USPO #05 – $10,000 No Limit Hold'em

Stacked Final Table of Event #5: $10,000 No Limit Hold'em Begins at 12:00 PM

2018 US Poker Open
2018 US Poker Open

Welcome back to the final day of Event #5: $10,000 No Limit Hold'em of the inaugural US Poker Open. After an 11 hour grind on Day 1, the final six players were finalized and what a lineup we have for you today.

Jake Schindler, a regular on the high-stakes tournament scene, comes into the day as the overwhelming chip leader. Schindler bagged an impressive 2,380,000 chips as he enters his second final table of the series. After finishing in fourth place in Event #3, the American poker pro will look to make better on his second attempt.

Following him is none other than 2013 WSOP Main Event champion, Ryan Riess with 1,375,000. Riess had a slow start to the series, failing to cash in the first two hold'em events, but looks to be in fine form heading into today. Ben Tollerene rounds out the top three with 1,265,000 chips and, like Schindler, is mostly known for competing in the nosebleed tournaments. Tollerene had a rough start to the tournament, finding himself in for the maximum amount of entries, but turned things around in the last few levels of the day.

Not only is the final table packed with highly-skilled players, but there are some unknowns as well. Everyone knows Cary Katz, founder of Poker Central, who comes into the day with 490,000 chips, but how will he match up against some of the world-class players. Well, Katz is coming off a win in the $100,000 Super High Roller at the 2018 PCA for just under $1.5 million so there should be no issue there.

Rodger Johnson, the short stack at the table with just 350,000, is a Vegas locale who can be mostly found playing tournaments in the $1,000 buy-in range. However, Johnson took a shot to play with some of the high rollers this week and it appears to be paying off as he has demonstrated all of the skills needed to crack the top six.

The final question mark would be the lone female to enter the tournament, Kristina Holst. When the action got underway on Day 1, Holst was ready to duke it out with her male counterparts and she showed no fear whatsoever. Holst has proven she is not shy to three-bet, four-bet, and put her opponents to the test with the best of them. Over the course of her career, the native of California has taken some shots at the $5,000 and $10,000 tournament range but has yet to find much success with her largest cash being around $44,000. Maybe this is the moment Holst has been waiting for.

The players will receive a fresh set of three 60-second time extensions at the start of play. The final six players are all guaranteed to at least pocket $40,200 but will be in search of the top prize of $187,600. Here is a look at the payouts thus far:

Although the winner won't have much impact on the overall standings, they will be able to set themselves up for a big push down the final stretch. With just three tournaments remaining to be played, there is still a lot of money up for grabs. Everyone is currently chasing money leader, Stephen Chidwick, who has racked up over $810,000 in the first half of the series. Chidwick has made three final tables and won two of the opening $25,000 events. Here is a look at the leaderboard.

If you are looking to keep an eye on the final table, you can catch all of the action on a 30-minute delay on PokerGO. The live-stream will be taking place throughout the entire final table with the hole cards being shown. The action will begin at 1:00 P.M. PST and continue until a winner is crowned.

Level: 18

Blinds: 10,000/20,000

Ante: 20,000

Hands #1-5: Tollerene Barrels With Flush, Holst Escapes on the River

Level 18 : 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante

Hand #1: Cary Katz found {K-Hearts}{Q-Clubs} in the second position and scooped the blinds and ante with a 50,000-raise to kick things off.

Hand #2: It took only two hands to see the first three-bet hit the felt. It all happened in the late positions after Kristina Holst made it 45,000 in the cutoff. Jake Schindler peeled {A-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} on the button and priced it up to 130,000. Holst folded her {K-Hearts}{10-Spades}.

Hand #3: Ryan Riess min-raised from the button and Katz defended his big blind with {J-Spades}{3-Spades}. Katz completely missed the {8-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{K-Clubs} flop and quickly check-folded to Riess' continuation bet.

Hand #4: Under the gun, Holst raised to 45,000 with {A-Clubs}{J-Spades} and action folded to big blind Ben Tollerene who called with dominated {A-Spades}{8-Clubs}. Once again, the {K-Spades}{7-Clubs}{2-Hearts} flop wasn't what the defending player wished for and Tollerene check-folded to Holst's cbet of 50,000.

Hand #5: In a blind-versus-blind limped pot, Tollerene and Holst looked at the {9-Hearts}{7-Spades}{A-Hearts} flop. It was an action-provoking texture as Tollerene had a combo draw with {10-Hearts}{6-Hearts} while Holst spiked the top pair with {A-Clubs}{2-Clubs}. Tollerene led out 30,000 and Holst called.

The {3-Hearts} turn locked it up for Tollerene who made his flush. He continued barreling, firing 80,000 this time. Holst called one more time and the {9-Clubs} river paired the board.

Tollerene took his full 30 seconds before betting 250,000, putting Holst to a tough spot. She laid her hand down, preventing her stack from what would be a huge wound.

Hands #6-10: Katz Puts Riess to the Test

Level 18 : 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante

Hand #6: Cary Katz opened to 45,000 from the cutoff with {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds} but could not pick up any customers.

Hand #7: Ben Tollerene looked down at the {a-Clubs}{j-Spades} in the cutoff and raised it up to 45,000. Ryan Riess defended his big blind with {k-Spades}{j-Clubs} and the flop came {9-Spades}{7-Clubs}{6-Hearts}. Riess checked to Tollerene who continued for 45,000 and Riess quickly folded.

Hand #8: Riess raised to 45,000 on the button with {a-Clubs}{2-Hearts} and picked up the blinds and ante.

Hand #9: Jake Schindler opened to 45,000 in the cutoff with {a-Hearts}{j-Spades} and Riess flat-called on the button with {3-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}. Katz also came along with {8-Hearts}{8-Clubs} in the big blind and the flop came {8-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{2-Spades}. The action checked around to Riess who fired 60,000. Katz called with his top set while Schindler let his hand go. The {k-Spades} hit the turn and Katz checked again, allowing Riess to bet another 165,000. Katz check-raised all in for 390,000 and Riess burned up a time extension before letting his hand go.

Ante: 25,000

Hands #10-14: Katz Keeps Rising

Level 19 : 10,000/25,000, 25,000 ante

Hand #10: Cary Katz seized the momentum early on. After winning a huge pot with pocket eights, Katz looked down at {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs} in the small blind. He was facing an open-raise to 60,000 from hijack Jake Schindler who had {6-Hearts}{5-Hearts}. Katz three-bet to 200,000 but Schindler wasn't interested in fighting.

Hand #11: Ryan Riess picked up {3-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} for the second time in a short span and he raised to 55,000 from the hijack. Kristina Holst called from the big blind with {A-Spades}{9-Diamonds} and she flopped the nut-flush draw on {J-Spades}{7-Spades}{4-Spades}.

Riess, however, checked behind and he was rewarded with a {3-Clubs} turn card. He fired a delayed c-bet and Holst paid the 75,000 to see the {Q-Clubs} river miss her draw. She checked for the final time and Riess ended the hand with a bet of 155,000.

Hand #12: Riess opened to 60,000 with {A-Clubs}{4-Clubs} and button Katz opted for a loose flat with {8-Spades}{6-Spades}. Both blinds folded, leaving Riess and Katz in a heads-up pot on the {K-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{7-Hearts} flop. Riess checked to Katz who bet 75,000 in position to take it down.

Hand #13: Schindler was in the small blind and he opened to 80,000 with {K-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}. Riess had a queen-eight and decided to let it go.

Hand #14: Ben Tollerene took the blinds and ante after raising to 55,000 from the hijack, holding {K-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}.

Rodger Johnson Eliminated in 6th Place ($40,200)

Rodger Johnson
Rodger Johnson

Hand #15: Jake Schindler opened to 60,000 from the cutoff with {10-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} and Rodger Johnson found a spot to get involved holding {a-Clubs}{4-Clubs}. Johnson shipped all in for 200,000 but Cary Katz woke up in the big blind with {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds}. Katz asked for a count and then made the call while Schindler quickly folded.

The flop came {j-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{2-Clubs} and Johnson would need some help in order to stay alive. The turn brought the {6-Hearts} and Johnson was left drawing to a four. The {k-Clubs} landed on the river and Johnson became the first player eliminated at the final table.

Kristina Holst Eliminated in 5th Place ($53,600)

Level 19 : 10,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
Kristina Holst
Kristina Holst

Hand #16: Cary Katz limped in from the small blind with {5-Spades}{4-Spades} and Ben Tollerene checked his {Q-Diamonds}{8-Spades}. They checked the {K-Spades}{9-Clubs}{Q-Clubs} flop as well as the {7-Clubs} turn before Katz led out 25,000 on the {2-Spades} river, firing a last-minute bluff. Tollerene, however, raised to 80,000 to force a fold from Katz.

Hand #17: Katz found spades again, raising the button to 50,000 with {Q-Spades}{4-Spades}. He wouldn't have any success as Tollerene three-bet out of the small blind, making it 225,000 with {K-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}.

Hand #18: Tollerene raised to 60,000 from the button and Kristina Holst looked down at a small pair in the small blind. She shoved for 495,000 and Tollerene double-checked his hand before calling with a monster.

Holst: {3-Spades}{3-Diamonds}
Tollerene: {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds}

Unfortunately for Holst, the {J-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} board hit Tollerene's Big Slick on the turn and that was the end for the lone female player in the tournament. Holst collected $53,600 for the fifth place, the biggest prize of her career.

Hands #19-21: Some Action Flops Level the Stacks

Level 19 : 10,000/25,000, 25,000 ante

Hand #19: Ben Tollerene raised to 60,000 on the button with {10-Spades}{10-Clubs} and Jake Schindler called from the small blind with {q-Clubs}{j-Hearts}. Ryan Riess also tagged along from the big blind with {10-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}. The action flop of {q-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{9-Spades} hit the felt and all three players had a bit of everything.

Both Schindler and Riess checked to Tollerene who continued for 65,000. Schindler just called with his top two pair and Riess check-raised to 245,000 after flopping a straight. Tollerene called with his straight draw along with Schindler.

The turn brought the {4-Clubs} and Schindler played it cautiously with another check. Riess shoved all in for 820,000 which forced a quick fold from Tollerene. Schindler sat with a puzzled look on his face as he tossed in a time extension and eventually decided on the correct fold.

Hand #20: Schindler opened to 60,000 on the button with {a-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} and both of the blinds folded.

Hand #21: Riess raised it up to 60,000 on the button with {8-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} and Cary Katz called from the small blind with {9-Clubs}{6-Clubs}. Tollerene was getting a good price in the big blind and also called with {8-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}. Another action flop of {10-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} was fanned and the action checked around to the {9-Hearts} on the turn. Katz led out for 75,000 with his trip nines and Tollerene folded. Riess made the call and the {a-Hearts} completed the board. Katz checked this time and Riess checked behind, sending the pot to Katz.
