Wyporowich Leads Day 1b of MSPT Black Hawk After Second Consecutive Hard Stop

Level 15 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Michael Wyporowich
Michael Wyporowich

The Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) Black Hawk $1,110 Main Event has a new chip leader after Day 1b, and it's Canada's Michael Wyporowich (556,000) leading the 25 that bagged from 216 entries when a hard stop was reached with 12% of the field remaining for the tournament's second consecutive day.

Wyporowich got through on his second bullet of the day, one he almost did not fire. However, he chose to get in, and he chose correctly, multiplying his stack multiple times in the final few hours of the evening. With what wound up to be around a full level remaining in the night, Wyporowich had a stack of just over 100K that he doubled once more, and was seen just moments later having increased that figure to over 350K. One last surge brought him over half a million, giving him both the end-of-day and overall chip lead among the 40 collective players that have advanced to Sunday so far.

Dapo Ajayi (475,000) finished the day second in chips, seeing relatively no resistance from his table all day long until ceding a double to Al Hart (214,000) on the final hand of the night. Jerry Morrell (382,000), Peter Nigh (370,000), and Craig Varnell (343,000) all finished with top-five stacks as well.

Others to bag included Ryan Hunsinger (342,000), Terence Reid (234,000), David Blankenship (214,000), Sarah Stefan (132,000), and Daniel Sepiol (122,000).

Meanwhile, players such as Will Givens, Vincent Moscati, Bryan Piccioli, Joe Serock, and DJ Buckley were among those that did not make it through day. One more flight remains, set to begin Saturday at noon with a full house expected as usual for weekends inside Bally's Black Hawk, and registration will open at 10 a.m. Thus, all who wish to enter are advised to register early to avoid having to wait as an alternate.

PokerNews will be back Saturday to bring you updates on the final flight from start to finish. Until then, take care.

Serock Gets Shot Down

Level 13 : 2,000/3,000, 3,000 ante
Joe Serock
Joe Serock

Ian Mangan opened the action with a raise to 7,000 in the cutoff and David Blankenship called in the small blind. Joe Serock was in the big blind and re-jammed for 55,000, with Mangan calling and Blankenship quickly folding thereafter.

Joe Serock: {a-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}
Ian Mangan: {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}

"Whoops," said Serock upon seeing Mangan's bullets. He picked up a backdoor wheel draw on the flop {4-Spades}{10-Hearts}{j-Hearts}, and the turn {2-Hearts} gave him three direct outs to the improbable double. Unfortunately for him, none came as the river {k-Spades} completed the runout to spell his elimination.

Collins Catching Heat

Level 12 : 1,500/2,500, 2,500 ante
Greg Collins
Greg Collins

Greg Collins was just seen having a pot shipped his way to eliminate a short-stacked player, building his stack up to nearly 300,000 in the process. However, he had a stack of 280,000 prior to the hand and confirmed that he had won a huge pot to get him up to 240,000 at the beginning of the level.

In that hand, he went four ways to a flop of {k-}{9-}{5-} with one spade and everybody checked, bringing the turn {a-Spades}. Collins checked and the player on his left bet one-third pot, with a call and a fold ensuing before Collins also called.

The river then fell {5-Spades} to bring a third spade on board, and Collins led out with a down-bet from the amount on the previous street. The player on his left went all in and Collins immediately called when it was his turn to do so.

Greg Collins: {q-Spades}{9-Spades}
Opponent: {a-}{10-}-red

Collins has since chipped up a bit and appears to be just shy of 300K, making him one of the largest stacks in the room as the number of players in the tournament continues to drop.

Buckley Runs into the Nuts

Level 11 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
DJ Buckley
DJ Buckley

Gabriel Wechter saw action fold to him on the button and opened to 6,000, receiving calls from both Al Hart in the small blind and DJ Buckley in the big blind. The flop came {j-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} and Hart checked to Buckley, who went all in for 19,500, roughly a pot-sized bet. Wechter quickly folded and Hart called immediately thereafter.

Al Hart: {k-Clubs}{q-Hearts}
DJ Buckley: {10-Spades}{9-Hearts}

Buckley had flopped bottom two pair but ran it into Hart's king-high straight.

"Deuce!" said Hart. The turn came {4-Hearts}.

"Deuce!" responded Buckley. The river {8-Spades} accomplished the same thing as a deuce, leaving Hart's straight to top Buckley's tens up and eliminate him from the tournament.

Sanchez Doubles Through Simmer

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Sergio Sanchez
Sergio Sanchez

Sergio Sanchez opened to 2,700 under the gun and was three-bet to 5,000 by Jarred Simmer one seat over. Action folded back to Sanchez and he called.

Sanchez check-called a continuation-bet of 5,000 from Simmer on the flop {7-Spades}{4-Hearts}{q-Spades} and a second barrel of 7,000 on the turn {j-Clubs}. He then led out for 15,000 on the river {5-Diamonds} and saw Simmer slide in a stack of chips greater than what he had left in his stack, which he wasted no time committing.

"Top two pair," said Simmer, showing {q-Hearts}{j-Hearts}. Sanchez then tabled {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades} for top set and scored the double. His remaining stack was counted to be 46,400 and the pot was shipped his way once it was made right.

Clint Lilienthal
Clint Lilienthal

Preflop action brought 13,300 into the middle with three-way action going to {k-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}. Both blinds checked to Clint Lilienthal, who jammed for 17,700 from the cutoff. The small blind folded and then the big blind called.

Clint Lilienthal: {k-Clubs}{10-Hearts}
Big Blind: {q-Hearts}{j-Spades}

"The nuts," responded the dealer upon seeing the big blind's hand. However, Lilienthal was the one to wind up with the nuts when all was said and done, missing the turn {2-Hearts} but filling up on the river {k-Diamonds} to score the dub.

Hunsinger Fades the Snap Call

Level 7 : 400/800, 800 ante
Ryan Hunsinger
Ryan Hunsinger

Dapo Ajayi raised to 2,100 under the gun and saw action fold around to Ryan Hunsinger, who was on the button and three-bet to 6,700. Ajayi asked to see Hunsinger's stack briefly, which appeared to be about 43K behind, and then called.

The flop dropped {6-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{7-Hearts} and Ajayi checked to Hunsinger, who continuation-bet 8,100. Ajayi called and the turn came {4-Spades}, where he checked again.

"All in," said Hunsinger, pushing forward his stack. Ajayi motioned to the dealer for a count, and Hunsinger's stack was totaled to be 35,800. Ajayi went Full Sherman, entering the tank for at least 90 seconds before Hunsinger spoke up: "Well, I faded the snap, so..."

Ajayi responded, "My hand's not that great. Just relax." He then thought for more than another full minute and eventually released his hand.

"Show one?" pleaded Ajayi. Instead, Hunsinger traded his unexposed cards for the pot. "Good hand," added Ajayi.

Stefan Stacks Gonzales

Level 6 : 300/600, 600 ante
Sarah Stefan
Sarah Stefan

Action was heads up on a completed board of {9-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{2-Hearts} between Sarah Stefan in the cutoff and Danny Gonzales, who was in the cutoff. Stefan checked to Gonzales, who made a bet of 10,200, which looked to be slightly greater than the size of the pot. Stefan responded with a check-jam, sending Gonzales into deliberation for a few moments.

"I'm sure I'm beat," said Gonzales as he called and showed {j-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} for the second nuts. His hunch was correct, as Stefan showed {k-Hearts}{j-Hearts} to win the pot and knock out Gonzales.

Level 4 : 200/400, 400 ante
Craig Varnell
Craig Varnell

All of the chips got into the middle between Craig Varnell, who was on the button, and an opponent in the big blind who was all in for around 40,000.

All-In Player: {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}
Craig Varnell: {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}

"Nice hand, brother," said the all-in player, beginning to walk away from the table.

"It's not over yet," responded Varnell. The player continued to walk away nonetheless, looking over his shoulder while barely remaining within eyeshot of the table by the river of a runout {2-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{2-Hearts}.
