Jonathan Olson Wins 2014 Mid-States Poker Tour Meskwaki ($95,741)

Level 30 : 50,000/100,000, 10,000 ante
Jonathan Olson - 1st Place
Jonathan Olson - 1st Place

Jonathan Olson topped a field of 368 runners to claim a $95,741 first-place prize here at Mid-States Poker Tour Meskwaki in Tama, Iowa. The Iowa resident and MSPT first-timer defended his home turf, triumphing over Mike Holm after about a two-hour heads-up match that saw Holm display classic "alligator blood," tenaciously hanging on with a shorter stack for multiple all ins before capitulating. Holm earned $53,188 for second.

A total of 71 players came into Day 2 hopeful for the title, but about half left the room without being paid a cent for their tournament efforts. That number included Jason Seitz, Grant Hinkle, Adam Zych, Ryan Hohenstein, Tom Hammers, and Scott Mahin. The bubble burst at the conclusion of Level 18.

Matthew Alexander, Gennady Shimelfarb, Steve Belland, Phil Mader, and Brandon "norajean" Meyers were among those getting paid after busting in the money. Also, Kou Vang was able to score a small cash, ensuring he will come out of the tournament in first place on the MSPT Player of the Year leaderboard.

Olson came into the day with a mediocre stack of 65,000, good for just over 20 big blinds. He won a key flip relatively early on with {j-Hearts}{j-Clubs} against the {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts} of Stan Webb and was able to build his stack to the point where he went into the final table third in chips with just over 1 million.

Joe Matheson was the first final table participant to fall, the victim of a slowplay that allowed former MSPT champion David Gonia to overtake him on the turn. Matthew McGrory busted next in ninth, followed by heavy hitter Lance Harris in eighth. Harris' fellow Minnesotan Adam Dahlin went down in seventh after his kings were outdrawn on the river by the {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds} of Olson. Chance Langeness and Frank Huschle were the next two to go in sixth and fifth, respectively.

Gonia entered the day with the top stack, and he used it well, continuing to accumulate chips throughout the grind. Unfortunately for Gonia, all of his hard work came undone in a dizzying three-hand spiral that saw him go from top contender to fourth-place finisher in the span of a few minutes.

Play slowed considerably three-handed, but former chip-leader Chance Lautner ultimately fell in third when he jammed over a raise from Olson with {a-Diamonds}{5-Spades} and was called. Ace-king was again the ticket for Olson, this time {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}, as the board came {k-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}, giving him the knockout and allowing him to advance to heads-up play with a lead of about 4.4 million to 3 million.

Thanks for tuning in to PokerNews' coverage of another great MSPT event. Be sure to come back next week for another tour stop at Majestic Star Casino.

Mike Holm Eliminated in 2nd Place ($53,188)

Level 30 : 50,000/100,000, 10,000 ante
Mike Holm - 2nd Place
Mike Holm - 2nd Place

Jonathan Olson raised to 300,000 on the button and got shoved on for 1.03 million by Mike Holm. Olson thought for a bit before opting to call.

Olson: {k-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}
Holm: {j-Spades}{10-Diamonds}

Equities were close, but it looked great for Holm to double when the door card was reveal: {10-Spades}. Unfortunately for him, it was followed by a {7-Clubs} and {k-Spades}. The turn was the {4-Spades}, giving Olson two pair.

"I'm dead," Holm said.

Not quite, since he now had a flush draw. A ten would do it for him as well, but it was Olson improving to a boat on the {4-Hearts} river. The players shook hands to conclude the match.

Holm Doubles Again

Level 29 : 40,000/80,000, 10,000 ante
Mike Holm doubled once more.
Mike Holm doubled once more.

Mike Holm called a preflop raise and checked a {9-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{a-Clubs} flop. Jonathan Olson bet 350,000, and Holm moved in for about 1 million more. Olson got out of his seat and tried to work out Holm's hand.

"I think you would have repopped me with ace-ten or ace-nine," he said. "Queen-jack? Ace-eight, ace-seven, ace-six? Those make sense..."

Finally, he called.

Holm: {10-Hearts}{9-Clubs}
Olson: {a-Spades}{4-Hearts}

Olson needed help, as his opponent had flopped bottom two. He didn't get it on the {5-Hearts} turn or {2-Clubs} river.

Holm Doubles

Mike Holm doubled up.

Mike Holm limped in, and Jonathan Olson raised to 450,000. Holm shoved all in, and Olson called.

Holm: {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}
Olson: {6-Hearts}{6-Spades}

Holm had slowplayed his big pair, and he was in good shape to double. The flop came {7-Spades}{9-Hearts}{8-Spades}, giving Olson a straight draw.

"Really?" Holm asked.

"Gotta make it exciting," Olson said.

The turn and river were bricks though: {a-Clubs} and {2-Spades}.

Chance Lautner Eliminated in 3rd Place ($33,083)

Level 28 : 30,000/60,000, 10,000 ante
Chance Lautner - 3rd Place
Chance Lautner - 3rd Place

Jonathan Olson raised to 120,000 in the small blind and called a shove for about 755,000 from Chance Lautner in the big blind.

Lautner: {a-Diamonds}{5-Spades}
Olson: {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}

Olson had a lead, and it grew as the {k-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} flop gave him kings. In need of running cards, Lautner got one in the {3-Diamonds}, bringing a flush draw.

"Easy on the diamonds," Olson told the dealer.

"Always a sweat," Mike Holm said.

A {q-Hearts} fell, sealing Lautner's demise.

David Gonia Eliminated in 4th Place ($26,594)

Level 26 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
David Gonia - 4th Place
David Gonia - 4th Place

Mike Holm opened to 85,000 in the cutoff, and David Gonia three-bet to 185,000 in the small blind. Holm called, and the two took in a {j-Hearts}{a-Clubs}{q-Clubs} flop. Gonia continued for 175,000 and was called, seeing a {2-Diamonds} turn. Gonia loaded up the second bullet and fired: 325,000. Holm thought long and hard this time, leaning back in his chair and checking the tournament information screen. He finally called, and action went check-check on the {4-Spades} river.

"Sixes," Gonia said.

Holm had it beat: {a-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} for a pair of aces.

The next hand, Gonia opened for 85,000 on the button and got three-bet to 200,000 by Chance Lautner. Gonia jammed, and Lautner thought for about a minute before opting for a call.

"Sixes again," Gonia said, flipping {6-Spades}{6-Hearts}.

This time he had gotten the money in ahead as Lautner had {a-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}.

The dealer spread the flop: {q-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}, a disaster for Gonia since it gave his opponent trips.

"You still have outs," Jonathan Olson said.

That was only true for about five more seconds, as the {a-Spades} peeled off on the turn for quads. A cruel {6-Clubs} completed the board, and Gonia was left with just a few big blinds.

Gonia was eliminated by Holm's two pair a few hands later.

Frank Huschle - 5th Place
Frank Huschle - 5th Place

Mike Holm opened for 85,000 in the cutoff, and Jonathan Olson called on the button. Frank Huschle put his last 140,000 in from the big blind, and both opponents called, checking down the {3-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{9-Spades} board.

Olson tabled {a-Hearts}{j-Spades} for a pair of jacks.

"I almost hit a flush," Huschle said, showing {6-Clubs}{5-Clubs} for missed clubs on the turn.

Almost only counts in horseshoes, darts, and hand grenades, as they say, so Huschle grabbed the fifth-place payout ticket.

Chance Langeness open-shoved the button for 440,000, and Mike Holm asked for a count before interjecting.

"Whatever it is, I call it."

Jonathan Olson folded the big blind.

Langeness: {q-Hearts}{10-Clubs}
Holm: {a-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}

The board ran out in Holm's favor: {9-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}, and he collected his neighbor's stack.

Adam Dahlin - 7th Place

Jonathan Olson opened for 85,000, and Adam Dahlin shoved for 557,000 from middle position. Olson asked for a count, and he called after being quoted 557,000 more.

Dahlin: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Olson: {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}

The flop came {q-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{4-Spades}, giving Olson a flush draw. Dahlin got out of his seat and looked away from the table as if he couldn't bear to watch. The {7-Spades} turn was a blank. The dealer burned and brought the final card from the deck: {a-Spades}. Dahlin collected his bag and briskly walked to the payout desk.

Lance Harris Eliminated in 8th Place ($10,460)

Level 25 : 15,000/30,000, 4,000 ante
Lance Harris - 8th Place
Lance Harris - 8th Place

Mike Holm shoved all in for 469,000 more after Lance Harris bet 72,000 on a {5-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{10-Hearts} flop. Harris called.

Holm: {a-Hearts}{4-Hearts}
Harris: {k-Clubs}{10-Clubs}

Harris was ahead for the moment with tens, but Holm had plenty of equity with the nut flush draw and an overcard. The dealer pulled the {5-Hearts} out on the turn, giving Holm his flush. Harris knuckled the table, and he missed the {j-Clubs} river.

Left with just 30,000, Harris was all in from the big blind a few hands later. The board was {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{k-Clubs} on the turn, and Jonathan Olson check-called 40,000 into a small side pot from Adam Dahlin. Olson check-folded to 50,000 on the {5-Spades} turn. Dahlin turned over {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} for top pair.

Harris peeked down at his first card: {8-Spades}.

"Alright, I have a sweat," he said. "Seven or a nine."

He squeezed out the {2-Spades} though.
