Narrow Lead for Tucker on Day 1b

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Issac "Rungood" Tucker
Issac "Rungood" Tucker

Local player Issac "Rungood" Tucker bagged 222,500 to narrowly edge out Kenneth Johnson (213,000) and Blake Warner (210,500) and top the Day 1b chip counts at Mid-States Poker Tour Running Aces Harness Park. The St. Paul native shot up the chip counts late to grab the lead during Level 13 and hang on.

A nice result on the final hand of the night boosted Johnson to the top tier of the counts. Three players saw fifth street, which made the board {2-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{4-Spades}. There was already about 115,000 in the bloated pot, and a player shoved all in for 38,200. William Vincent folded after some thought, and Johnson cut out enough to call, seeming unsure of what to do. After about 30 seconds, he shoved the stack in.

"Two pair," the all-in player said.

Johnson waited for him to reveal, and the player put {4-Clubs}{2-Spades} down. Johnson tossed down {k-Spades}{4-Diamonds} for a better two pair with a loud clap, ending his night with a bang.

Vincent (169,500), Ben Marsh (162,500), Jim Lawrence (127,000), Tony Hartmann (123,500), Mike Wilmes (119,000), Adam Dahlin (97,500), Jeremy Dresch (85,500), John Morgan (76,500), Marc "Poker Joker" Powers (68,500), Matt Kirby (56,500), Jonathan Olson (49,000), and short stack Larry Ormson (24,500) were also among the 37 players punching tickets to Sunday's Day 2. A total of 182 entrants bought in on Day 1b, making a total field of 338.

Morgan, a famed Minnesota business magnate known for participating in some of the highest stakes tournaments on the planet, dragged an exciting late pot to secure his Day 2 berth. One player had moved all in for more than 40,000 on the {j-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} flop, and Morgan called off for about 25,000. A third player folded.

Morgan: {k-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}
Opponent: {k-}{10-}

"Same hand, except I've got this," Morgan said, pointing at his diamond.

An {a-Diamonds} gave him the freeroll win on the turn, and someone called for the straight flush.

The dealer burned and turned the {k-Diamonds}, giving Morgan a royal flush.

"Just like playing the Russian," someone said, referencing the famous hand from the first One Drop in which Morgan got an opponent to fold quads on a board where a straight flush was possible.

"Oh, the Russian didn't know s***," Morgan said as he stacked his chips. "All he had was quad eights."

Many didn't share the good fortune of Morgan, however. Lance Harris, Matt Alexander, Tyler Caspers, Nick Pupillo, Jason Sell, Allen "Chainsaw" Kessler, Jason Zarlenga, Molly Mossey, David Gonia, Brett Kuznia, Brandon Meyers, Aaron Johnson, and Ryan Hartmann all fell short of the finish line.

In Hartmann's case, a successful trap with aces turned against him when he flatted a late-position open and then saw former MSPT champion Mike Wilmes three-bet in the big blind. When the opener mucked, Hartmann shoved his stack in, only to have Wilmes flop a set with {j-}{j-}.

More beats will surely crop up during the course of Day 2 play on Sunday, and cards will be in the air at 10:30 a.m. local time here in Minnesota. Be sure to come back then for more coverage here on PokerNews as a winner is determined.

John Morgan hit a royal flush.

"It's the train wreck we've been waiting for!" John Morgan yelled excitedly as he called off his stack at Table 32.

One player had moved all in for more than 40,000 on the {j-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} flop, and Morgan called off for about 25,000. A third player folded.

Hartmann's Urging Fails

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Ryan Hartmann
Ryan Hartmann

Mike Lang opened for a raise in the hijack and was called by Ryan Hartmann in the cutoff. From the big blind, Mike Wilmes put in a raise, folding out Lang. Hartmann and Wilmes got it all in, though.

"Come on, hold up, baby," Hartmann said, standing over his {a-}{a-}.

Wilmes had {j-}{j-}, and Hartmann's lead was short-lived as a jack appeared on the flop. Hartmann cursed a few times in disgust as the last two streets missed him.

Allen Kessler busted shortly after registration ended.
Allen Kessler busted shortly after registration ended.

Allen "Chainsaw" Kessler opened for a raise on the button and then saw Jason Zarlenga and Ben Marsh shove all in from the blinds. Kessler seemed perturbed by the turn of events and decided to fold {8-}{8-} face up, only to see both players show {a-}{q-}.

The next hand, Kessler got it all in preflop with {10-}{10-} against the {a-Spades}{k-Spades} of Adam Dahlin. The Minnesotan hit a king, leaving Chainsaw busto.

Matt Alexander is busto.
Matt Alexander is busto.

We found Matt Alexander all in for his last 5,675 in late position, and Paul Cross called from the button.

Alexander: {a-Clubs}{8-Spades}
Cross: {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}

Alexander was nearly dead, but he did get some help on the {8-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{10-Hearts} flop with a pair. A {q-Diamonds} turn meant a jack would chop it, but the river was a {q-Clubs}.

Harris Hits the Road

Lance Harris is done early at MSPT Running Aces.
Lance Harris is done early at MSPT Running Aces.

According to Lance Harris, he opened for a raise with {7-Hearts}{6-Hearts} in the first hand he played at his new table with, and a {7-}{6-}{4-} flop gave him top two pair. A player bet out from the blinds, and Harris raised, only to see Sam De Silva reraise out of the small blind. The big blind folded, and Harris got it in against De Silva's {8-}{5-} for the nut straight, and he failed to improve.

Judd Greenagel was the victim of a beat.

Judd Greenagel bet 3,500 on a board of {5-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} on fourth street out of the big blind, and Rob Wazwaz put his whole stack of about 10,300 in. Greenagel called.

Greenagel: {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs}
Wazwaz: {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds}

Wazwaz had two outs, but one of them was the {10-Clubs}, which he binked on the river, causing him to lower his glasses and look at the dealer in amazement.

Three players saw a {6-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{3-Hearts} flop for 1,500 apiece, and action checked to the hijack, who bet 2,800. Ben Marsh called in the small blind, and Sam De Silva jammed for just 5,275 in the big blind. The hijack shoved, and Marsh quickly did so as well.

Marsh: {6-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}
De Silva: {j-Spades}{9-Spades}
Hijack: {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}

The set held up as the turn brought a {7-Spades} and the river a {5-Hearts}.

River Washes Away Most of Zarlenga's Stack

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante
Jason Zarlenga had bad luck early.
Jason Zarlenga had bad luck early.

Jason Zarlenga checked from under the gun and saw his lone opponent, Tom Walberer, bet 700 in what appeared to be a three-bet pot with a flop of {j-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{k-Spades}. Zarlenga made it 2,200 to go, and Walberer immediately reraised to 6,700. The two-time Mid-States Poker Tour champ quickly stacked all of his chips and slid them forward and was called.

Zarlenga: {q-Spades}{10-Hearts}
Walberer: {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts}

Both had flopped monsters, but Walberer needed the board to pair, which it did with the {k-Clubs} river after a {4-Spades} turn. More than likely, Zarlenga will have to make his final bullet count as he's down to under 2,000.
