Dan Colpoys Wins Mid-States Poker Tour Golden Gates ($114,156)

Level 27 : 40,000/80,000, 10,000 ante
Dan Colpoys - First Place
Dan Colpoys - First Place

Dan Colpoys made his big stack count, going wire-to-wire as the chip leader on Day 3 of Mid-States Poker Tour Golden Gates. Colpoys entered the day with more than one-third of the chips in play with 10 players remaining.

Colpoys will pocket $114,156 for his win after defeating Jonathan McCray in a 90-minute heads-up match. McCray scored just over $63,000 for second.

McCray scored the first knockout of the final table, hanging on with a set of threes against Rosie Paules, who had jammed a flush draw on the flop and turned a straight draw.

A little while later, Kou Vang was priced into putting a beat on Phanora Prom when he opened for a raise to 52,000, and Prom shoved on the button for 142,000. Vang thought for a bit before making the call.

Vang: {k-Spades}{6-Spades}
Prom: {7-Spades}{7-Clubs}

Prom had his opponent dominated, and the flop came {4-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{6-Clubs}, giving Vang a pair and Prom an open-ender. A {j-Hearts} turn was a brick, but Vang spiked the {k-Clubs} on the river to make two pair and bust his opponent.

Brad Zotti busted just 13 minutes later when he ran a rivered flush into the quads of McCray.

Jonathan Haidsiak, who had been grinding a short stack for all of the later stages of the tournament, finally met his end when he got caught shoving five-four preflop with his last 10 big blinds by Colpoys.

Six-handed play continued for awhile, and it looked like Kou Vang, who was making his third straight final table appearance in the MSPT, would threaten for the championship when he doubled up in a race against Kris Wagner.

Colorado native William Givens then busted in sixth. He never really got much going at the final table despite being one of the more experienced players ($300,000 in live cashes). Givens lost the majority of his stack on a misread right before he busted.

Vang's quest to break through for an MSPT title this year ended when he cold four-bet all in preflop and was called in two spots. The two active players checked down the {4-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{2-Spades}{7-Hearts}{7-Spades} board.

"Two jacks," Colpoys said, showing {j-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}. Wagner mucked his cards, and Vang raised up the {a-Hearts}{k-Spades} and tossed them into the middle face up.

Wagner called off his stack to a three-bet all in from McCray a bit later, only to see he was dominated with {a-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} against {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}. McCray rivered the nut flush to finish off the New Mexican.

Danny Gonzales, who had stayed patient with his short stack throughout the final table, doubled up once before calling off his stack in a blind-versus-blind shove from Colpoys.

Gonzales: {k-Spades}{9-Diamonds}
Colpoys: {a-Hearts}{2-Hearts}

Gonzales was trying for his second double with live cards, but a {7-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{7-Hearts} flop gave him nothing. The {5-Clubs} didn't help either, but his sizable rail still seemed to believe the double was coming. They were disappointed when the {2-Spades} hit the board, leaving Gonzales out in third.

McCray managed to make some headway a few times against Colpoys heads up, including a big early double when he outdrew Colpoys' KK. However, each time he gained some ground, Colpoys would simply hammer him back down by taking small pot after small pot, until finally Colpoys decided the time was right to play a big one.

He raised to 180,000 on the button, and McCray three-bet to 580,000. Colpoys made it 980,000, and McCray called.

After the {j-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{3-Spades} flop, McCray bet 1.1 million. Colpoys called, and a {6-Hearts} turned.

"All in," McCray said.

"Snap," Colpoys replied, flipping {8-Hearts}{8-Spades} for a set.

McCray tabled {k-Hearts}{q-Hearts}, and he was drawing dead. The meaningless river was the {2-Hearts}.

Thanks for tuning in to PokerNews' live coverage of MSPT Golden Gates, and be sure to come back next week for another exciting event.

Kris Wagner opened to 175,000 on the button, and Jonathan McCray three-bet all in. Wagner called off his stack.

Wagner: {a-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}
McCray: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}

Wagner was in trouble, and the {7-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{4-Hearts} flop only worsened things by giving his opponent a flush draw. A {9-Diamonds} hit the board, changing nothing, and a {3-Hearts} river cinched it for McCray by giving him the nut flush.

Kou Vang made this third straight Mid-States Poker Tour final table, but for the third straight time, he walked away without the title.

Dan Colpoys opened for 125,000 in the cutoff, and Kris Wagner three-bet to 310,000 on the button. Kou Vang woke up with an all-in four-bet to 660,000 from the small blind, and both Colpoys and Wagner called.

In a five-way limp pot, the blinds checked to Jonathan McCray, who bet 50,000 on a {9-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{2-Spades} flop. Action folded to William Givens in the small blind, who pushed all in for 190,000 total. The big blind folded, and McCray called.

McCray: {a-}{j-}
Givens: {k-}{8-}

The dealer wasted no time shipping McCray his three-outer, as the {a-Spades} hit the board on the turn. A {3-Hearts} ended Givens' tournament in sixth.

Kou Vang has been all in a few times but continues to survive.

Kou Vang continues to have alligator blood, winning the key pots he needs to stay alive. He shoved for 475,000 from the button over a cutoff open from Kris Wagner, and Wagner made the call.

Wagner: {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}
Vang: {2-Hearts}{2-Spades}

Vang won the race, dodging numerous outs on the river when the board came {8-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{6-Spades}{j-Diamonds}.

Jonathan Haidsiak open-shoved from the cutoff for 230,000, and Dan Colpoys called on the button.

Colpoys: {k-Hearts}{j-Clubs}
Haidsiak: {5-Hearts}{4-Clubs}

All looked lost for Haidsiak when the dealer revealed a {j-Spades} as the door card, but the last two cards were quite helpful: {2-Spades}{3-Spades}.

"I'll take a chop," Haidsiak said when the {7-Spades} hit the turn.

The board paired with the {7-Clubs} though, and his short-stacked run was finally over.

In a min-raised pot, Jonathan McCray check-called 48,000 from Brad Zotti on a {6-Clubs}{6-Spades}{q-Hearts} flop. Both players checked the {2-Spades} turn, and Zotti attempted to check the {7-Spades} river out of turn. McCray fired 70,000, and Zotti came out with a raise to 150,000. McCray announced all in, and Zotti called immediately.

Zotti: {j-Spades}{9-Spades}
McCray: {6-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}

McCray had flopped quads, and his slow-play had paid off when Zotti runnered a flush.
