greatly aided by a monster pot just before the end of Level 14 (1,200/2,400/400). After an {8-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{6-Hearts} flop, Nader Wahdan continuation-bet 13,000 from middle position and was called by Wright on his left and the small blind. The {6-Diamonds} paired the board, and Wahdan bet 24,000 after it was checked to him. Wright shoved all in, the small blind folded, and Wahdan stood up, looking over his stack. About 140,000 remained, and he opted to call it off.

Wright: {7-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}
Wahdan: {10-Spades}{6-Spades}

The turn was the worst card for Wahdan, as it gave him trips that were still behind. He couldn't fill up on the {7-Clubs} river, and he silently walked out the door.

Shawn Sandt (470,000), Jon Wurden (431,000), Brad Lien (312,500), Geoff Vail (291,500), and bracelet winner Adam Friedman (271,000) are also near the top of the counts. Others to make it through the day included Phil Mader (170,000), Kevin "Phwap" Boudreau (147,000), Will Givens (130,000), Chris Tryba (125,500) and Kris Wagner (73,000).

The appearance of Boudreau early in the day was a first on the MSPT this year for the well-known player, whose incredible story has inspired many in the poker world. You can read about his journey toward recovery from a traumatic brain injury here and here.

He was mixing it up throughout the day at a table on the edge of the room, and the theme of his day seemed to be river aggression, as he repeatedly put pressure on opponents after all of the cards were out. In one of the bigger pots he dragged, a player was already all in on a board of {10-Spades}{5-Hearts}{8-Spades}, and a player in middle position bet 2,000 into a small side pot. Boudreau called on the button, and a player who checked in early position made it 5,150. The bettor folded, but Boudreau called. Two checks followed the {a-Spades} turn, and a {k-Diamonds} hit the river. The first player bet 2,300, and Boudreau put him all in for 21,000 more. The player tanked it for about three minutes before folding what he said was a set of eights.

Boudreau showed {q-Diamonds}{j-Clubs} for a straight and took down the pot.

Givens, who snagged his first bracelet this summer, was the beneficiary of a different kind of river aggression, when he was all-in and beaten but a player forced the winning hand to fold.

During Level 15 (1,500/3,000/500), the last of the night, Vail opened for a raise in early position and was called by Sandt on the button. In the blinds, Givens woke up with an all-in shove for about 35,000, and both players called. Vail bet 40,000 on the {8-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} flop, and Sandt called. Both players checked the {7-Diamonds} turn, and Vail checked the {3-Diamonds} river. Sandt bet 50,000, and Vail quickly mucked.

"You're welcome," he said, showing {8-Hearts}{8-Clubs}.

Sandt turned over {q-Hearts}{7-Hearts} for a pair of sevens, causing Givens to celebrate wildly as he revealed {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}.

"Whooooo!" he said pointing at Sandt. "My man! I knew he did that!"

The positive situation was clearly a welcome change for Givens after he had already busted a few bullets earlier in the day.

Some of the players who weren't saved from busto hands and didn't make it through the day included former MSPT Golden Gates runner-up Jonathan McCray, Allen "Chainsaw" Kessler, John Holley, Lou Mortellaro, Josh Reichard, Ken Payne, Tyler Corbett, Jason Seefeld, and Adam Lamphere.

Day 2 commences at 11 a.m. Sunday, and PokerNews will be on the scene for live reporting to see who will take home the $120,765 first-place prize.

Wahdan Goes From Big Stack to Bust

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Nader Wahdan
Nader Wahdan

Nader Wahdan had more than 300,000 recently, and he's now out the door. After an {8-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{6-Hearts} flop, he continuation-bet 13,000 from middle position and was called by Mike Wright on his left and the small blind. The {6-Diamonds} paired the board, and Wahdan bet 24,000 after it was checked to him. Wright shoved all in, the small blind folded, and Wahdan stood up, looking over his stack. About 140,000 remained, and he opted to call it off.

Sandt's Kicker Good for Huge Pot

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Shawn Sandt
Shawn Sandt

Steve Sandt bet 8,000 on a board of {j-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{8-Hearts} from the cutoff and saw the player in the big blind raise to 22,000. Sandt announced all in, putting his opponent at risk for about 110,000.

"He's all in?" the big blind asked. "He said he's all in? I call."

Sandt showed {a-Clubs}{8-Spades} for trips, and the big blind twirled {k-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} in for weaker trips. Sandt would hold if the board didn't pair and a king didn't fall, and the {3-Spades} was safe for him.

"Sick Call" By Chad's Mom

Chad's Mom
Chad's Mom

On the turn, the board read {a-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}, and both blinds checked to Izzy Garcia, who bet 7,000 on the button. Chad's Mom called in the small blind, and the big blind came along. The river was an {a-Hearts}, and two more checks followed. Garcia fired 13,000, and Chad's Mom called off her stack of 12,000 or so. The big blind folded, and Garcia winged his cards to the muck. Per tournament rules, the dealer turned over {7-Spades}{6-Spades}, and Chad's Mom showed {q-Clubs}{j-Spades}.

Chad's Mom Already Stacking Up

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Blake Bohn has a new horse in the field.
Blake Bohn has a new horse in the field.

A player known only as "Chad's Mom" just scooped a decent-sized pot when she check-called 6,500 out of the small blind against a player in middle position on a board of {a-Spades}{q-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}. On the {8-Spades} river, both players checked, and Chad's Mom rolled over {a-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} for top pair, which was good.

According to sources preferring to remain anonymous, Chad's Mom was the benefactor of Mid-States Poker Tour team pro Blake Bohn, who put her into the tournament during the dinner break. Chad's Mom is reportedly the mother of one of the poker room managers.

Friedman Busts Kessler

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Allen Kessler
Allen Kessler

Shortly after exchanging words with Allen Kessler, Adam Friedman got the final word in and busted him (Friedman said the two had dinner together on break, for the record).

Kessler opened for 2,500 in the cutoff, leaving himself about 6,000 behind, and Friedman made the call in the big blind. On the {q-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{6-Spades} flop, Friedman check-called Kessler's shove with {q-Clubs}{j-Clubs} for top pair, while Kessler had {9-Clubs}{8-Clubs} for a double-gutshot. Kessler found no improvement on the {3-Spades} turn and {6-Clubs} river, and he said he won't be reentering.

Friedman, Kessler Butting Heads

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Adam Friedman
Adam Friedman

Adam Friedman and Allen Kessler are exchanging a few mild words, as they were recently seated at the same table in the corner of the room after Kessler's table broke. From the sound of things, Friedman took issue with some comments Kessler made on the live stream of the final table of Mid-States Poker Tour Firekeepers, where Friedman finished third for $45,000.

"You kept calling him the best player at the table," an irked Friedman said. "You know how many times he shoved all in? Like fifteen times. I was all in twice."

Kessler defended himself, saying the player in question made some really good calls, and the two ended the discussion after Friedman dragged a pot.

Chris Tryba just got all his money in with the nut flush, {a-Spades}{10-Spades} on a board of {6-Spades}{7-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{5-Spades}. His unfortunate opponent had turned a flush as well with {k-Spades}{2-Spades} and had to send Tryba about 25,000.

Players are on break for 10 minutes.
