Level 14 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Stephen Graner

Action came at a blistering pace Thursday as play on Day 1a of the Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) Sycuan Main Event ended over a level early, with the designated hard stop of 12% of the field of 79 entries reached late in level 14.

The final hand saw Stephen Graner take the chip lead with 368,000 to send himself and eight other survivors home early as he busted Joshua Royal with a rivered straight versus Royal’s pocket aces.

Among those also advancing to Day 2 was Poker League of Nations (PLON) Founder Lena Evans, who finished the day with 245,000 in chips. Evans boosted her stack late in the day with her elimination of MSPT Hall of Famer and all-time tour money leader Rich Alsup.

Also surviving to return Sunday was Luke Nguyen, who was on the wrong end of a massive pot with just three tables remaining but managed to claw back to advance with 156,000 in chips.

Along with Alsup, other MSPT stalwarts that will have to try their luck on one of the two remaining opening flights were four-time WSOP bracelet winner Adam Friedman and Brad Sailor.

The first of those flights will be Friday at 3 pm local time, with a satellite to the Main Event also on the schedule for 11 am.

Graner Rivers Royal To End Day 1a

Level 14 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Stephen Graner
Stephen Graner

Play has concluded for the day as the hard stop of nine players has been reached following the elimination of Joshua Royal in ugly fashion.

On a flop of {k-Spades}{9-Hearts}{7-Clubs}, Royal led for 12,000 and Graner called.

The turn brought the {q-Hearts}, and after Royal bet another 25,000, Graner moved all in and was called by Royal for less, putting his tournament life on the line on the Day 2 bubble.

Joshua Royal: {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}
Stephen Graner: {k-Clubs}{10-Spades}

Royal's aces were ahead going to the river, but the {j-Clubs} crushed Royal's night, giving Graner a straight and the chip lead, while sending himself and the other eight remaining players home happy as the first flight of the Main Event comes to an end.

Stay tuned for a full recap of all the Day 1a action.

A massive pot developed recently between Robert Fortuno and Luke Nguyen, who each started the hand with over 100,000 in chips.

On a river board of {2-Hearts}{j-Spades}{5-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{a-Diamonds} and over 100,000 in the pot already, Nguyen led out for 20,000 in the small blind, and was met with an all-in raise from Fortuno for 66,500 more.

Nguyen pondered his decision for several minutes, with other players gathering to see the outcome of the massive pot.

Rich Alsup
Rich Alsup

Timothy Vu's seat was recently seen empty, and his tournament executioner Rich Alsup provided the details.

On a four-way flop of {7-}{8-}{9-}, Alsup bet 3,000 and was only called by Vu.

The turn brought a {10-} to put four to a straight on the board and after Alsup checked, Vu jammed for 28,000, which was called by Alsup.

Vu showed {3-}{4-} for a stone bluff, while Alsup had {8-}{8-} for a set of eights to eliminate Vu from the tournament.

Meanwhile at another table, Lena Evans was eliminated, but she has opted to re-enter, receiving a fresh 25,000 in chips.

Vu Vaults over 100,000

Level 5 : 300/500, 500 ante
Timothy Vu
Timothy Vu

Timothy Vu just alerted the PokerNews team that his third bullet is indeed the charm as he's just won a massive pot to jump well over 100,000 chips.

According to Vu, he opened to 3,000 under the gun and was called in middle position by Robert Fortuno, and then three-bet to 17,000 by Luis Yepezcarmona. Vu called and Fortuno also called, leaving himself with approximately 8,000 behind.

The flop came {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} and Vu jammed for his remaining 20,000, Fortuno committed his last chips and Yepezcarmona called as well.

Timothy Vu: {j-Spades}{j-Hearts}
Robert Fortuno: {6-Spades}{4-Spades}
Luis Yepezcarmona: {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}

Vu's set of jacks had both opponents crushed, and he would hold on through the {2-Spades}{4-Clubs} runout to boost his stack to among the chip leaders.
