Welcome to Day 2 of Mid-States Poker Tour Tropicana Evansville (full)

Nick Pupillo
Nick Pupillo

Just under 20 percent of the field remains as 49 players will convene for Day 2 of Mid-States Poker Tour Tropicana Evansville out of a total field of 251. Craig Spalding enters with the most chips at 283,000, but he will have plenty of competition as players vie for the second-ever title here in Southern Indiana.

Day 1b leader Kenny Smith, Neil Patel, two-time MSPT champ Jason Zarlenga, Allen "Chainsaw" Kessler, Alex Yen, Nick Pupillo, Tim Vance, Josh Turner, and Adam Lamphere are some of the names still in the hunt for a first-place prize that has yet to be released. Pupillo and Zarlenga are representing Team MSPT as sponsored pros, with the former looking to repeat a final table appearance from last year and the latter looking to become the first three-time winner.

Blinds will begin at Level 15 (1,500/3,000/500) and progress in increments of 40 minutes as players fall by the wayside until a final table is reached. At that point, there will be a dinner break before things resume until a champion is crowned. Stay tuned to PokerNews to see who that will be.

Schroeder Hits Every Out

Level 15 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Derek Schroeder
Derek Schroeder

The player on the button opened to 8,500. Neil Patel made it 18,000 from the small blind, and after tanking a bit, Derek Schroeder shoved all in. The opener mucked.

"Damn man," Patel said. "Can I get a count?"

The dealer told him it was 75,500, and he called.

Patel: {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}
Schroeder: {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}

The {q-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} flop made Schroeder a set. The {q-Clubs} turn sealed it with quads.

"Oh my God," Patel said. "Nice hand, man."

Josh Turner
Josh Turner

Josh Turner pushed all in from the button for about 55,000, and Nick Pupillo called in the small blind. Turner showed {j-Hearts}{10-Hearts}.

"Wow," he said softly when Pupillo showed {a-}{3-}.

The Mid-States Poker Tour Team Pro flopped an ace and Turner was dead on the turn.

After a few more eliminations, the tournament is now hand-for-hand.

Zarlenga Ousted on Beat

Level 19 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Jason Zarlenga
Jason Zarlenga

Jason Zarlenga bet 22,000 from middle position after Craig Spalding checked out of the big blind on a {j-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{7-Clubs} flop. Spalding called then checked the {3-Diamonds}.

"Big hand, buddy?" Zarlenga asked.

Spalding didn't respond, and the two-time champ shoved for 53,000.

"I'm gonna call," Spalding said, tabling {a-Spades}{j-Clubs}

He trailed Zarlenga's {k-Spades}{q-Spades}, but the {a-Hearts} river dealt Zarlenga a brutal knockout blow.

Will Outflops, Eliminates Hobbs in Massive Pot

Level 20 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
David Hobbs
David Hobbs

In a battle of the blinds, David Hobbs bet 50,000 on a {j-}{10-}{7-} flop, and Jim Will shoved all in after tanking a bit for about 350,000 effective. Hobbs called it off with {k-}{k-}, only to be shown {9-}{8-} for the stone nuts. Hobbs needed massive help, but he could only chop after the {8-} turn. The river was a {q-Diamonds}, and Will collected the pot of the tournament thus far.

David Dang Eliminated in 9th Place ($4,839)

Level 22 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
David Dang - 9th Place
David Dang - 9th Place

Jim Will opened for 45,000 and called the shove of a short-stacked David Dang, who had about 105,000.

Dang: {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}
Will: {a-Spades}{q-Spades}

Dang's advantage was short-lived as the {a-Clubs} door card was followed by {8-Diamonds}{j-Spades}. The {5-Hearts} and {9-Clubs} completed the board and Dang was out.

Monster Pot Pushed to Yen

Level 23 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Alex Yen
Alex Yen

Three players limped, and Alex Yen checked the big blind. Action checked to Jim Will, who bet 60,000 lastto act on the {6-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} flop. Yen made it 150,000, folding out the middle players. A {9-Clubs} hit and Yen bet 225,000. Will thought a bit and shoved all in. Yen called right away.

Yen: {7-Clubs}{5-Hearts}
Will: {9-Hearts}{8-Hearts}

Yen had turned a straight but needed to fade nines and eights on the river.

"Whew," he said when the {7-Hearts} emerged.

Stacks were counted down, and Yen had 860,000.

Jim Will Eliminated in 8th Place ($7,259)

Level 24 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Jim Will - 8th Place
Jim Will - 8th Place

Jim Will shoved for 83,000, and Allen Kessler isolated in the cutoff on his left for 150,000. Everyone else mucked.

Kessler: {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}
Will: {9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}

Kessler claimed Will had a good chance, and the {10-Spades}{j-Hearts}{8-Clubs} gave both players a straight draw on the flop.

"Queen would be alright," Kessler said.

Indeed it was a {q-Spades} on the turn, and the "Chainsaw" scored an elimination.

Craig Spalding Eliminated in 7th Place ($9,679)

Level 24 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Craig Spalding - 7th Place
Craig Spalding - 7th Place

Craig Spalding got his last 300,000 or so in from the small blind with {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds} but he was crushed by Alex Yen's {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}. A {7-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{5-Spades} flop offered little hope for Spalding, but the {6-Diamonds} turn gave him outs with an open-ender. The {j-Diamonds} river missed him, and Yen has about half of the chips in play six-handed.
