Welcome to Day 1b of the 2015 Unibet Open Glasgow Main Event

2015 Unibet Open Glasgow
2015 Unibet Open Glasgow

Sunday is the day of rest for many people in this world, but not if you're a poker player in Scotland because today is the day you can begin your quest for some Unibet Open Glasgow glory. At 12:00 noon BST Day 1b of the €1,100 (£800+£80) buy-in Main Event commences and should see a bumper crowd descend on the home of Scottish football giants Celtic F.C.

Celtic Park is more accustomed to housing upwards of 60,000 green-and-white hooped shirt sporting fans who loyally cheer on their beloved teams, but for the next few days the only action it sees is that of triple barrel bluffs, audacious calls and disciplined folds.

Whoever competes today is going to have their work cut out if they are to accumulate anywhere near the number of chips that the Day 1a chip leader did over the course of nine 60-minute levels. Daniel Chutrov of Bulgaria started with 30,000 chips like everyone else in the field, yet he somehow ended the night with the welcomed problem of having to cram 539,500 chips into his overnight chip bag.

To put his achievement into perspective, the closest anyone got to him in terms of chips was Katja Svendsen who finished Day 1a with 169,000 betting tokens in her stack!

Some of the United Kingdom's finest poker talent is set to lock horns with some European heroes today and we can hardly contain our excitement. Tune into PokerNews' live reporting pages from noon for all of the action, as it happens, from the 2015 Unibet Open Glasgow Main Event.

Shuffle Up and Deal!

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

The cards are in the air here at Celtic Park in sunny Glasgow! There are more than 110 players in their seats already with plenty more expected to pile through the doors while late registration is open, which happens to be until the end of the fourth 60-minute level.

Good luck everyone, let's find some hands for you folks reading at home.

Five Familiar Faces

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Among the 114 players registers so far, we've spotted five faces that should be familiar to readers of PokerNews.

Scottish trio Mudasser Hussain, Dean Hutchinson and Paul McTaggart are all playing Day 1b, while former football (soccer to our American readers) star Richard Witschge obviously enjoyed his participation in the Sport Stars Special event yesterday because he's registered, too.

John Eames has taken his seat over on Table 2 after driving up to Glasgow this morning. Eames is probably the most experienced and accomplished player in the Day 1b field with more than $2 million in live cashes to his name.

Early Pot For McTaggart

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

The action passed to Paul "BobaFett" McTaggart on the button and he min-raised to 200. Andrzej Kulka called from the small blind and Daniel Van Kelkeren called from the big blind.

The flop fell {Q-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{2-Spades} and both blinds checked to Mctaggart who made a continuation bet of 250. Only Kulka called and the dealer placed the {J-Spades} onto the turn.

Kulka checked and then called when McTaggart fired a second barrel, one worth 500 chips. The river brought the {A-Diamonds} into the equation and Kulka tapped the table and checked for a third time. McTaggart kept his foot firmly on the gas and bet 1,200 into his opponent. Kulka took another look at his hole cards and sent them into the muck.

Nice early pot for McTaggart who should be confident of a deep run here on home soil.

Return to Sendar

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

On a flop reading {Q-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{8-Spades}, Jan Magnus Karlsson checked from the big blind putting the action on Imro Sendar on the button. Sendar reached for chips and bet 400, a bet that Karlsson callled with little hesitation.

The turn was the {A-Hearts} and before Kalde could act Sendar bet 1,100. The dealer asked Karlsson if he had checked and he said it didn't really matter as he was folding anyway.

Unconventional Play Nets Westerman Chips

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Koert Westerman limped in for 100 from under the gun and after one player folded, George McDonald raised to 325. McDonald's bet was first called by Jan Magnus Karlsson in the big blind and then Westerman.

The dealer spread the {10-Spades}{5-Spades}{6-Clubs} flop, Karlsson checked and Westerman led out for 500 chips. McDonald peeked at his hole cards, smiled and then folded. Karlsson mucked around 25 seconds later.

Table 5, where these players are seated, seems to be playing the game in good spirits. There's laughing and joking among the players, let's see if that continues once one of them suffers a bad beat!

Two Poker Goliaths Buy In

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Two more big names have entered the fray here in Glasgow, a duo that have more than $4.7 million in live winnings between them.

The Netherlands' Pieter de Korver, a former European Poker Tour Grand Final champion is in his seat and riffling chips, while at the other side of the room is Denmark's Morten Mortensen who is sure to ruffle a few feathers today and would be a good bet for a deep run in this event.
