Big Names Looking for Another Shot on Day 1b

WinStar World Casino
WinStar World Casino

In what was a successful turnout for Day 1a that saw 378 entries take part in the $2,500 WinStar River Poker Series Main Event, organizers are expecting an even busier Sunday for Day 1b. With a $2,000,000 guaranteed prizepool up for grabs, there will be many big names returning to the felt today after a poor showing on opening day.

The poker gods got the best of the poker superstars that showed up to the WinStar World Casino, the largest casino in the world, for Day 1a. The likes of Rainer Kempe, Allen Kessler, Marvin Rettenmaier, Mike Wang, David Pham, Ben Zamani, and River Poker Series ambassador Maria Ho all fired at least one bullet but to no avail. They will surely be back in their seats today looking for their shot at the top prize.

The action is slated to get started at 12:00 noon again with each player starting with a stack of 25,000 chips. The blinds will begin at 50/100 and will be increased every 40-minutes. That will change for Day 2 and 3 where the blind levels will be increased to 60-minutes in length. There will be a 15-minute break after every three levels and a 60-minute dinner break after level nine.

Late registration will remain open until after the dinner break which will be at approximately 7:30 pm. An unlimited number of re-entries will be permitted within the late registration time period. The field will once again play down to 12% before bagging and returning on Monday for Day 2. The final table will commence on Tuesday for Day 3 and play down to a winner.

Quads for Kempe

Rainer Kempe
Rainer Kempe

Three players were still active in the hand with the board reading {4-Hearts}{3-Spades}{2-Clubs}{3-Clubs}. The action checked to Rainer Kempe in the cutoff who bet 2,600. Kelli Shields called from early position and John Reading also came along.

The river was the {k-Diamonds} and Shield led out for 6,000. Reading thought for a minute and then ditched his cards. Kempe shoved all in and Shields quickly called off her remaining chips. Kempe turned over {3-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} for quad threes while Shields showed {2-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} for a full house. Kempe barely had Shields covered, eliminating her and doubling his stack in the meantime.

Green Gets a Full Double Up

Level 6 : 250/500, 75 ante
Brian Green
Brian Green

Brian Green opened to 1,600 from middle position and the big blind defended. The flop fell {j-Spades}{5-Clubs}{3-Clubs} and the big blind check-called a continuation bet of 3,000 from Green.

The turn was the {2-Clubs} and the big blind checked again. Green fired in another 7,200 and his opponent stuck around to see the {2-Spades} on the river. He checked for the third time and Green quickly shoved all in for 9,350. His opponent asked for a count and then eventually looked him up. Green flipped over {9-Clubs}{7-Clubs} for a flush and received a full double up.

Kessler Can't Win the Flip

Level 7 : 300/600, 100 ante
Allen Kessler
Allen Kessler

Allen Kessler got his stack of about 28,000 in preflop with {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts} and was racing against an opponent holding {q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}. The {4-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{5-Clubs} flop gave Kessler some extra outs but killed some that he started with. The {4-Spades} turn didn't help him, and the {k-Clubs} river did pair him but made a flush for his opponent.

"Chainsaw" headed for the registration desk and reentered.

Carroll Takes Heaps from Spinella

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Jim Carroll
Jim Carroll

Jim Carroll opened in middle position and called a three-bet to 6,000 from Anthony Spinella. The flop came {k-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} and Carroll came out firing with 6,000. Spinella called. Carroll bet big with 20,000 on the {9-Clubs} turn and Spinella again called. On the {2-Clubs} river, Carroll shoved for about 42,000 and Spinella was in there with a fairly quick call.

Carroll showed {k-Spades}{4-Spades} for flopped two pair and Spinella had his {a-}{a-} cracked.

Elpayaa On Heaps After Double Knockout

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 200 ante
Joe Elpayaa
Joe Elpayaa

Two players were already all in when we got to Joe Elpayaa's table, with Elpayaa in the cutoff and a middle-position player still live in the pot. The main pot contained about 25,000, a side pot for the other all-in player contained just a few thousand, and there was another side pot between Elpayaa and the middle player for about 10,000 more.

On the {5-Spades}{4-Hearts}{7-Clubs} flop, the middle player check-called 9,500. On the {8-Spades} turn, Elpayaa set him in for about 30,000 and the player thought briefly and folded.

Elpayaa showed {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs} and had everyone dead to a chop as one player had {q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} and the other {q-Clubs}{j-Clubs}. The river was the {3-Hearts} and Elpayaa took the whole pot.

Keeline Slow Plays Aces

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Ben Keeline
Ben Keeline

Anthony Spinella raised it up to 2,500 from middle position and Ben Keeline just called directly to his left. That invited three more players to join the action including both of the blinds.

The dealer spread the flop of {5-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} and the action checked around to the {7-Clubs} as Spinella had a laugh about the lack of respect he was given preflop. The small blind chose to lead out for 4,100 and Keeline was the only player to call.

The river brought the {6-Spades} and the small blind checked this time. Keeline tossed in a bet of 6,500 and his opponent paid him off. Keeline tabled {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds} and his opponent sent his cards to the muck.

Cervantes Binks River, Denies Minkin 450K Stack

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Kelly Minkin (L) and Kevin Eyster
Kelly Minkin (L) and Kevin Eyster

A massive pot of 140,000 was built up between three players after a {3-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} flop. A player on the button was already all in and small blind Salvador Cervantes and big blind Kelly Minkin were left contesting the pot. On the {j-Hearts} turn, Cervantes jammed for 84,000. Minkin got a count, tanked a little over a minute, and called.

Kelly Minkin: {10-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}
Salvador Cervantes: {j-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}
Third player: {5-Spades}{3-Spades}

Minkin was in command with so many pairing cards dead, and she mainly needed to fade a diamond. She did so, but the {j-Clubs} on the river gave Cervantes jacks full for the whole pot.

The Master Coolers Two

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Men Nguyen
Men Nguyen

We arrived at the table to see three players all in on one side of the table before any community cards were dealt. Men "The Master" Nguyen had both players covered and also held the best hand.

Men Nguyen: {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}
Chris Staats: {q-Spades}{q-Clubs}
Small Blind: {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}

There was a king on the flop but Nguyen still held a commanding lead with his pair of aces. The turn and river bricked off and Nguyen scooped a massive pot while knocking out two players.
