Andrew Pantling Leads Final Table of Big One for One Drop

Level 15 : 150,000/300,000, 50,000 ante
Andrew Pantling
Andrew Pantling

One of poker’s enduring myths is the curse of the chip leader and here at the stunning Casino de Monte-Carlo that came true as Al De Carolis, who began the day in top spot, was the last man out today. In keeping with the day, it was a cooler as De Carolis ran queens into Rick Salomon’s kings for his final 25 big blinds.

When the final eight return tomorrow at noon to play for the first prize of €11,111,111 this is how they’ll stack up:

It took just under five hours of play to go from 24 to 8 and for most of that time, Andrew Pantling, who started the day seventh in chips, held the chip lead. He survived a couple of early dents in the opening hour before his stack began trending upwards.

While Pantling was leading at the first break, the truth is that the opening two levels were all about Paul Phua. In that 90-minute period, Phua took care of Patrick Madden (aces versus kings), Tony Bloom (jacks versus ace-nine), Mark Teltscher (jacks versus ace-ten) and, most notably, Guy Laliberté. The One Drop founder got his final 15 big blinds in with ace-queen and was in great shape against Phua’s king-queen. However, the former Macau junkiteer flopped top two pair and the turn and river bricked to send Laliberté to the rail.

Quickly the final three tables became two and up on the feature stage we saw, potentially, a tournament-defining pot play out between Bob Safai and Pantling. The chips flew in on the turn of a {J-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} board. Safai had the nuts with queen-ten and Pantling had two-pair with nine-eight. An eight on the river filled Pantling up and sent a shell-shocked Safai tumbling out. “So sick,” said Antonio Esfandiari, who was watching on as Safai’s coach. That pot gave Pantling almost a quarter of the chips in play and he upped the aggression accordingly.

Whilst that was undoubtedly the hand of the day it was far from the end of the action as big pots were the order of the day. Paul Newey and Talal Shakerchi had been eliminated by the time Al De Carolis briefly reclaimed the chip lead. An accidental flop re-raise from De Carolis worked out pretty well as Pantling set him in holding top pair and De Carolis called with a backdoor straight and flush draw. He hit the straight draw on the river, which knocked Pantling down to second spot.

The final dozen players soon became nine as Sean Dempsey, Paul Phua and Jason Strasser were eliminated by Elton Tsang, Rick Salomon and Brandon Steven respectively. Just like that the unofficial final table was set. Jack Effel offered the players the chance to play down to six which would mean everyone who would come back on the final day would’ve been in the money, but a couple of players objected and wanted to stop with eight left as planned.

On just the twelfth hand of the unofficial final table, a kings versus queens encounter between Salomon and De Carolis meant the latter bubbled the final table and play was done for the day. Two players will leave empty handed tomorrow, that much we know.

The elite eight will return at 11:45am local time and many of them may will be wearing a tuxedo as there’s a company providing them if they’ve not traveled with one of their own. We’re also promised a theatrical entrance and beginning to what’s shaping up to be a fantastic final table, during which levels will increase to one-hour in length. This is what the final eight will be playing for tomorrow:

Alfred De Carolis Eliminated in 9th Place

Level 15 : 150,000/300,000, 50,000 ante
Alfred De Carolis
Alfred De Carolis

Hand #12: From the hijack, Rick Salomon opened for 750,000. The cutoff folded but Alfred De Carolis on the button moved all in for what appeared to be a little over 7.5 million. Both blinds released instantly.

"How much is that Al?" asked Salomon seconds before he called, "I have kings."

Rick Salomon: {K-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}
Alfred De Carolis: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}

The start of day chip leader was in trouble, and would find no help from the board: {3-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{J-Hearts}{10-Spades}.

Jack Effel asked how the table was feeling and James Bord was very clear he wanted to quit for the day because he was tired. Salomon agreed, as he hadn't slept yet he said.

And so it was agreed play was done for the day, even though Voulgaris wanted to play on till the bubble was done for.

A Raise By Mistake Results in a Double Up for De Carolis

Level 14 : 120,000/240,000, 40,000 ante
Alfred De Carolis
Alfred De Carolis

Action folded to Andrew Pantling in the cutoff and he opened for 600,000. The button and small blind folded but Alfred De Carolis in the big blind made the call.

The flop came {5-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{2-Spades} and De Carolis carefully tapped the table to check. Pantling made a bet of 725,000 and De Carolis looked at his chips before cutting some out and putting them in the middle while glancing at Pantling's bet.

By accident, De Carolis had taken two 500,000-chips and two 100,000-chips - making it 1.2 million and effectively raising. He was forced to make it 1,425,000 and action was back on Pantling.

"I'm all in" Pantling said without much emotion.

De Carolis thought about it for about 10 seconds before he said "Call!" with a whole lot more passion.

Alfred De Carolis: {K-Spades}{6-Spades}
Andrew Pantling: {7-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}

The {8-Clubs} on the turn didn't bring any cheering or clapping, and neither did the {7-Hearts} on the river initially.

De Carolis left his shoulder hanging for just a bit before Haralabos Voulgaris said "Straight". Only then De Carolis realized he had won the hand and he yelled "Yes!"

As the counting started (De Carolis was about to get his 10,545,000 stack back times twice plus the small blind and antes) De Carolis said: "Andrew, you really tried to powerplay me! I really meant to just call."

"That's why you play poker," Voulgaris laughed, "You fuck up and get there."

Sick Beat Sends Safai to the Rail

Level 13 : 100,000/200,000, 30,000 ante
Andrew Pantling

Bad beats hurt period. In a €1,000,000 tournament, they must sting like crazy and it's a feeling Bob Safai is going through right now after losing a monster pot to Andrew Pantling to bust the Big One For One Drop.

Elton Tsang lit the touch paper, making it 600,000 to go from under-the-gun, Pantling called from middle position and Safai did likewise from the big blind. The {J-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} flop was checked through and the {8-Hearts} fell on the turn. Safai bet big, leading out for 1,500,000, Tsang folded and action was on Pantling. He took a look at his opponent's stack (it looked like Safai had about 9,000,000 total) and then slid out enough orange 500,000 chips to set Safai all-in. He almost beat him into the pot.

Pantling: {9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}
Safai: {Q-Spades}{10-Spades}

It was a turned straight against turned two pair, Pantling still had four outs for the win and the {8-Spades} river made him a full house. "So sick," said Antonio Esfandiari, who's here coaching Safai. Even Pantling winced as the river card hit the table, it was that kind of beat. A shell shocked Safai wandered away from the table to the bleachers, while Pantling, with a stack of 34,370,000 has almost 25% of the chips in play.

David Einhorn

Jason Strasser raised to 450,000. David Einhorn then three-bet all in for about 2,800,000. Strasser called and the hands are tabled.

Strasser: {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}
Einhorn: {a-Spades}{9-Diamonds}

The board came {j-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{2-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{8-Spades}. Strasser won with his ace king, and Einhorn was eliminated.

With Einhorn's bustout, there are now 16 players remaining, and they will redraw to the final two tables.

Bob Safai Eliminates Dan Shak

Level 12 : 80,000/160,000, 20,000 ante
Dan Shak
Dan Shak

Action folded to Dan Shak in the small blind and he open-raised to 425,000. Big blind Bob Safai casually made the call.

The flop came {9-Spades}{7-Clubs}{6-Hearts} and Shak checked. Safai bet 800,000 and Shak called.

With the {9-Hearts} pairing the board on the turn, Shak checked again. Safai bet 2.4 million and Shak moved all in for a little more than double that. Safai instantly called.

Bob Safai: {10-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}
Dan Shak: {K-Diamonds}{7-Spades}

The {J-Hearts} on the river couldn't help Shak and after it turned out Safai had him just nearly covered, Shak made his exit from the tournament.

Guy Laliberté Eliminated

Guy Laliberté was down to his last 2,440,000 and got his chips in before the flop holding {A-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}.

Paul Phua was the one looking him up, bringing the inferior {K-Clubs}{Q-Clubs} to battle.

Laliberté, one of two players that fired a second bullet yesterday, got unlucky with the flop coming {Q-Hearts}{K-Hearts}{10-Clubs}.

The {8-Diamonds} on the turn and {9-Diamonds} on the river were blanks and Laliberté said his goodbyes.

Gurtovoy Doubles

Level 11 : 60,000/120,000, 20,000 ante
Anatoly Gurtovoy
Anatoly Gurtovoy

We walked up to table 11 when there was already quit a lot of some chips in the middle.

On a flop of {A-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{3-Spades} we saw Talal Shakcerchi with a bet of 300,000 in front of him, while Anatoly Gurtovoy, who had apparently check-raised, had 800,000 out. Shakerchi shoved all in and Gurtovoy instantly called.

Anatoly Gurtovoy: {A-Clubs}{Q-Spades}
Talal Shakcerchi: {K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}

The {K-Clubs} on the turn brought some help to Shakerchi but not enough to get him in front.

The {J-Spades} on the river was a blank and Gurtovoy was visibly excited. He held out his wrist in front of his neighbor Haralobos Voulgaris and Voulgaris took his pulse and confirmed Gurtovoy was very excited doubling up.

The table laughed, including Shakerchi who aprted ways with 4,910,000 in chips and was left short.

Day 2 of the Biggest Ever Buy-In Poker Event: You Play the Game, You Pay the Price

One Drop Extravaganza
One Drop Extravaganza

After 10 levels of 45 minutes each on Day 1, still 24 players of 28 entries remain. In two hours time, Day 2 commences of the 2016 Monte-Carlo One Drop Extravaganza €1,000,000 Big One For One Drop. The goal is to play down to a final table of 8.

Players still have the option to buy in, which would grant them a crisp 5,000,000-stack. With blinds starting at 60,000/120,000 with a 20,000-ante, that means a 41 big blind stack awaits players that enter now.

Leading the way is entrepreneur and investor Alfred De Carolis. Originally from Pittsburgh, PA, De Carolis earned a business degree from the College of Santa Fe in the early 1980’s; and has, since then, become a respected serial entrepreneur. His latest investment includes the acclaimed 9021PHO. This restaurant, featuring an exquisite fusion of French and Vietnamese cuisines, includes five successful locations in California. His ventures also include the Hollywood movie industry, where Decarolis collaborated as an executive producer with 4-time Oscar-nominated star, Leonardo DiCaprio. Their documentary, "The 11th hour", was released in 2007 and designated a Critics’ Pick by the New York Times’ film reviewers. At the 2014 WSOP, Decarolis finished an impressive third place in Event #2, No Limit Texas Hold'em - Mixed Max, earning him $290,622.

The shortest stack in the room is Tony Bloom, who's Business Insider profile reads like an exciting adventure novel. Bloom is a successful property investor, sports bettor and the creator of Starlizard, a sports betting consulting firm. Known as "The Lizard", his first major win was in the 2004 Aussie Millions for A$426,500. Over the last few years, he’s focused on being the chairman of his beloved Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club.

There's a French-Canadian singer, known for his work in the musical Notre-Dame de Paris playing Quasimodo in both the original French and English casts (Pierre Garand, better known as Garou), a player that gained widespread notoriety after a sex tape with Paris Hilton leaked (Rick Salomon) and a bunch of other larger than life characters. This event is truly unique, so much is clear.

PokerNews will again be on the floor the entire day with live updates from the first flop till the last river. Besides coverage of the €1,000,000 buy-in Big One for One Drop, we'll also sporadically peek at the €25,000-No-Limit Hold'em and €10,000-Mixed Games NLHE/PLO 6-max events that'll run today.
