Illingworth Bags Narrow Lead Over Defending Champ Olson

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Joe Illingworth has the overall lead.
Joe Illingworth has the overall lead.

Two former Mid-States Poker Tour champs topped the chip counts at the end of Day 1b of MSPT Meskwaki, leading a field of 50 survivors. Iowa native Joe Illingworth, who won MSPT Ho-Chunk in 2012 for $65,742, finished with the top stack, 269,500. That was enough for a small lead over the defending champion of this event, Jonathan Olson, who banked $95,741 here in July. Olson finished with 262,000.

The field size of 244 for the second starting flight was enough to push the total to 426, smashing the old record (also set by the MSPT in April) of 389 players for a tournament with a buy-in greater than $1,000 in Iowa.

Others who moved on to Sunday's Day 2 included John Kurfman (216,500), Arron Salandro (215,500), Ken Auker (211,500), bracelet winner Nick Jivkov (182,500), Jeremy Dresch (171,500), Nik Stone (105,000), Yossi Azulay (62,000), "Minneapolis" Jim Meehan (61,000), Phil Mader (58,000), and European Poker Tour champion Tim Vance (45,000).

Illingworth was among the leaders just before the last break, and he only added to his stack from there. In one notable pot, he was able to outdraw the {k-Hearts}{k-Spades} of Cash Carpenter with his {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds} all in preflop when two diamonds hit the flop and a third hit on the river.

Olson was unable to get anything going for most of the day after coming up empty-handed on Day 1a, but he began to turn things around by doubling through bracelet winner Will Givens with the {4-Clubs}{4-Spades}, good for a boat on a board of {3-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{3-Spades}{4-Diamonds} against Givens' {a-Clubs}{2-Clubs}. At that point, Olson had 36,500 at Level 10 (500/1,000/100), and he rode the heater from there to a top stack.

Dresch looked poised to bag the chip lead when he had more chips than both leaders ended with, but he bluffed off a large chunk of his stack on one of the last big hands of the night.

Many of the most notable and feared players in the field failed to advance to Day 2, including Blair Hinkle, Brandon Meyers, Lance Harris, Kou Vang, the aforementioned Givens, Allen Kessler, and Matt Kirby. Other eliminations included Mike Mustafa, Jon Hanner, Mike Holm, Judd Greenagel, Jason Seitz, Mario Hudson, Mike Ross, Jason Sell, Aaron Johnson, and Tony Lazar.

Day 2 play will resume at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, so don't miss the final day of this tournament, which will see a six-figure score head to the winner.

Dresch Bluffs Off a Chunk

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Arron Salandro
Arron Salandro

Arron Salandro opened for a raise in middle position, and Jeremy Dresch made it 17,700 to go from the button.

"This is gonna be good," Salandro predicted as he made the call.

The flop came {4-Hearts}{a-Clubs}{q-Clubs}, and Salandro check-called 23,000. Both players checked the {6-Diamonds}, and Salandro checked the {8-Clubs} river. Dresch thought for about a minute before announcing he was all in, and Salandro snap-called.

Dresch tabled an {8-Spades} before sliding his other card to the muck, knowing he was beat, and Salandro showed {10-Clubs}{2-Clubs} for a flush.

Olson Mounting Title Defense

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Jonathan Olson
Jonathan Olson

Jonathan Olson has quickly run up a monster stack after being unable to get much going for the last two days. In one recent pot, he check-called 21,000 on the river against a player on the button with a board of {7-Spades}{a-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{4-Spades}{5-Diamonds} between them.

"You got it," the player said with a shake of his head, turning over {10-}{9-} for a missed straight draw.

Olson showed {a-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} for top pair.

Jeremy Dresch got it all in on the turn with {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}, a dream spot on the {5-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{j-Clubs} board. His opponent in the small blind had been in command on the flop with {q-Spades}{q-Clubs}, but Dresch binked the two outer on the turn and got it in, holding when the {10-Diamonds} fell on the river.

Mader Makes the Crying Call

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Will Stone
Will Stone

On a monotone flop of {4-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}, Phil Mader checked from middle position and saw cutoff Will Stone bet 3,600. Mader raised to 9,000, and the Stone called, seeing a {2-Clubs} turn. Mader switched it up with a tiny bet of 5,000, and Stone again called. A {4-Clubs} fell on the river, and Mader bet 10,000. His opponent shoved, causing Mader to sigh.

"How much do you have, only about 10 more?" Mader asked. It was 12,300 more. "You got kings huh?"

He sighed and tossed in a call, and was shown {k-Clubs}{k-Spades} as he feared. Mader tossed in {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}, showing he'd flopped the nuts.

Meyers Doubles Through Reichard

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
Brandon Meyers
Brandon Meyers

Three players saw a flop of {5-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} and action checked to the cutoff, who bet 2,200. Josh Reichard called out of the big blind, and Brandon Meyers slid his whole stack of just over 20,000 forward. The cutoff folded, and Reichard made the call without much delay.

Reichard: {9-Hearts}{9-Spades}
Meyers: {q-Clubs}{q-Spades}

The {2-Hearts} and {10-Hearts} were bricks, and Reichard was left telling Meyers "nice hand" and shipping him the double.

Mader Springs the Trap

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Phil Mader
Phil Mader

A player opened for 2,100 in middle position, and Phil Mader made it 5,000 to go on his immediate left. Everyone else folded, and the two took in a {5-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds}{2-Spades} flop heads up. Both checked, and an {8-Spades} fell, prompting the opener to shove for about 7,000. Mader immediately called, tabling {a-Clubs}{a-Spades} for top set. His opponent showed the bad luck: {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} for a turned set. He missed the one-outer on the {10-Hearts} river.

Blair Hinkle
Blair Hinkle

Blair Hinkle bet 1,000 on a {9-Spades}{10-Clubs}{8-Hearts} flop from early position and was called by the small blind. In the big blind, Scott Moses put in a raise, and Hinkle got it all in with him, forcing out the small blind.

Hinkle: {10-Hearts}{9-Hearts}
Moses: {7-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}

"Don't do it to me, dealer," Moses prayed.

The dealer obliged, delivering a {6-Spades} and {a-Clubs}, eliciting a big sigh of relief from Moses.

Hinkle was left with about 700 and busted shortly after.

Ross' Beat Sends Reichard Out

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante
Mike Ross got very lucky.
Mike Ross got very lucky.

The board was {j-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} on the turn when two players were all in with another player thinking. Mike Ross was under the gun with his stack in the middle, and Josh Reichard on the button had called off. Apparently, the action had started with a bet from the big blind, a call from Ross, and a raise from Reichard. The big blind called, and Ross shipped it. After the big blind finally folded, Ross revealed he had been caught.

"I thought 1,000 percent you had no hand," he said with a laugh, turning {a-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} for the nut flush draw and a gutshot.

Reichard had the goods with {8-}{7-} for the nut straight. The big blind said he folded a weak straight. The dealer burned and turned the {3-Diamonds} though, giving Ross his flush and putting a painful beat on the Wisconsin native. He took it in stride and headed for the reentry desk.
