"Better to Be Lucky Than Good" for Lang

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante

After an early limp, Mike Lang made it 1,200 to go and got two callers, the small blind and the limper. The {8-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{9-Spades} flop prompted a couple of checks, and Lang bet 3,000. The small blind called, and the limper jammed for 9,850. Lang thought a bit and reshipped. The small blind got a count but folded.

Lang: {a-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}
Small blind: {9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}

Lang needed help against the two pair, and running {10-Hearts}{10-Spades} gave it to him for jacks up.

"Better to be lucky than good," he said.

Lang booked a pair of runner-up finishes in 2014 on the Mid-States Poker Tour, each worth north of $60,000.

Ross Survives

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante

"East Coast" Mike Ross put in his last 5,100 on a board of {6-Spades}{8-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}, and an opponent who had checked from early position made what was clearly a crying call after about a minute. Ross turned over {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds} and had the player with {9-}{9-} crushed. The river was the {7-Diamonds}, and Ross doubled up.

Skalsky's Boat is Bigger

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante

In an already bloated pot, Ryan Skalsky moved all in for 8,700 from the small blind, and his opponent in the big blind called on the {q-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{5-Spades}{8-Hearts}{7-Clubs} board. Skalsky held {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades} for queens full, and his opponent showed the bad luck: {7-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} for an underfull.

Tollefson Sees Perfect Turn

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante

Taylor Tollefson raised to 5,600 after an opponent in the small blind continuation-bet 2,600 on a {5-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{3-Spades} flop. Tollefson's opponent called, and they got the rest in on the {a-Diamonds} turn with Tollefson having turned a flush with {7-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} and his opponent top set with {a-Clubs}{a-Spades}. A brick fell on the river, and the small blind shipped her stack of about 6,000 to Tollefson.

Thompson Pays Off Harris

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante

"Red Bull" Robbie Thompson of World Series of Poker announcing fame is in the field, though he just took a bit of a hit on a board of {k-Hearts}{5-Spades}{6-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{10-Spades}. He had bet 3,100 on the turn from the small blind and got a call from Michael Harris. On the river, Thompson checked and saw Harris bet 4,600.

"I can only beat king-jack now," Thompson said with a sigh.

He called anyway, and Harris showed {8-Spades}{7-Clubs} for the straight on the turn.
