Stone Leads Advancing 33 Players on Day 1a of Wisconsin State Poker Championship

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Will Stone
Will Stone

A day of furious action at Mid-States Poker Tour Wisconsin State Poker Championship at Ho-Chunk Gaming Wisconsin Dells ended with 33 players out of 197 surviving the 14 40-minute levels. Will Stone bagged the heftiest stack with 292,500, but the native Wisconsinite is closely trailed by Mandy Caffee (276,000) and Brian Rudolph (252,500), with Jeff Petronack (228,000) and Zach Shelton (213,000) also finishing north of 200K.

Stone began the day with a big double through Rob Wazwaz during Level 3 (100/200). He five-bet shoved for about 18,000 after a raising war on a {5-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{4-Clubs} flop with {4-Diamonds}{4-Spades}. The bottom set had Wazwaz's {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades} crushed, and Stone's double was secured after a king failed to come to Wazwaz's rescue.

Later, a dream scenario unfolded for Stone during Level 12 (800/1,600/200). He found himself in a three-way all in with {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds} against opponents holding {k-}{k-} and {a-}{k-}. A {j-}{10-}{4-} flop gave Stone a sweat as the player with ace-king had picked up a gutshot, but two harmless bricks fell on the last two streets to ship him the monster pot.

Other players punching tickets to Sunday's Day 2 included Mike Mustafa (137,500), Mike Holm (136,500), tour pro Matt Alexander (133,000), Joe Ford (104,500), Kou Vang (93,500), Chad Holloway (93,000), and Ernest Garrett (84,500).

Plenty of big names dusted off a bullet or two during the course of play and will have to run it back on Saturday's Day 1b for a shot at what looks to be a big prize pool (the 197-player field is more than halfway to a venue record for the tour). Former MSPT champs Nick Jivkov, Ervin Bjerga, Blake Bohn, Matt Kirby, and Terry Ring failed to advance, as did John Hayes, Lance Harris, Nick Pupillo, Mark Kroon, Nik Stone, and Mark Hodge.

Day 1b kicks off at 4 p.m. local time on Saturday, so come back to PokerNews to see what develops.

Holloway, Caffee Drag Huge Pots to End Night

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Mandy Caffee
Mandy Caffee

Four players saw {q-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} for the price of 5,500 preflop, and action checked to Mike Holm in the cutoff. He put in 10,000, and Kou Vang called from the button. In the big blind, Chad Holloway announced he was all in for roughly 58,000. The fourth player folded, as did Holm and Vang.

"I wouldn't normally show," Holloway said before flashing {5-}{5-} for a set.

At another table, Mandy Caffee scored a monster double just before the night's end when a player check-shoved all in on an {8-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{7-Spades} flop with {7-}{5-} only to be drawing nearly dead after Caffee snapped it off with {10-}{10-} for top set.

Players are bagging for the night.

Holm Doubles

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Mike Holm
Mike Holm

Mike Holm opened for a raise in middle position and saw the big blind three-bet to 17,000. Holm jammed for 80,700, and the big blind called with {a-Spades}{q-Spades}. Holm had him dominated with {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}, and a run out of {4-Clubs}{a-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{6-Clubs} meant Holm doubled up.

Dream Spot for Stone

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Will Stone
Will Stone

Will Stone just picked up {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds} in a three-way all in, and it turned out to be one of the most dream scenarios possible. One of his opponents held {k-}{k-}, while the other had {a-}{k-}. A {j-}{10-}{4-} flop made things a bit hairy, but no further danger emerged from the deck and Stone took out two players.

Pupillo Triples Up

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Nick Pupillo
Nick Pupillo

Nick Pupillo was the chip leader early on then said he was busted down to a few thousand before running it up to more than 50,000. Back down to his last 9,800, he shoved over a 9,500 jam from the player under the gun, and Joe Ford put both at risk from the big blind.

Ford: {a-Spades}{q-Hearts}
Under the gun: {a-Clubs}{j-Clubs}
Pupillo: {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}

Pupillo had found a great spot, but both opponents picked up equity as {3-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} flopped, giving Ford a pair of queens and the other player a flush draw. Two bricks Pupillo needed, and two bricks he got as {9-Diamonds} and {7-Spades} emerged from the deck.

Holloway Doubles With Rags

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Chad Holloway
Chad Holloway

Jeff Petronack opened to 2,000 in early position, and Chad Holloway jammed 15,925 from the button. The small blind called, and Petronack folded.

Small blind: {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}
Holloway: {7-Spades}{4-Spades}

Holloway had been caught shipping light, and he stood up when he saw how crushed he was. A {q-Hearts} door card was followed by {4-Hearts}{4-Clubs} though, just the ticket for Holloway. The {9-Clubs} turn and {j-Diamonds} river danced around the small blind.

Players are on break for 10 minutes.

Bohn Doubles Up

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
Blake Bohn
Blake Bohn

Blake Bohn got his last 13,525 in preflop with {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds} against {q-Spades}{q-Clubs}. Kings have been a cursed hand lately according to Bohn's twitter feed, as he's repeatedly dropped monster pots in various tournaments, and things looked no different this time as {q-Hearts}{7-Spades}{5-Hearts} flopped. The {3-Hearts} turn helped Bohn with a four-flush, and the {k-Clubs} river was one of the cards he needed to take the pot.

"That would have been 1-for-11," Bohn said of his recent skid with cowboys.

Alexander Shows a Big Bluff

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
Matt Alexander
Matt Alexander

In a raised pot, Matt Alexander bet 1,700 from late position and saw Ernest Garrett check-raise to 4,000 on a {7-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{6-Spades} flop. Alexander responded by putting Garrett, who made the final table of Mid-States Poker Tour Running Aces a couple of weeks ago, all in for about 16,000 total. Garrett hemmed and hawed, putting his face in his hands.

"You got kings?" he asked. "You just have an overpair or do you have that seven?"

He mucked what he claimed was aces, and Alexander quickly flipped {q-Clubs}{9-Hearts} for an airball before dragging the pot.

"Great bet, dude," Garrett said.

Holloway Doubles Up

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante
Chad Holloway
Chad Holloway

Chad Holloway check-called 2,500 from the small blind on a board of {4-Spades}{8-Hearts}{6-Spades}{6-Diamonds} against a cutoff opponent. On the {4-Clubs} river, Holloway gather all of his chips in a stack and slid them forward, 4,975. His opponent thought things over for a few minutes, saying he had blockers to the straight. Ultimately, he decided to call. Holloway flipped {5-Hearts}{4-Hearts} for the underfull, and he took the pot down to get back above the starting stack.

Quadding Early

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

Two players have made quads early on to take down big pots.

Blake Bohn said he made quad fives with one five in his hand, getting paid off on a big overbet on the river when he put 14,000 into an 8,000 pot.

At another table, Greg Wilson made quads to bust Larry Ormson, who looked less than pleased as he got up from the table. Ormson immediately reentered the tournament.
