Derek McMaster Leads Advancing 27 Players from Day 1b Field

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Derek McMaster

Season 6 of Mid-States Poker Tour continued on Friday with Day 1b action from the MSPT Golden Gates Casino in Black Hawk, Colorado. The second of three starting flights attracted 161 entrants, which along with Day 1a's 126 brings the current total up 287, which already ensures the $200,000 guarantee is crushed.

The question is, with another starting flight to go, how high will the prize pool climb?

One man who'll be competing for a chunk of it is Derek McMaster, who finished atop the Day 1b counts with a stack of 450,000, which is well ahead of Day 1a chip leader Ross Reichert, who bagged 357,500. Others who bagged after 16 levels of play on Day 1b were Ben Keeline (375,000), William Givens (374,500), and Kyle Wagner (315,500). All told, just 27 players survived the night, meaning with the 20 Day 1a survivors, 47 players have punched their ticket to Sunday's Day 2.

Unfortunately not everyone was so lucky. Kevin "Phwap" Boudreau, who finished fourth in the same tournament a year ago, returned to Golden Gates Casino, but didn't find much luck. He busted early, reentered, and then busted again when he got his stack all in preflop holding pocket aces against pocket kings. A king on the flop put a quick end to Boudreau's day.

Others who fell on Day 1b were former MSPT Golden Gates champ Reza Yazdi, Allen Kessler, Jeff Fielder, Sean Munjal, Mike Harris, Mark Hodge, Matt Kirby, and Aaron Massey.

Massey fell in Level 14 (1,200/2,400/400) when John Vitt opened for 6,500 from the hijack and Tom Heine three-bet to 16,000 from the cutoff. Massey then four-bet jammed for 29,300 from the big blind, Vitt five-bet all in over the top for 86,100, and Heine hit the tank before spiking in a call.

Vitt: {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}
Heine: {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}
Massey: {q-Clubs}{q-Spades}

"That's a problem," Heine said upon seeing he and Massey shared the same hand. Indeed it was, and neither player got lucky as the board ran out {j-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{6-Spades}{j-Spades}{7-Clubs} to give Vitt a full house.

While dozens fell, a select few advances to Day 2 including Rich Dixon (296,500), Bryan Devonshire (178,000), Sylvain Cote (159,000), Danny Gonzalez (108,000), and Kevin Eyster (56,000).

Day 1c will kick off at 12:00 p.m. local time on Saturday with the plan of playing 16 levels. Late registration and reentries are open all day long, and of course the PokerNews Live Reporting Team will there every step of the way.

No Day 2 for Hodge... At Least Not Yet

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Mark Hodge
Mark Hodge

"Well, I get to play again tomorrow," Mark Hodge said as he stopped by our desk before departing Golden Gates Casino for the night.

Hodge explained that Ben Keeline opened for 9,000 from the cutoff and he decided to three-bet shove for 43,000 from the small blind.

Keeline: {a-}{j-}
Hodge: {k-}{q-}

Hodge was drawing to live cards, but as he put it, "the board ran out dry."

Hodge, who currently sits atop the MSPT Season 6 Player of the Year Leaderboard, will return tomorrow to give it another go.

Kessler: "I'm Afraid to Turn My Hand Over"

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Allen Kessler
Allen Kessler

A short-stacked Allen Kessler open-shoved his last 10,000 from middle position and Bruce Carter called from the button. The blinds both folded and Carter tabled the {a-Spades}{9-Hearts}.

"I'm afraid to turn my hand over," Kessler said before revealing the {q-Spades}{9-Diamonds}.

The {3-Spades}{4-Hearts}{a-Hearts} flop was bad news for Kessler.

"Drawing dead on the flop," he muttered. Not quite true as he could catch running queens, but that didn't happen as the {K-Hearts} blanked on the turn followed by the {10-Spades} on the river.

Fade Into Black

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
William Black
William Black

William Black was on one heck of a heater earlier in the day, but his active and aggressive style caught up to him.

We missed Black's bustout hand, but Tyler Corbett, who had tangled with Black on numerous occasions, informed us of his demise. According to him, Black limped and Alan Curl raised to 3,000. Two players called, and when action was back on Black he shipped for 24,000. Curl called and the other two players got out of the way.

Curl: {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}
Black: {q-}{j-}

Black was looking for some help, but the board ran out a lowly {9-}{4-}{3-}{2-}{5-} to improve Curl to a wheel.

"Wow, I Got Off Cheap"

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Mike Hassab
Mike Hassab

With roughly 10,000 in the pot and a board reading {k-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{7-Spades}{k-Spades}{4-Clubs}, current MSPT POY leader Mark Hodge bet 3,800 only to have Mike Hassab raise to 8,000. Hodge took his time before coming out with a three-bet to 18,800, and Hassab thought for a bit before just calling.

"I have a boat," Hassab said and tabled the {7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}.

"Quads," Hodge said and tabled the {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}. The entire table, including Hodge, seemed impressed that Hassab just called.

"I almost shipped it right there," Hassab admitted. "Wow, I got off cheap."

Going the Speed Limit Doesn't Work Out for Sharp

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Thomas Sharp
Thomas Sharp

Just before the level went up, Nathan Finger raised to 1,500 from middle position and received a call from the player in the cutoff. Thomas Sharp then three-bet jammed for 5,850 total from the button, both blinds folded, and the other two players called before checking it down as the board ran out {a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{k-Hearts}{3-Hearts}.

Sharp: {5-Hearts}{5-Spades}
Cutoff: {8-}{8-}
Finger: {a-Hearts}{q-Spades}

Finger had the worst hand preflop, but the ace on the flop gave him the win to send Sharp to the rail.

Big Pot for Former Golden Gates Champ

Level 4 : 100/200, 25 ante
Reza Yazdi
Reza Yazdi

Reza Yazdi, who won this very event one year ago, opened for 800 from middle position and Chuck Tipton three-bet to 2,000 from the hijack. Action folded back to Yazdi, who called to see a {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} flop. Yazdi proceeded to check-call a bet of 4,000, and then checked the {7-Clubs} turn. Tipton bet 8,000, Yazdi moved all in, and Tipton called off for just a bit less.

Tipton: {q-Hearts}{q-}
Yazdi: {k-Clubs}{9-Clubs}

Yazdi flopped trip nines to pull ahead of Tipton's queens, and he held when the {J-Hearts} blanked on the river. Tipton immediately made his way to the registration desk to reenter.

Colorado Poker Champion Primed for More Golden Gates Success

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante
Tyler Corbett
Tyler Corbett

Tyler Corbett always seems to do well here at Golden Gates Casino. Back in August, he topped a field of 281 to take down the Colorado Poker Championships $1,100 Main Event for $52,320, and the last time the MSPT visited the property, he finished runner-up to Kane Lai (who finished third in chips on Day 1a this year) for $58,518.

Corbett is in action today and looking to finish one spot better than he did the last time around, and he's certainly off to a good start.

We missed the action in a recent hand, but we do know there was around 15,000 in the pot and a board reading {a-Hearts}{2-Spades}{q-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{a-Clubs}. Corbett managed to get his stack of approximately 36,000 in, and his opponent, who had just a bit less than that, called off.

Corbett tabled the {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds} for aces full of queens, which best his opponent's {a-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} aces full of deuces.

Corbett is certainly a force to be reckoned with.

Boudreau Off to a Good Start

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante
Kevin Boudreau
Kevin Boudreau

In the middle of the 2013 World Series of Poker, Kevin "Phwap" Boudreau collapsed in the parking lot of a nearby Subway restaurant during the dinner break of an event. The young poker pro was rushed to the hospital and the community was shocked to learn that he had suffered a traumatic brain injury, one that came with a grim prognosis.

Boudreau, who was part of the famed Ship It Holla Ballas crew, had sudden bleeding in his brain and was placed in an induced coma. As his family rushed from Colorado to be by his side, many of his close friends in Vegas did what they could. The outlook was grim.

Fast forward two years. Boudreau, who is still on a long road to recovery, is back playing the game he loves. A miracle in and of itself. At this time last year, Boudreau set the poker world ablaze when he final tabled this very event, ultimately finishing in fourth place for $34,678 after suffering a brutal bad beat to eventual champ Reza Yazdi.

Boudreau has returned to Golden Gates Casino and is looking for a bit of redemption, and he immediately got back to his winning way.

In a recent hand, Boudreau opened for 300 from the cutoff and received calls from the player on the button and MSPT Team Pro Matt Kirby in the big blind. The {j-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs} flop saw Kirby check, Boudreau bet 700, and only the button call to see the {10-Clubs} turn, which both players checked.

When the {3-Clubs} completed the board on the river, Boudreau bet 1,050 and his opponent paid him off. Boudreau tabled the {a-Spades}{j-Clubs} for a flopped two pair, and it was good as his opponent simply mucked.
