WinStar World Casino
WinStar World Casino

After a Day 1a flight that saw 293 entrants hit the felt, a bigger field is expected for today's Day 1b flight at the 2019 WinStar River Poker Series $1,500 Main Event. With a $1,500,000 Guarantee attached to this event, plenty of new and familiar faces are expected to hit the felt in hopes of joining the 36 players that bagged up yesterday.

Although a few big names, such as WinStar Ambassador Maria Ho, Spencer Champlin, and Shawn Rice were able to secure a seat at Day 2, others, such as Ben Keeline, Kelly Minkin, and Ray Henson, are expected to return today for another chance at advancing, including some new faces such as Shomari Williams, who arrived late last night and will be in action today.

The remaining two flights of the WinStar Labor Day River Series Main Event kick off at Noon local time. Along with today's Day 1b flight, one more flight is available for players on Day 1c, which takes place on Sunday, August 31st. All players that manage to find a bag will reconvene on Monday, September 1st at Noon to play down to the final table. A winner will be crowned on Day 3, which takes place Tuesday, September 2nd.

Players will begin with 25,000 in starting chips, and the blinds will kick off at 100/100. On the three Day 1 flights, action will consist of 40-minute levels until the field has been reduced down to 12%. There will be a fifteen-minute break every three levels, and a 45-minute dinner break is scheduled after the completion of Level 9. Players may re-enter as many times as they wish until the end of registration after the dinner break. Play is scheduled to conclude once the field is reduced down to 12% in each of the starting flights.

Stay tuned right here to the PokerNews Live Reporting blog as we follow all the action from Day 1b all the way down to a winner here at the WinStar Labor Day River Series Main Event!

Welcome To the Table, Phil Mader!

Level 1 : 100/100, 0 ante
Phil Mader, pictured at another event
Phil Mader, pictured at another event

Phil Mader had just taken his seat and been dealt into his first hand of action, finding himself in the big blind. He had a raise of 4,000 out with action on the player on the button, who had 1,200 out in front of himself already and called Mader's reraise. The small blind also had 1,200 committed, which was all he would put into the pot as he mucked to let Mader and his opponent duke it out postflop.

The flop fell {8-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} and Mader threw out a continuation-bet of 3,000. His opponent called. Mader fired another 7,000 on the turn {5-Diamonds} and was called again.

The river came {3-Spades} and Mader announced he was all in, putting his last 10,500 out afterward His opponent went into the tank, thinking about his decision for two minutes, before announcing a fold. He then looked back at his cards as if he did not want to let go of them, ultimately sending them to the muck as the dealer sent the pot to Mader.

Wang Puts Minkin To the Test

Level 2 : 100/100, 100 ante
Michael Wang
Michael Wang

After being seated at the same table for yesterday's Day 1a, Michael Wang and Kelly Minkin have found themselves as tablemates yet again early on Day 1b. After playing several hands with one another yesterday, two wasted no time getting into a pot together this afternoon as well.

There was 2,500 in the pot on a flop of {7-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{k-Spades} and Minkin checked in early position to Wang, who was on her left. Wang bet 1,500 and Minkin called. The turn came {3-Hearts} and MInkin check-called another 3,600 from Wang.

The river fell {q-Hearts} and Minkin checked once more. Wang announced he was all in, shoving his last 14,000 forward to effectively put Minkin all in for her last 8,400. Minkin thought about her decision for about 20 seconds and pushed her cards forward to the muck.

Onimole Gets Three Streets

Level 4 : 200/300, 300 ante
Babatunde Onimole
Babatunde Onimole

The player on the button saw action folded to him and limped in. The small blind then completed and Babatunde Onimole checked his option. The three saw a flop of {q-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{7-Hearts} and the small blind checked. Onimole bet 800, getting a fold from the player on the button and a call from the small blind.

With action heads up, the turn came {9-Clubs}. The small blind checked and then called another bet of 1,600 from Onimole. The dealer then burned and turned the river {a-Diamonds} and the small blind checked to Onimole once more. He tossed out two yellow T1,000 chips and was quickly called.

Onimole tabled {a-Clubs}{7-Spades} for aces up and his opponent mucked, resulting in the pot being sent his way.

Sharpe Re-Enters, Immediately Doubles

Level 5 : 200/400, 400 ante
Justin Sharpe
Justin Sharpe

Justin Sharpe came by the PokerNews Live Reporting desk to share how his fortunes had shifted since re-entering the tournament after he busted earlier.

Four players limped in to see a {j-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{8-Clubs} flop together, and action checked to a middle position player, who bet 2,000. Sharpe called, as did the button, before the big blind check-raised to 12,000. The middle position player folded, but Sharpe three-bet shoved for 25,000. The button folded and the big blind called.

Justin Sharpe: {6-Clubs}{4-Clubs}
Opponent: {10-Clubs}{4-}

Sharpe's opponent held a higher flush draw against Sharpe's made flush, but two bricks on the turn and river gave Sharpe an instant double for his second bullet.

Kelly Scores Another Knockout With Aces

Level 6 : 300/600, 600 ante
Eric Kelly
Eric Kelly

Eric Kelly opened to 1,600 and was three-bet by the cutoff to 4,200. Stacey Jones was in the big blind and called, putting action back on Kelly. Kelly four-bet to 17,000 and the cutoff went all in. Jones folded and Kelly called.

Eric Kelly: {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades}
Cutoff: {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}

The board ran out {4-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}, giving Kelly a small sweat when the king came on the turn en route to winning the pot. His stack was totaled to be 52,700 after the hand, whereas his opponent's was 48,500. The entire pot was sent Kelly's way and the newly-eliminated player made his way out of the tournament area.

Onimole Bricks a Huge Draw Against Sample

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Babatunde Onimole
Babatunde Onimole

Babatunde Onimole got his last 12,000 in on a {9-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} flop from middle position, and Darryl Sample had him at risk with a call from the button.

Babatunde Onimole: {a-Hearts}{j-Hearts}
Darryl Sample: {a-Clubs}{q-Clubs}

Sample needed to fade the straight and flush draw of Onimole to knockout the early Day 1b chip leader, and the {a-Diamonds} turn and {3-Spades} river were safe for Sample's ace-queen to secure the bustout.

Dalka's Kings Get Cracked

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Matt Dalka
Matt Dalka

A player raised to 2,000 from under the gun, and Matt Dalka three-bet to 4,500 from middle position. Dalka's opponent called.

The under-the-gun player bet 5,000 after the {2-Hearts}{3-Spades}{q-Diamonds} flop fell, and Dalka placed a stack of 5k chips in the pot and said, "All in."

"All in? All right," the under-the-gun player said before pushing his last 17,500 in the pot.

Opponent: {q-Hearts}{9-Hearts}
Matt Dalka: {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}

Dalka's kings looked primed for a double, but the {7-Hearts} turn added a flush draw to his opponent's outs, and the {q-Spades} gave the under-the-gun player trip queens and the winner.

Last year's 2018 WinStar Labor Day Poker Series $2,500 Main Event champ William Pengelly was recently spotted building a stack of six figures up, hoping to replicate his success from last year.

In last year's event, Pengelly topped a field of 807 entries and earned a $249,310 payday after a five-way chop, and the now twenty-one year old already has a cash in this year's series, finishing in 30th in Event #1: $500 No Limit Hold'em for $1,801. Can he make it back-to-back and go the distance here again in this year's $1,500 Main Event? We'll be keeping an eye out for him as we cross the halfway point in today's Day 1b.
