Strachinescu Leads 75 Survivors After Day 1b; O'Kearney With Decent Stack

Level 11 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Dara O'Kearney among the big stacks on Day 1b
Dara O'Kearney among the big stacks on Day 1b

The second starting day of the 10-year anniversary edition of the Unibet Open is in the books and another 335 players ponied up the buy-in of €1,100 Main Event at the luxurious JW Marriott Bucharest Grand Hotel to boost the total field to 502 entries. The guarantee was met and, minus the 3% fees for staff, a prize pool of €486,940 was set with the top 71 spots earning at least €1,880 for their efforts while the winner will take home the trophy and first-place payout of €90,925.

Until then it is still a long way to go and yet another Romanian player ended up on top of the chip counts after 11 levels of 60 minutes each. Only 75 hopefuls bagged up and will join the 39 Day 1a survivors to make for 114 survivors in total for Day 2 here in Bucharest. Marian Strachinescu emerged as the Day 1b and overall chip leader after bagging up massive 345,000. Strachinescu's biggest cash so far is a third place in the PokerFest Mamaia Season 3 €600 Main Event back in 2013 for a payday of €13,250.

Strachinescu is followed by fellow countryman Vladut Paun (326,500) and the two Dutchmen Tom Vogelsang (308,000) and Teun Herman (288,000), while other big stacks include Ionut Voinea (254,000), Avi Cohen (252,500), Yasen Dichev (248,000), Stephane Allard (243,000) and Alexander Ioan (239,000). Most of the Unibet Poker representatives took to the tables on Day 1b and three of them will be back tomorrow: Unibet Poker ambassador Dara O'Kearney made it through with 234,000, eSports Star Kevin "Papaplatte" Teller bagged up 130,000 and David Lappin will return with a stack of 90,000, which is just below the average.

Among those Unibet Poker representatives to join the rail throughout Day 1b were the eSports Stars Andrey "Reynad" Yanyuk, Sophia "Djarii" White, Fabien "Kioshima" Fiey, Thijs "Thijs" Molendijk, Fredrik "dbergie" Bergmann, Anssi "AndyPyro" Huovinen, Alan "Hotted89" Widmann and the ambassadors Rauno Tahvonen and Ian Simpson. Widmann was the first to fall when his pocket kings got cracked by the ace-king suited of Simeon Todorov, while White ran with king-ten suited and top pair on the flop in pocket aces. Simpson was caught bluffing and Tahvonen failed to hold up with pocket queens against a suited ace of Tom Vogelsang in the late stages of the day.

There were also several former Unibet Open champions in action today and all but Dan Murariu (51,500) were ousted. Mateusz Moolhuizen's nut flush draw and gutshot straight draw could not get there against two pair and defending Bucharest champion Traian Bostan never managed to run up a stack either. Kaarel Lepik and Peter Harkes busted in the last two levels of the night, while Dmitry Varlamov and Martin Soukup were also among the casualties. Further notables that busted today include Viliyan Petleshkov, Michael Magalashvili, Yngve Steen, Viliyan Petleshkov and €2,200 High Roller champion Olvedo Heinze.

The action resumes at 12 p.m. noon local time on Saturday, December 2nd 2017, with level 12 and blinds of 1,500/3,000 and a running ante of 500. A maximum of 11 levels of 60 minutes each or down to the nine-handed final table are scheduled for the penultimate day in Bucharest, whichever of the two comes first. A break every two levels and a dinner break after the end of the sixth level will see bagging and tagging take place at approximately 1 a.m. local time at the latest. As usual the PokerNews live reporting team will provide all the action from the floor and the live stream of the feature table on the Unibet Poker Twitch Channel commences in the third level of the day.

Tahvonen Busts to an "Easy Ace"

Level 10 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Rauno Tahvonen
Rauno Tahvonen

The seat of Rauno Tahvonen was occupied by another player and the Unibet Poker ambassador has been eliminated. According to other players at his table, Tahvonen raised and called the three-bet shove of Tom Vogelsang with pocket queens. Vogelsang only had {A-Hearts}{8-Hearts} but spiked an "easy ace" on the river.

That leaves Dara O'Kearney and David Lappin as only ambassadors flying the Unibet Poker flag, while eSports Star Kevin Teller also remains at Tahvonen's former table with an above-average stack.

Djarii Runs Into Aces

Level 9 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Sophia "Djarii" White
Sophia "Djarii" White

Sophia "Djarii" White was involved in a three-way flop of {K-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}{5-Hearts} and bet 6,500 out of the big blind. Bogdan Ionescu raised to 17,000 and, once the third player in the hand folded, White moved all in for 38,600, which Ionescu called with slightly more chips than the eSports Star.

Sophia White: {K-Hearts}{10-Hearts}
Bogdan Ionescu: {A-Spades}{A-Diamonds}

While the {Q-Hearts} turn took away some outs, it added a flush draw for White. However, the {9-Clubs} river was a blank and White headed to the rail.

Ioan Takes the Lead After Double Knockout

Level 9 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Dan Chisu
Dan Chisu

Short stack Alpar Soos moved all in for 13,700 from the cutoff and Alexander Ioan called on the button. Dan Chisu moved all in for 42,000 out of the big blind and Ioan snap-called.

Alpar Soos: {10-Clubs}{7-Hearts}
Dan Chisu: {10-Hearts}{10-Spades}
Alexander Ioan: {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}

Both Soos and Chisu knocked the table and said "nice hand" before the showdown even proceeded. There was a glimpse of hope, though, with a gutshot for both players at risk on the board {9-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{7-Spades}{3-Spades}, but Ioan's kings held up to score the double knockout.

O'Kearney Busts Petcu; Gicovanu Ousts Heinze

Level 9 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Dara O'Kearney
Dara O'Kearney

Within a few minutes and on different tables, €2,200 High Roller champion Olvedo Heinze was sent to the rail while Unibet Poker ambassador Dara O'Kearney earned a massive boost to his stack when busting Elvis Petcu.

Heinze was all in before the flop with {K-Clubs}{10-Clubs} and Marius Gicovanu called with the {7-Spades}{7-Clubs}. The {7-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{4-Spades} flop was quite deadly for Heinze and there was no runner runner miracle on the {2-Diamonds} turn and {A-Spades} river.

Petcu got his stack in with pocket jacks and O'Kearney had him dominated with the {Q-Hearts}{Q-Spades}. The board came {A-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{3-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}.

Ian Simpson
Ian Simpson

In a battle of the blinds, the board showed {9-Hearts}{7-Spades}{3-Hearts}{10-Hearts} and Samuiel Stan checked, then called a bet of 9,000 by Ian Simpson. The {3-Spades} river completed the board and Stan checked again. Simpson moved all in for 15,300 and the Romanian reluctantly called with {J-}{9-} to see Simpson turn over {K-Hearts}{5-Spades} for an airball, seat open for Unibet Poker ambassador.

Kevin "Papaplatte" Teller
Kevin "Papaplatte" Teller

On the turn of {10-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{5-Spades}, the above-average stacks of Vladimir Velikov and Kevin Teller collided and the former was at risk with pocket queens. Teller showed {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts} and the river was the blank {4-Spades}.

While Velikov took his belongings and left the seat, Teller asked the dealer "can I take it?" referring to the stack that formerly belonged to Velikov. That was confirmed and the eSports Star implemented the chips into his growing stack.

In a three-way all in it was former big stack Sorin Constantinescu who was the player at risk for his last 16,750 and the other two players involved were Robert Ionescu with {A-Clubs}{K-Clubs} and Joeri Moerman with {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}.

They both flopped top pair but it was no good, as Constantinescu's {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts} made a set on flop and a full house on the turn of the board {K-Hearts}{8-Spades}{6-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{Q-Spades}.

Widmann's Kings Get Cracked

Alan "Hotted89" Widmann
Alan "Hotted89" Widmann

Thijs Molendijk raised to 1,000 and Aan Widmann three-bet to 2,700, which the hijack called. Out of the small blind, Simeon Todorov squeezed to 13,500 and action folded back to Widmann, who moved all in for 17,000 in total. The hijack folded and Todorov called it off with the superior stack.

Alan Widmann: {K-Clubs}{K-Hearts}
Simeon Todorov: {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}

The {6-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} flop gave Todorov an additional flush draw and the {A-Hearts} fell on the turn. A blank {2-Spades} on the river was of no help and the Unibet Poker eSports Star was eliminated.

Kaarel Lepik called a raise by Tzipi Fraid to see a flop of {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} and Fraid continued for 1,500, Lepik called on the small blind and a third player in the hand folded. The remaing stack of Fraid then went into the middle after the {8-Clubs} turn and Lepik quickly looked her up with {J-Clubs}{10-Hearts} for a straight.

Fraid had {A-Spades}{A-Hearts} for top set and the {2-Spades} on the river was a blank to award the pot to the 2017 Unibet Open Copenhagen champion.
