Who Can Stop Bruce Russell?

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Bruce Russell
Bruce Russell

With roughly 5,000 in the pot and a flop of {2-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{6-Hearts}, MSPT Team Pro Nick Pupillo checked from the cutoff and then called when chip leader Bruce Russell bet 5,500 from the button.

After the dealer burned and turned the {7-Clubs}, Pupillo seized the initiative and led out for a hefty 19,400. Russell gave it some thought, and then tossed in a call to see the {Q-Spades} river.

Pupillo checked, and Russell did the same before showing the {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts}. It was good as Pupillo simply sent his cards to the muck unseen.

Pupillo Shoves on Lowery; Mader Enters the Mix

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante

On a {4-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{2-Spades} flop, Nick Pupillo bet 5,200 from the big blind and Duma Lowery raised to 17,000 from the button. Pupillo made the call and then led out for 18,000 on the {8-Hearts} turn. Lowery called and watched Pupillo shove all in for his last 10,000.

"I Fold," Lowery said. "We should have just gotten it in on the flop.

Meanwhile, Nebraska farmer and poker aficionado Phil Mader has entered the tournament.

"Didn't plan on playing tonight, but with 30k starting stack I have 50 big blinds," said Mader. "Couldn't help myself."

Mistake Likely Costs Northrope the Pot

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante

An interesting hand just went down that was demonstrative of the dealer not always being right.

It began when Travis Northrope opened for 2,125 and Lou Mortellarr called from middle position. A short-stacked David McLaughlin then moved all in for 3,850 from the cutoff, and action folded back to Northrope.

"Can I raise?" he asked the dealer, who indicated that he could not. Northrope made a comment that he didn't think that was correct, but nonetheless made the call, as did Mortellarr.

Both players then proceeded to check it down as the board ran out {j-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds}{10-Spades}. McLaughlin showed the {j-Clubs}{3-Clubs} for a flopped two pair he seemed to know had been counterfeited. Sure enough, Mortellarr rolled over the {a-Spades}{4-Spades} for aces and tens. Northrope then showed the {q-Spades}{q-Hearts} and wondered again whether or not he should have been able to raise.

As it was, his raise was 1,525 over the initial 600 blind, meaning if McLaughlin raise was equal or more than that, he should have been able to raise. Indeed, McLaughlin's all-in raise was for 1,725 more, meaning Northrope should have been able to raise.

Unfortunately for him, it was too late and the dealer error stood.

"I'm not mad, I just know I could have raised," Northrope said with a hint of regret.

"1sickdisease" Flushed By Pupillo

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Kevin Eyster
Kevin Eyster

We missed the preflop action, but we do know Kevin "1sickdisease" Eyster got his stack of roughly 20,000 all in against MSPT Team Pro Nick Pupillo.

Pupillo: {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}
Eyster: {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}

It was a flip, and while Eyster survived the {5-Spades}{7-Hearts}{3-Hearts} flop, Pupillo picked up a flush draw to go with his overs. He hit it too as the {4-Hearts} peeled off on the river to leave Eyster drawing dead. The meaningless {K-Spades} was put out on the river for good measure, and then Eyster headed for the exit.

Level: 9

Blinds: 400/800

Ante: 100

Currently Up to 117

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante

The clock say that 117 entrants have taken part on Day 1a thus far, which is already better than the Day 1a flight from back in March when 94 entrants took to the felt. With late registration and reentries open through the end of the night, we expect that number to keep growing.

"I'm On Tilt"

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante

With 6,000 in the pot and a flop of {9-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{j-Clubs}, Chris Maxwell checked from the small blind and a player in early position bet 1,800. Matt Voorhees folded from the cutoff, and action was back on Maxwell.

"I'm on tilt," he said before check-raising to 6,000.

His opponent wanted none of it and released his hand, which inspired some at the table to joke it was a nice speech. Maxwell then showed the nonbelievers the {5-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} for absolute air.

Keeline Fires Again

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante

We noticed Ben Keeline was no longer seated at Table 13, and a quick check with MSPT Team Pro Matt Alexander confirmed that Keeline had been eliminated.

However, as he was confirming the elimination, Alexander spotted Keeline a table over, having already reentered and doubled up. Clearly the second bullet is going better for Keeline than the first.

Pupillo Continues to Build with Double Knockout

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Nick Pupillo
Nick Pupillo

Action folded to Duma Lowery on the button and he raised to 2,000, which Mike Hassab called from the small blind. MSPT Team Pro Nick Pupillo came along from the big blind, and the flop came down {k-Spades}{10-Spades}{8-Diamonds}.

Hassab checked, Pupillo tossed in two red T5,000 chips for a bet of 10,000, and Lowery called off his last 7,500. Hassab then check-raised all in for 22,000, and Pupillo called the additional 12,000.

Lowery: {j-Clubs}{9-Spades}
Pupillo: {j-Diamonds}{q-}
Hassab: {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}

Hassab got it in good with top pair, but both Lowery and Pupillo were drawing to two different straight. The {A-Clubs} turn gave Pupillo his, and that left Lowery drawing dead. Meanwhile, Hassab could still win with either an ace or kings on the flop, but it was not meant to be as the {8-Clubs} blanked on the river.
