Karakikov Leads Vang by a Nose After Day 1a (full)

Level 9 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Pavlin Karakikov bagged up 187,800 to lead the Day 1a field.
Pavlin Karakikov bagged up 187,800 to lead the Day 1a field.

Pavlin Karakikov bagged 187,800 to log a tiny chip lead over Kou Vang (187,400) and 32 other players on Day 1a here at Mid-States Poker Tour Majestic Star. Leon Morford (147,600), Brian Zimcosky (129,600), and John Simon (108,000) round out the top five.

Amazingly, we didn't catch Karakikov in a single reported pot today. He explained to us that he build his stack almost entirely in the last couple of levels.

"I flopped a set against top pair and a flush draw," Karakikov said of his most critical pot.

Vang showed up late, as seems to be his custom, but he made up for lost time by quickly building a stack. Easily his most important hand came against fellow MSPT grinder Matt Alexander.

A player in the hijack opened for 2,700, and Kou Vang called from the cutoff, as did the small blind. Alexander made it 11,000 in the big blind, and the initial raiser promptly folded. Vang pushed all in, the small blind folded, and Alexander called off for 60,800 total.

Alexander: {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades}
Vang: {j-Spades}{j-Diamonds}

The first four cards came {10-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}, keeping Alexander's kings best but fifth street was the {j-Hearts} to send him to the rail.

With just about 90 minutes remaining in the tournament, Vang held a huge lead over the field after this pot we witnessed, but evidently Karakikov went on a massive rush to pass him.

Vang, who is coming off of a second-place finish at the last MSPT stop two weeks ago, looks to continue his hot run by adding another big score to his more than $500,000 in career tournament earnings. Karakikov is no slouch himself, sporting just under $150,000 in winnings logged mostly at World Series of Poker Circuit events in the Midwest.

A total of 126 runners entered today, and Karakikov and Vang weren't the only notable survivors. Also bagging stacks were Jeremy Dresch (80,300), Matt Kirby (72,800), Patrick Steele (60,000), Tim Ebenhoeh Jr. (58,300), Bruce "Hammer" Swart (45,200), and John "JohnnyGstaks" Hayes (38,000). Those dropping out included the aforementioned Alexander, MSPT Baton Rouge winner Shawn Schoreck, Tom Midena, and Terry Ring.

Be sure to in to PokerNews tomorrow for coverage of Day 1b.

Things You Should Know About the MSPT Majestic Star Casino

Level 6 : 300/600, 75 ante

The fifth season of the Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) has gotten off to a strong start. Mark Sandness won the first stop at Running Aces, and two weeks ago Shawn Schoreck emerged victorious at the Belle of Baton Rouge. In addition, the MSPT has announced a new and improved structure for upcoming stops.

However, right now the MSPT is at the Majestic Star Casino for the very first time. Prior to the stop we talked to Majestic's poker room manager Darrell Sangster, who was kind enough to answer a few questions.

PokerNews: The MSPT is visiting the Majestic for the first time. What inspired you to bring the MSPT to town?

Sangster: Bryan Mileski reached out to me expressing his desire to run his tournament in this area. We had several meetings and I liked the idea so I scheduled a meeting with my boss, and after Bryan's pitch we were on board.

Are Majestic players excited for the MSPT? Has there been a general excitement in the room?

We have been putting the word out about the MSPT since we signed on with them and have been receiving good feedback on Majestic Star hosting this event. We have had many calls about the event. So there has been a general buzz about this MSPT event.

What sort of things has the Majestic been doing to prepare for the MSPT?

We have put out a radio commercial, link and event schedule on our website, and blasted on our social media networks.

Can you tell us a little about your property and the surrounding area?

We are located in Gary, IN, 20-30 minutes from downtown Chicago. We also have a hotel on property attached to the casino by a catwalk. We have a buffet, a deli and a steakhouse on property.

Can you describe the poker room at the Majestic?

Our poker room as 21 tables. We run $1/$2, $1/$3 and $2/$5 no-limit Texas hold'em games, and also $5/$10 limit Omaha eight-or-better and $1/$5 seven-card stud, in addition to running daily tournaments that range from a $55 dollar buy-in up to a $130 buy-in. We also run promotions consisting of but not limited to "aces cracked," "hot seat," and "big-screen TV giveaways". We also have stud, Omaha, hold'em and tournament bad beat jackpots.

If you had to recommend three things for players to do other than poker while at the Majestic, what would they be?

I would recommend players check out our baccarat room, great slots, or action-packed crap tables.

Where’s the best place to eat at the Majestic, or what’s the best kept secret at the property?

I would say our steakhouse is a best kept secret. Great food and nice ambiance — you can't go wrong.

Alexander Cold Three-Bets Flop, Busts Gumila

Level 6 : 300/600, 75 ante
Jerry Gumila ran into a better hand and busted.
Jerry Gumila ran into a better hand and busted.

Kou Vang bet 1,725 into two opponents after a {4-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} flop, and Jerry Gumila raised to 3,700 from the cutoff. Matt Alexander woke up with a cold three-bet to 7,000 on the button, and Vang quickly folded. Gumila shoved, and Alexander got out of his seat as he made the call.

Alexander: {7-Hearts}{4-Hearts}
Gumila: {A-Hearts}{q-Spades}

Alexander had flopped two pair and was ahead of Gumila's top-top.

"Ace or a queen," Gumila called, but the turn was a {k-Clubs}. "Ace, queen, or king."

The dealer placed a {10-Spades} on the board though, and Alexander had his opponent barely covered.

Stroh Stacks One After Preflop War

Level 4 : 100/200, 25 ante
Jason Stroh got it in good with QQ.
Jason Stroh got it in good with QQ.

A player raised to 800 under the gun, and Jason Stroh made it 2,425 on the button. The first player came back with 5,175 more, and Stroh contemplated for a bit before putting his opponent all in for about 20,000 more. The under-the-gun player called.

Under the gun: {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs}
Stroh: {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}

Stroh had a dominating hand with queens, and his opponent was dead by the turn on the {a-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{6-Spades}{q-Spades}{k-Spades} runout.

Loizzo Rivered

Level 4 : 100/200, 25 ante
Dan Loizzo lost a chunk when his AA was outdrawn.
Dan Loizzo lost a chunk when his AA was outdrawn.

Four players checked to Dan Loizzo after a {5-Spades}{7-Spades}{k-Hearts} flop, and he fired 6,000, about the size of the pot. Ron Kruk, under the gun, moved all in for 9,500 more, and everyone else folded. Loizzo made the call.

Loizzo: {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}
Kruk: {4-Spades}{3-Spades}

Loizzo's aces were in the lead, but his opponent had plenty of outs with a flush draw and a gutter. The {j-Hearts} turn was a brick, but the {6-Hearts} river made Kruk a straight.

Loizzo Sees Best Possible Flop

Level 2 : 50/100, 0 ante
Dan Loizzo was all smiles after his middle set held.
Dan Loizzo was all smiles after his middle set held.

We found Dan Loizzo all in for 11,050 on a flop of {q-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}{2-Spades}. His opponent contemplated for a bit before making the call with {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}. Unfortunately for him, Loizzo held {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades} for a set.

"Nice hand," Loizzo's opponent said, but he managed to turn an out when the {10-Clubs} came to give him a straight draw. "Jack," he added hopefully.

The dealer burned and turned the {4-Diamonds} though, and Loizzo doubled up.

Schoreck Climbing Early

Level 2 : 50/100, 0 ante
Shawn Schoreck's good luck seems to have carried over from Louisiana.
Shawn Schoreck's good luck seems to have carried over from Louisiana.

Shawn Schoreck checked from under the gun and watched an opponent bet 600 on an {a-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{3-Spades} flop. Schoreck raised to 1,700, and his opponent made the call. Schoreck kept firing on the {7-Spades} turn, coming out with 2,500 this time, and his opponent called once more. Both players checked the {10-Clubs} river, and Schoreck's {a-Spades}{3-Hearts} two pair bested the {a-}{q-} for top pair held by his opponent.

Welcome to the 2014 Mid-States Poker Tour Majestic Star Casino

MSPT booth at Running Aces Harness Park
MSPT booth at Running Aces Harness Park

We're all set for a 5 p.m. kickoff here at Majestic Star Casino in Gary, Ind., for the third event on the Mid-States Poker Tour this year. Though the MSPT has started its fifth season, it's the first time it's stopped here in Gary, so we'll be interested to see what kind of turnout it gets. The prize pool is guaranteed at least $200,000.

Players will play nine 50-minute levels here on Day 1a, starting with the blinds at 25/50 and 20,000 stacks. A 10-minute break will be given every two levels. Each player is allowed one mulligan per Day 1 flight, so players reported as busting out may still be in the tournament should they choose to reenter.

Players are starting to trickle in and take their seats here on the fourth floor of the casino, and at least one recognizable player just walked in: Shawn Shoreck, winner of MSPT Belle of Baton Rouge two weeks ago, has returned to try to make it two straight.

Thanks for tuning in to PokerNews' coverage, and we'll be sure to bring you all the sights and updates throughout the day.
