Welcome to Day 1a of 2014 Mid-States Poker Tour Tropicana Evansville

Will Kou Vang make a splash in his first appearance as a tour pro?
Will Kou Vang make a splash in his first appearance as a tour pro?

Another Mid-States Poker Tour Event is set to kickoff, and this time it's being held in a brand new venue for the tour: Tropicana Evansville, a large property boasting a riverboat casino and two hotels with about 350 rooms just off of the Ohio River. Cards are scheduled to be in the air at 4 p.m. local time here in Evansville, Ind.

One confirmed participant today will be Kou Vang, the Minnesota pro who currently leads the MSPT Player of the Year standings. Vang has scored a few final tables on this year's tour but is still looking for a victory. However, one thing will be different about Vang's participation this weekend: he'll be playing his first tournament as a sponsored pro by the MSPT, adding to a stable that already included Matt Kirby, Matt Alexander, and Blake Bohn.

The plan for today is to play 14 levels, with each lasting 40 minutes. Players are allowed to reenter once should they go bust, and each player will begin with 20,000 chips, with blinds beginning at 50/100 under the Allen Kessler-approved structure.

A tad less than 100 players already populate the event room here at the Tropicana Evansville, where the tournament is being held. The most recognizable among them is Adam Friedman, an Ohio native who made the short trek to Southern Indiana. Friedman has claimed more than $1.6 million in tournament winnings while collecting a World Series of Poker bracelet on his poker journey. Friedman has also won numerous smaller tournaments in the area, and he's looking to add another to his resume by notching his first Mid-States Poker Tour cash.

Chambers Raises the River

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante
Dan Chambers
Dan Chambers

Dan Chambers bet 450 from middle position after a lone opponent checked to him from under the gun on a flop of {5-Spades}{10-Spades}{4-Clubs}. The under-the-gun player raised to 1,125, and Chambers made the call. Chambers called another 3,000 on the {10-Hearts} turn, and a {k-Clubs} finished out the community cards. The first player bet 4,500, and Chambers flicked out 10,000.

"King-ten?" the first player asked with a smile. He thought it over for a couple of minutes before mucking his holding.

Gallagher Calls Down

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

We found Sheila Gallagher calling bets of 2,000 on the turn and 3,500 on the river on a board of {a-Spades}{2-Spades}{7-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{10-Spades} against a big blind opponent. The big blind showed {10-Hearts}{7-Clubs} for tens and sevens, but Gallagher had {a-Hearts}{7-Spades} for aces up.

Cates Gets a Knockout

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

We found a player all in for 1,525 in the big blind, having been called by John Cates in middle position. The player in the cutoff wanted to play for more, though, and he made it 4,000 to go. Cates called, and the two players began a side pot as a monotone {9-Spades}{2-Spades}{3-Spades} flop hit the board. Cates led out for 8,000, and the cutoff mucked.

Cates: {k-Spades}{10-Clubs}
Big blind: {j-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}

The big blind needed to fade Cates pairing or spiking a spade, and he did so on the {2-Hearts} turn. The {k-Diamonds} river gave Cates top pair though, and the big blind cursed as he got up to leave.

Friedman Doubles

Adam Friedman

We found Adam Friedman all in on a flop of {q-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{10-Hearts} with {a-Clubs}{7-Clubs} against an opponent who had top pair with {k-Spades}{q-Spades}. Friedman turned an {a-Spades}, giving him the lead with aces, and the {2-Diamonds} river was a blank.

Also, Kou Vang just took a seat at Table 2.

Galey Defending Home Turf With Bullets

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

One player was already all in as the river card made the board {2-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{6-Clubs}{10-Clubs}, and the big blind bet 1,200 into a small side pot against Steve Galey. Indiana native Galey made the call, and he was shown {q-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} for queens up. Galey had it beat with {a-Clubs}{a-Spades} though, and he took the whole pot when the all-in player failed to show a better hand.
