Colpoys End Day 2 With Massive Lead

Level 21 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante

Dan Colpoys ran over the field like a freight train here on Day 2 of Mid-States Poker Tour Golden Gates Casino, ending the night with 3,907,000, more than double that of Kris Wagner's second place stack of 1,668,000.

We began the day with 121 runners, and it took just over 10 levels of play for the field to be pared down to the final 10. Along the way, we lost a slew of notables such as Brett Schwertley, Blake Bohn, Matt Kirby, Matt Alexander, Jeff Fielder, John Hayes, Mark Sandness, and Patrick Steele.

Colpoys had already build a solid stack when Olimpia May shoved all in before the flop and got called immediately by Colpoys in the small blind.

Colpoys: {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}
May: {7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}

May's run was in trouble, but she almost pulled out a chop when the first four cards came {q-Spades}{j-Spades}{9-Spades}{4-Spades}, meaning she needed a spade on the river to survive or the {7-Hearts} to win the pot. She didn't get there, and Colpoys hit the 3 million mark when other players were struggling to make it to 1 million.

A short time later, he ousted Day 2 chip leader Gene Gioia when he checked to Gioia on a board of {10-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}. Gioia fired 130,000, and Colpoys announced all in after getting a count. Gioia snap-called.

Gioia: {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}
Colpoys: {a-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}

Gioia had flopped the nuts, but it's better to turn the nuts, as Colpoys had. Needing the board to pair, Gioia watched a {9-Hearts} fall, ending his tournament.

Among other notable storylines heading into Day 3 tomorrow, Kou Vang has secured a third straight MSPT final table berth, having just finished eighth at MSPT Majestic Star and second at MSPT Baton Rouge. He'll surely have a wide lead in player of the year race when numbers are tallied up.

Also of note, the berths of Givens and Paules to the final table mean two of the three Day 1 chip leaders made it, an impressive feat of consistency.

Be sure to come back to PokerNews for Day 3 tomorrow at noon local time, when we'll play down a champion who will have home over $114,000.
