Alex Yazbeck Leads 30 Survivors After Day 1 of Record-Breaking Star Sydney 6-Max Event

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Day 1 Chipleader Alex Yazbeck
Day 1 Chipleader Alex Yazbeck

Tournament staff at The Star Sydney was very optimistic before the start of the $1,100 6-Max Event and their expectations would not only be met but eclipsed with an incredible turnout. By the time the first three levels were completed, the field size of the previous year was already surpassed and the entries and re-entries kept coming in.

Once the registration had officially closed, a record-breaking field of 356 entries emerged to create a prize pool of A$356,000, which will be shared among the top 36 finishers. Throughout the 15 levels of 40 minutes on Day 1, the money bubble was reached in the final level of the night and half a dozen contenders headed to the payout desk to collect their winnings.

When it came to bagging and tagging, two players had turned their starting stack of 15,000 into more than half a million and Alex Yazbeck claimed the top spot with 549,500, closely followed by Michael Oscuro with 534,000. Yazbeck fired multiple bullets in the event and his father Mark and brother Patrick were also involved in the action, but they failed to make it through to Day 2.

Other big stacks and notables among the 30 Day 1 survivors are Nauvneel Kashyap (408,500), Guangyu Wang (319,500),John Rosario (308,000), Adrian Salter (270,500), Navid King (193,500), Connie Graham (169,500), Michael Seymour (145,500), Sam Capra (124,000), Michel Bouskila (116,000), Dale Marsland (115,000), Chad Awerbuch (71,000) and Vesko Zmukic (46,000).

Among the notables that didn't take home a portion of the prize pool were Shivan Abdine, Matthew Wakeman, Jarred Graham, Hamish Crawshaw, defending champion Hun Wei Lee, Craig Blight, Michael Kanaan, Minh Nguyen, Michael O'Grady, David Wang, and $5k Challenge runner-up Vincent Huang.

Abdine ran his top pair with king-ten into the pocket aces of Crawshaw and re-entered without being able to run up a big stack. Crawshaw was not able to keep up the momentum either and headed to the rail before the dinner break. Wakeman was ousted in a three-way all in when his ace-ten suited and the ace-queen of Matt Pongrass failed to connect with the board as Capra held up with pocket queens.

Dejan Boskovic Sr reached the final table of the $5k Challenge and received A$15,496 for his ninth-place finish. He was also cruising along for most of the day, but that all changed when he flopped top pair with king-queen suited. Connie Graham had the better kicker with ace-queen and Boskovic Sr headed to the rail one hand later. Only a few minutes later, Huang saw his hopes of another final table appearance come to an end when his queen-eight suited couldn't crack pocket kings.

Just before the money bubble, former big stack Luis Arrilucea rivered a full house with ace-queen only for Guangyu Wang to turn over pocket kings for the superior full house on the turn already. The money bubble itself would last all but one hand. Ryan Hong three-bet jammed his short stack with ace-nine and Tu Tran called with six-five suited to hit a pair on the flop.

Among the six players to receive a portion of the prize pool already were Rehman Kassam, Dejan Boskovic, and Andrew White. All remaining 30 players have A$2,385 locked up for their efforts, but the trophy and top prize of A$89,003 will be on everyone's mind when the action kicks off the following day at 12.30 p.m. local time with level 16 and blinds of 3,000/6,000 with an ante of 1,000.

Stay tuned for all the action on the final day, as the PokerNews team will be on the floor from start-to-finish for an exciting day of six-max action.

Ryan Hong: {a-Hearts}{9-Spades}
Tu Tran: {6-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}

The board ran out {8-Hearts}{4-Spades}{2-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{8-Clubs} for Tran to turn a pair of sixes to burst the bubble as Hong quickly made his way out of the tournament area.

Wang Busts Arrilucea

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Luis Arrilucea
Luis Arrilucea

The next big pot of the tournament resulted in the elimination of Luis Arrilucea and vaulted Guangyu Wang into a big stack. It was a setup hand, as both players made a full house on the board {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{a-Clubs} with Wang having the best of it holding the {k-Hearts}{k-Spades} for kings full.

Arrilucea only had {a-Spades}{q-Hearts} for aces full of queens and departed just shy of the money. Only a few minutes prior, Will Davies had also been eliminated and there are currently 38 players remaining.

Straight Flush on the Board Keeps Pappas Alive

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Steve Pappas
Steve Pappas

Steve Pappas shoved from the cutoff for 13,500 and was called by Andrew Miller on the button and Miray Badaoui in the small blind.

The flop came {5-Spades}{4-Spades}{2-Spades}, both Badaoui and Miller checked.

The turn was the {6-Spades}, Badaoui bet and Miller quickly folded so the cards could go on their backs.

Steve Pappas: {k-Spades}{10-Spades}
Miray Badaoui: {a-Spades}{8-Spades}

They both held a flush but Babaoui had the nut flush.

The river completed the board with the {3-Spades} for Pappas to cheer loudly and high five another player as the straight flush on the board meant that he and Badaoui would chop the pot.

Big Double for Salter

Level 13 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Adrian Salter
Adrian Salter

A reraise to 22,000 was in front of Lachlan Dykes and Adrian Salter then moved all in from the cutoff. Dykes asked for a count and once it was deemed to be in the ballpark of 110,000, Dykes tossed in a single chip for the call without waiting for an exact count.

Adrian Salter: {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}
Lachlan Dykes: {j-Hearts}{j-Spades}

The biggest pot of the tournament so far went in favor of Salter, who got there on the turn of a board {9-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{a-Spades}{7-Diamonds}. The double-up was for 110,100 and that put a major dent into the stack of Dykes.

Vincent Huang
Vincent Huang

Vincent Huang shoved from under the gun for around 27,000 and was called by Andrew Miller on the button while the blinds folded.

Vincent Huang: {q-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}
Andrew Miller: {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}

The flop came {4-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} for Huang find a flush draw and a gutshot to the straight.

The turn brought them the {j-Spades} which didn't change things, neither did the {a-Clubs} on the river as Huang was sent away from the feature table on which he finished second last night in the $5k Challenge for A$106,043.

Graham Doubles Through Boskovic Sr

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Dejan Boskovic Sr
Dejan Boskovic Sr

With a ton of chips already in the middle and the completed board showing {q-Spades}{9-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}, Dejan Boskovic Sr checked and Connie Graham moved all in for 40,700. Boskovic Sr gave it some thought and made the call.

Graham rolled over the {a-Hearts}{q-Diamonds} and Boskovic Sr was beat with the {k-Clubs}{q-Clubs}. Both stacks were counted and Boskovic Sr had Graham covered by fewer than one big blind. He ended up forced all in for 1,100 out off the big blind in the next hand and Sam Capra raised to 4,500 in order to force out everyone else.

Dejan Boskovic Sr: {a-Spades}{2-Clubs}
Sam Capra: {10-Hearts}{9-Hearts}

The {q-Hearts}{10-Spades}{4-Hearts} flop gave Capra a pair and a flush draw, leaving Boskovic Sr with very few outs. Nothing changed on the {6-Clubs} turn and the {3-Hearts} river improved Capra to a flush.

"Good luck darling," Boskovic Sr said on his way out when shaking hands with Graham.

Matt Pongrass jammed the cutoff for his last 20,000 and Matthew Wakeman reshoved the button only for Sam Capra to quickly call out of the small blind.

Pongrass tabled {a-}{q-} while Wakeman held {a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}. Capra had the best of it with {q-Hearts}{q-Spades} and the board came {k-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{2-Spades}{8-Clubs}{5-Hearts} to eliminate Pongrass and Wakeman.

Raut Quadruples and Then Triples Up

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Jayesh Raut
Jayesh Raut

Andrew White raised to 2,100 from the cutoff and Jayesh Raut called for his last 500 on the button while the blinds folded.

Jayesh Raut: {10-Hearts}{2-Spades}
Andrew White: {j-Spades}{8-Clubs}

The board ran out {k-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{3-Diamonds} for Raut to find a pair of tens on the turn to beat the flopped eights of White to quadruple.

The hand right after, White raised to 2,100 from the hijack and Raut shoved in the cutoff for 3,000 as it seems that the dealer forgot to give White the 500 change from the big blind in the previous hand. Mohamed Ali called in the small blind. White called for the extra 900.

Ali and White both checked through the whole {2-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} board. Ali tabled {10-Hearts}{8-Hearts}, White held {k-Diamonds}{q-Hearts} for Raut to triple up with {k-Hearts}{9-Spades} for the rivered pair of nines.

Andrew White
Andrew White

Minh Nguyen opened from under the gun and Andrew White called from the button.

The flop came {9-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{7-Hearts}, Nguyen continued with a bet of 2,000 and White responded with a raise to 6,000. Nguyen shoved for 16,000 and White called with the bigger stack.

Minh Nguyen: {a-Clubs}{9-Spades}
Andrew White: {9-Hearts}{2-Hearts}

Nguyen had flopped top pair while holding the top-kicker. White had the same pair but the lower kicker, he was also sitting on a flush draw.

The turn brought them the {j-Spades} which didn't change things, the {2-Spades} on the river however gave White two pair to eliminate Nguyen from the tournament.
