Brian Heeb Leads the Overall Field After Day 1b of the 2020 MSPT Venetian $1,100 Main Event

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Brian Heeb

Another 15 full levels were played to their completion on Saturday night in the 2020 Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) Venetian $1,100 Main Event, a day where the room was full before the tournament began and remained that way until well after registration closed more than seven hours later. In total, 638 entries were logged to bring the two-day total to 1,123 and generate a massive prize pool of $1,089,310.

When play finished for the day, 84 players remained and Brian Heeb found himself as the man on top of the leader board, finishing play with a massive stack of 786,500. Heeb was spotted with over 500,000 shortly after the last break of the evening and continued to climb as the minutes wound down off the clock until he ended the day with a stack that significantly surpassed Alan Findlay's Day 1a chip lead of 612,500.

Other big stacks included Illinois' Stanley Statkiewicz (411,000), Scott Mobark (376,500), Zachary Reinbold (373,500), and Brandon Lombardo (303,000). Plenty more familiar names to the MSPT and the overall poker world also advanced, including the likes of Blake Whittington (271,000), Ricardo Eyzaguirre (251,500), John Sun (158,500), Nick Pupillo (108,000), and Todd Sladek (102,000).

Many others were less fortunate: Faraz Jaka, Ben Keeline, Rob Wazwaz, Dapo Ajayi, and DJ Buckley were some of those who found the rail prior to the night's completion.

In total, 148 are set to advance to Sunday's Day 2, and those players will come back at 11 a.m. local time to compete for a share of the seven-figure prize pool with the eventual champion set to lock up $201,529 for their weekend's efforts. The top 128 will make it into the money, meaning there is still some work left to be done for all in contention.

PokerNews will be back at it and in for the long haul Sunday morning with updates on all the action. See you then.

Pope Spikes a Double

Level 13 : 1,500/2,500, 2,500 ante
Philip Pope
Philip Pope

Todd Sladek raised to 5,500 under the gun and Phillip Pope three-bet shoved for 38,000 in the hijack. Action folded back to Sladek and he dropped in calling chips.

Phillip Pope: {q-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}
Todd Sladek: {a-Hearts}{9-Hearts}

Pope found help on the flop {q-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{3-Spades}. The turn {k-Spades} further decreased the number of cards that he needed to fade on the river, which came {k-Clubs} to finish the runout and earn him the double at Sladek's expense.

Sladek Heating Up

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Todd Sladek
Todd Sladek

Todd Sladek opened to 4,500 under the gun from the one-seat and action folded around to the big blind, who looked across the dealer from the eight-seat to eye Sladek's stack in a joking manner before looking back at his own to deliberate whether to commit more of his remaining chips or simply let the hand go preflop.

"I won't even look!" said Sladek.

"You already did!" responded the big blind.

"I won't look again!" Sladek said back. "Either way I win here," he added after another 20 seconds of deliberation.

"I know," the big blind said. "I'm just debating what to do."

"Depends on if you're ready to go right now," Sladek retorted. "You can double through someone else and then give it to me," he added.

"I don't think my ace is any good," said the big blind, sending his cards to the center of the table. Sladek picked up his cards to look at them himself and then tossed them to the muck as well, sending {10-Spades} face up as he did.

Sladek has experienced a heater as of the last level, mentioning a key hand in a three-way all-in preflop scenario where his ace-ten hit a ten against {9-}{7-} and {7-}{7-}, with Ryan Phan being one of the two players to lose in the hand. Sladek has 180,000.

Kings Treat Davis Right

Level 11 : 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Marquez Davis
Marquez Davis

Marquez Davis had opened in the hijack and saw the small blind re-jam. The big blind came over the top, also shoving, and Davis called both players.

Small Blind: {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}
Big Blind: {q-Clubs}{q-Hearts}
Marquez Davis: {k-Clubs}{k-Spades}

A flop of {3-Clubs}{3-Spades}{3-Hearts} gave Davis another card to sweat but the turn {2-Clubs} and river {4-Hearts} complied and he scored the double knockout, bringing his stack over 200,000.

"I've Been Punting To You the Whole Time"

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Kenny Nguyen
Kenny Nguyen

Michael Hinde was in middle position and called an under-the-gun raise to 2,600. From there, action folded around to Kenny Nguyen, who defended his big blind and the three saw a flop of {j-Spades}{k-Clubs}{9-Hearts}. Action checked to Hinde, who reached for chips.

"Easy!" said Nguyen. Hinde bet 6,300 and only Nguyen called. The turn came {3-Diamonds} and Nguyen checked again. Hinde continued, firing another 14,000 forward. Nguyen studied Hinde a bit and then put out matching chips to call.

The river fell {10-Clubs} and Nguyen said he mentioned that he was going to be the one to take the lead and bet. He put out 8,000 and Hinde thought for a few minutes before raising to 20,000. Nguyen called.

Hinde showed {7-Clubs}{6-Clubs} for complete air and Nguyen turned over {q-Hearts}{10-Spades}. His flopped nuts (and eventual second nuts) was more than enough to draw some reaction from both players.

"I've been punting to you the whole time!" Hinde said as both players laughed and regained focus for the next hand.

There was around 8,000 in the middle from preflop action on a board of {3-Spades}{3-Hearts}{9-Hearts}. Three players were in the hand, with the big blind checking to Mike Foley, who bet 2,500 under the gun. The cutoff raised to 8,500 and the big blind check-jammed over the top for 18,000. Foley four-bet shoved and the cutoff folded.

Big Blind: {9-Clubs}{8-Spades}
Mike Foley: {q-Spades}{q-Clubs}

The big blind saw the news and the turn and river rolled off {6-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}. He tapped the felt, gathered his things, and made his way from the tournament area as the pot was shipped to Foley.

McDaniel Holds for the Triple

Level 8 : 400/800, 800 ante
Thomas McDaniel
Thomas McDaniel

A player limped in under the gun and the player on his right raised to 2,000. Three more players called in middle position, the hijack, and on the button, respectively, and then Thomas McDaniel three-bet all in for 13,100.

The original raiser shoved over the top and the middle-position player called all in for less, around 28,000. Two folds followed and all three remaining players' hands were tabled.

Thomas McDaniel: {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}
Early Position: {a-Hearts}{10-Hearts}
Middle Position: {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}

A full house came on the runout {7-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{7-Hearts}, resulting in McDaniel earning the triple while the other two players took back their remaining stacks.

Jackson Sends One To the Showers

Level 6 : 300/500, 500 ante
David Jackson
David Jackson

A player raised to 1,000 under the gun and received two calls, one of which was from David Jackson in the hijack. The flop came {a-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{8-Spades} and the under-the-gun player made a continuation-bet of 3,000. Jackson raised after the player in between folded, making it 9,000, and the under-the-gun player three-bet jammed for around 20,000. Jackson called.

All-In Player: {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}
David Jackson: {8-Clubs}{7-Clubs}

The pair and flush draw saw the turn {6-Diamonds} add an open-ended straight draw to Jackson's total number of outs, which ultimately proved to be too much for the all-in player to fade as the river {4-Spades} gave Jackson the straight and earned him both the pot and knockout.

"I Was Hoping For A Flip"

Level 4 : 100/300, 300 ante
David Larson
David Larson

David Larson had 16,000 in front of him under the gun and was facing a reraise all in for his effective stack of 38,000 from an opponent in the cutoff. He had been in the tank for some time, requesting a clock after not much longer. The dealer complied, but Larson found a call before the floor could arrive. The cutoff quickly tabled his hand, showing {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}.

"I was hoping for a flip," responded Larson as he tabled {7-Spades}{7-Diamonds} in turn. Larson remained in front as the board ran out {j-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{9-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} and earned the double as a result.
