Huge Pot for Steven

Level 4 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Pierre Garand and Brandon Steven
Pierre Garand and Brandon Steven

A compelling hand just played out between Brandon Steven and Mark Teltscher. It was Steven who opened the action, raising it up to 60,000 from under-the-gun, Teltscher three-bet to 150,000 on the button, Steven four-bet to 287,000 and, after confirmation on the raise size, Teltscher stuck around.

So there was already over 600,000 in the pot by the time the dealer fanned a {8-Spades}{7-Hearts}{3-Spades} flop on the felt. Fairly quickly Steven bet 150,000 but there was nothing immediate about Teltscher's actions. He thought for some time, reached deep and raised to 475,000 total. This time, it was Steven who needed a count and after he'd received one he put in the extra chips required.

That took the two players to a {9-Clubs} turn card, where there would be more betting. Teltscher retained the betting lead, he bet 600,000 into the 1,550,000 pot and Steven again smooth called. This pot was getting serious and the {7-Spades} river not only completed the flush draw but for good measure, it paired the board.

Steven quickly checked, but again Teltscher was very considered in his actions which is hardly surprising given the scale of the pot and the tournament. He concluded by betting a cool 1,000,000. Steven sighed and looked at the board and his own chips before electing to call.

Teltscher opened {A-Hearts}{A-Diamonds} and shot out of his chair to see what Steven had, the latter could beat it as he showed {J-Diamonds}{10-Spades} for a turned straight and Teltscher looked to the heavens as he realized he'd lost a huge pot. He's lost around half his stack while Steven is up to over 8,000,000.

"That was a horrible river card for both of us," said Steven to Teltscher. "Nice hand Brandon, maybe I should check," wondered Teltscher. "I think you played it perfectly," replied Steven.

The next hand the two butted heads again, Teltscher raised to 60,000, Steven three-bet out of the big blind and said to Teltscher. "Let it go," the Brit paused a few beats and then replied. "Do you show me if I let it go?" Steven replied that he would and good to his word he turned over {K-Clubs}{K-Spades} after Teltscher had mucked.

Einhorn Raises River, Pantling Folds Aces

Level 4 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante

From the cutoff, Andrew Pantling raised to 50,000 and on the button, David Einhorn called.

Pantling bet 105,000 on the {10-Spades}{7-Spades}{4-Spades} flop, 225,000 on the {4-Hearts} turn and 630,000 on the {K-Hearts} river.

Einhorn called the flop and turn but raised to 2 million on the river.

Pantling just about instantly open mucked his {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts} and tapped the table. Einhorn smiled and started stacking.

Shak Makes a Big Laydown

Level 4 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante

Dan Shak did not want to fold, that much was clear. He'd bet 300,000 on the turn of a {Q-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{K-Clubs} board and Yaqi Sun had raised it up to what looked like 1,100,000 total. Shak wanted a look at how much Sun had behind (roughly 3,300,000) and Shak was in a quandary.

He tanked into the break and as he folded he flashed his hand to Scott Seiver who was standing about 10 meters back from the table and is Dan Shak's coach for this event.

Break

Level 4 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante

Visual Chip Count in the Break (full)

Level 4 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante

Bobby Baldwin is the extreme short stack with just 125,000 in chips.

Daniel Negreanu: Poker Coach

Level 5 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante

You'll usually find Daniel Negreanu playing in the biggest buy-in events on the planet. The Canadian superstar is number one on the all-time money list, in part thanks to the $8,288,001 he won when he finished second in the Big One for One Drop in Las Vegas on 2014.

However, with the 2016 edition being for recreational players only, Negreanu’s route into the tournament has come via the coaching side. Each player is allowed to appoint a coach if they so wish and Negreanu is the wingman of none other than Guy Laliberté. So how did it come about then? “He approached me about a month ago,” Negreanu told PokerNews during a break in play. “I thought it sounded like fun and I wanted to support a great cause.”

During the course of play, players are allowed to consult their coaches whenever they like as long as they don’t have a live hand but the coaching between Negreanu and Laliberté started earlier than the shuffle up and deal. “I got here a few days early, we’ve been hanging out on his yacht and going through a few things.”

While those pointers may not have paid dividends on Laliberté’s first bullet, he’s confident in Laliberté’s abilities. “He’s more relaxed now, he’s cooled off a bit and so I’m going to let him come to me when he wants to,” said Negreanu.

Baldwin Eliminated

Level 5 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
Bobby Baldwin
Bobby Baldwin

Bobby Baldwin was down to just 125,000 and lost those chips shortly after play commenced.

We missed it, but Antonio Esfandiari on the rail tol dus some details.

Baldwin found {9-}{9-} and moved all in. Alfred Decarolis on the button woke up with {K-}{K-} and was soon facing off against Baldwin.

The board brought nothing but blanks and Baldwin was the second player to be eliminated after Guy Laliberté busted earlier today. If Baldwin, like Laliberté, will buy back in remains to be seen.

Kamer Alyanakyan vs. Guy Laliberté

Level 5 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante

Kamer Alyanakyan raised to 70,000 from under the gun and two players called: Guy Laliberté in the cutoff and James Strasser in the big blind.

The flop cames {q-Hearts}{9-Spades}{5-Hearts} and Strasser checked. Alyanakyan continued for 105,000 and only Laliberté called. Alyanakyan bet again on the {2-Clubs}, this time for 275,000. Laliberé thought for a minute, then folded.

Shak Springs a Check-Raise

Level 5 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante

I joined the table to see a {4-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{8-Spades} flop on the felt and could see that Dan Shak and Pierre Garand were the only two players still with cards. The dealer had done a great job of lining up the chips so it looked as if each player had put in 160,000 each pre-flop, suggesting that this was a three-bet pot.

Shak had checked the action to Garand and the Canadian player fired out a bet of 250,000, Shak mulled this over for a while before check-raising to 625,000 in total. Garand was taken aback by this move but composed himself, thought for around 20 seconds and then folded. Pot to Shak.
