Third Day the Charm for Rich Dixon as Field Hits 399

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Rich Dixon
Rich Dixon

Rich Dixon kept building up big stacks in the first two flights of Mid-States Poker Tour Denver Poker Open $1,100 Main Event, but he kept stumbling late. Things got off to a similar start on Day 1c as he lost almost all of his stack in one of the first levels.

However, he turned things right around from there and this time shepherded his big stack to the finish. He bagged 312,000, good for second place, narrowly behind Ryan Remington's 314,000. Ben Greenberg rounded a closely packed top three with 308,000.

Brian Hou, the last MSPT Black Hawk champ, also made an appearance, and he made sure he didn't regret skipping the first couple of flights. Hou made it through with 175,000, aided by the nut flush against a set in a huge pot late. He got the money in on the turn and faded the board pairing to net a full double.

Other latecomers among the 32 to bag included Alex Winter and Adedapo Ajayi, both of whom ran deep in the WSOP Main Event this summer.

The 194 runners on Day 1c pushed the total field to 399, and organizers produced a preliminary, unofficial prize pool that earmarks $85,149 for the winner. A full payout breakdown will be available early on Day 2.

As both of the first two flights reached hard stops, Day 2 will kick off at the earliest stoppage point, 26 minutes remaining at 1,500/3,000/3,000. A total of 55 players come back on Sunday, and all the coverage will be right back here on PokerNews at 11 a.m. local time.

One player bought in at the buzzer, leaving the event stuck on 194 entries for Day 1c. Combined with the 205 in the first two flights, that makes it 399 entries for 2019 Mid-States Poker Tour Denver Poker Open $1,100 Main Event.

Official prize numbers will be posted shortly, but PokerNews has been given unofficial word that the winner will bank $85,149.

Frei Can't Find a Fold

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Aaron Frei
Aaron Frei

Joel Verbeck shoved from an early position for 4,700 and Aaron Frei made it 16,000 in middle position. David Sanchez jammed from the small blind for around 70,000. Frei went deep into the tank and ultimately called for about 36,000.

Verbeck: {5-Spades}{5-Clubs}
Frei: {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}
Sanchez: {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}

Three pocket pairs, but Sanchez's was best. The {6-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{7-Hearts} gave him a chance to close it out on the turn but he only slammed the door on Verbeck when the {10-Clubs} arrived. The river was a {3-Spades}, securing him the double knockout.

Olson Can't Hold

Level 8 : 400/800, 800 ante
Jonathan Olson
Jonathan Olson

On a {2-Clubs}{k-Spades}{j-Spades} flop, Jonathan Olson bet 21,000, which looked to be well over the size of the pot. Ravi Subramanian, on his right, check-raised all in for just over 60,000 and Olson quickly called with {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}.

Subramanian had a draw with {a-Spades}{10-Spades} and bricked the {2-Diamonds} turn. Not the {q-Hearts} river, though, which gave him a winning straight.

Kuznia Unlucky and Busted

Level 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Brett Kuznia
Brett Kuznia

Brett Kuznia opened for 1,600 in middle position and got one caller. Michael Ermie made it 6,600 on the button and Kuznia jammed for 17,700. The caller mucked and Ermie tanked about 30 seconds and splashed in chips.

Ermie: {a-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}
Kuznia: {a-Spades}{k-Spades}

Kuznia was in a dominating spot but it eroded a bit on the {8-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} flop. The {3-Clubs} was a brick but the {j-Hearts} river gave Ermie a straight.

Big River Value for Hou

Level 2 : 100/100, 100 ante
Brian Hou
Brian Hou

Five players saw the turn as {4-Clubs}{5-Spades}{3-Clubs}{4-Spades} hit the felt, and a player bet 2,000 from middle position. Brian Hou called in the hijack, and the two players behind him called as well. The river was a {q-Spades} and action checked to Hou. He bet 8,500. The cutoff folded but the player on the button called.

Hou showed {a-Spades}{8-Spades} for a flush and took the sizable pot.

Welcome to Day 1c of MSPT Denver Poker Open

Golden Gates Casino Black Hawk, Colorado
Golden Gates Casino Black Hawk, Colorado

Two flights are down and one is left, the last chance for players to get in on the growing prize pool in Mid-States Poker Tour Denver Poker Open $1,110 Main Event at Golden Gates Casino in the Rocky Mountains.

A total of 205 entries have been logged thus far, so the $200,000 guarantee is no longer in question. The only questions are how big the field will get, and will anyone be able to catch the 413,000 bagged by Jim Morrison after a torrid finish to Day 1b?

Those who have yet to bag — or wish to surrender their stacks — will have a chance starting at noon local time. Another day full of 40-minute levels is on tap, with players receiving 20,000 in their starting stacks and navigating from 100/100 to 1,500/3,000/3,000.

The latter level is where play will end, with about 26 minutes remaining on the clock, unless another hard stop is reached even earlier at 12% of the field. Those who do go bust can reenter as many times as they wish until the start of Level 13.

To keep tabs on all the happenings on Day 1c, keep an eye here on PokerNews.
