Sam Higgs Wins 2014 WSOP APAC Event #5 $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha for AU$127,843

Level 19 : 4,000/8,000, 0 ante

With the conclusion of Event #5 the 2014 World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific is officially halfway over. Two days ago the $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha tournament attracted 80 players that created a prize pool of AU$376,000, but today just six of them returned to the Crown Casino to play down to a winner. It’d take just three hours and 110 hands for Melbourne local and tattoo shop owner Sam Higgs, who began the day as a massive chip leader, to walk away with the AU$127,843 first-place prize.

Things got off to a quick start when, on just the third hand of the day, action folded to Mike Watson in the small blind and he raised to 12,000. German pro Ismael Bojang responded by three-betting the size of the pot, Watson four-bet, and Bojang got all in for roughly 55,000 total.

Watson: {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{a-Hearts}{9-Spades}
Bojang: {a-Spades}{10-Spades}{k-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}

The {9-Hearts}{6-Spades}{4-Clubs} flop was dry as could be for Bojang, but the {7-Spades} turn gave him both straight and flush draws. Unfortunately for Bojang, he'd miss as the {4-Diamonds} bricked on the river. Bojang exited in sixth place for AU$21,123, which marked his 11th WSOP in 2014.

On Hand #39 of the final table, a short-stacked Jeff Rossiter got his chips all in holding {j-Hearts}{j-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{4-Spades} only to run into the {k-Clubs}{k-Spades}{10-Hearts}{9-Spades} of Watson. The board ran out clean and Rossiter had to settle for fifth place and AU$27,011 in prize money.

The next to go was Day 1 chip leader Jamie Pickering, who fell on Hand #44 when he got his remaining chips all in on the turn with kings only to run into the nut-flush of Higgs, and he was followed out the door by 2010 WSOP Main Event champ Jonathan Duhamel, who got his stack all in preflop holding the {7-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{2-Spades} and failed to outdraw the {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{6-Hearts} of Higgs.

Higgs began heads-up play with a slight chip lead, but within three hands Watson took it over. Not to be deterred, Higgs retook the lead and then set about slowly whittling away at his opponent. After 55 hands of heads-up play, which was Hand #110 of the final table, Higgs limped from the button and then called when Watson, who by this time was at a 5-1 chip disadvantage, raised to 24,000. The {5-Clubs}{j-Spades}{q-Clubs} flop saw Higgs call a bet of 48,000, and then Watson moved all in for his last 87,000 on the {4-Diamonds} turn. Higgs thought for a while before dropping in a call and saying "gamble."

Higgs: {4-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}
Watson: {k-Clubs}{k-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}

Watson was ahead with kings and an open-ended straight draw, while Higgs was drawing to a flush and a straight draw of his own.

"More outs than I thought," Higgs said optimistically. The dealer then burned and put out the {10-Spades}. Higgs hit his straight, and for the third time in his career Watson had to settle for a runner-up finish is a WSOP event.

Higgs, who won a PLO event back in January at the Aussie Millions, captured his first WSOP gold bracelet and the AU$127,843 first-place prize.

PlacePlayerPrize (AU$)
1Sam Higgs$127,843
2Mike Watson$79,099
3Jonathan Duhamel$52,068
4Jamie Pickering$36,449
5Jeff Rossiter$27,011
6Ismael Bojang$21,123

That does it for our coverage from Event #5: $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha, but the PokerNews Live Reporting Team is still hard at work covering both Event #6: $1,650 8-Game Dealer’s Choice and Event #7: $2,200 Six-Max No-Limit Hold’em, so be sure to follow those for more WSOP APAC action.

Mike Watson Eliminated in 2nd Place (AU$79,099)

Level 19 : 4,000/8,000, 0 ante
Mike Watson - 2nd Place
Mike Watson - 2nd Place

Hand #109: Mike Watson limped the button and then called when Sam Higgs raised to 24,000. Both players checked the {j-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{6-Hearts} flop as well as the {A-Spades} turn, and then action repeated itself on the {4-Spades} river. Higgs showed kings with the {k-Clubs}{k-Spades}{9-Spades}{2-Hearts} and Watson mucked.

Hand #110: In what would be the final hand of the tournament, Higgs limped from the button and then called when Watson raised to 24,000. The {5-Clubs}{j-Spades}{q-Clubs} flop saw Higgs call a bet of 48,000, and then Watson moved all in for his last 87,000 on the {4-Diamonds} turn. Higgs thought for awhile before dropping in a call and saying "gamble."

Higgs: {4-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}

"More outs than I thought," Higgs said optimistically. The dealer then burned and put out the {10-Spades}. Higgs hit his straight, and for the third time Watson had to settle for a runner-up finish is a WSOP event.

Jonathan Duhamel Eliminated in 3rd Place (AU$ 52,068)

Level 17 : 2,500/5,000, 0 ante
Jonathan Duhamel - 3rd Place
Jonathan Duhamel - 3rd Place

Hand #53: Mike Watson got a walk in the big blind.

Hand #54: After a preflop raising war, Jonathan Duhamel got his last 45,000 chips in preflop and was called by initial raiser Sam Higgs.

Higgs: {A-Spades} {K-Clubs} {K-Hearts} {6-Hearts}
Duhamel: {7-Clubs} {5-Clubs} {4-Hearts} {2-Spades}

The former World Series Of Poker Main Event champion was looking for low cards in order to avoid elimination but the {8-Hearts} {8-Spades} {Q-Hearts} flop was pretty much the exact opposite. Duhamel was drawing dead after the {10-Hearts} turn and the meaningless {6-Diamonds} river completed the board.

Jamie Pickering Eliminated in 4th Place (AU$ 36,449)

Level 17 : 2,500/5,000, 0 ante
Jamie Pickering - 4th Place
Jamie Pickering - 4th Place

Hand #40: Mike Watson raised to 12,500 from the button and folded to the three-bet of Jonathan Duhamel out of the big blind to 40,000.

Hand #41: Jamie Pickering received a walk in the big blind.

Hand #42: Pickering limped from the small blind and bet 8,500 on the {5-Hearts} {4-Clubs} {J-Spades} flop. Watson called and they checked the {5-Clubs} on the turn. On the {J-Clubs} river, Pickering checked and Watson grabbed some chips, making it 20,000 to go. Pickering reluctantly called and then mucked when he was shown the {A-Clubs} {2-Clubs} {3-Diamonds} {9-Hearts} by Watson.

Hand #43: Watson raised from the button and received the blinds.

Hand #44: Watson raised to 12,500 and all three opponents called to see the flop of {4-Diamonds} {7-Hearts} {6-Hearts}. Higgs bet 20,000 and Duhamel folded, Pickering moved all in for 23,000. Both Watson and Higgs called that and the {5-Hearts} appeared on the turn. Watson checked to Higgs and got out of the way once the chip leader bet 80,000.

Pickering: {K-Diamonds} {K-Clubs} {6-Diamonds} {2-Spades}
Higgs: {A-Hearts} {K-Hearts} {K-Spades} {7-Clubs}

Pickering was already drawing dead and shook hands with everyone before the {Q-Hearts} fell on the river. The Australian receives AU$ 36,449 for his efforts and we are down to the last three players.

Jeff Rossiter Eliminated in 5th Place (AU$27,011)

Level 17 : 2,500/5,000, 0 ante
Jeff Rossiter - 5th Place
Jeff Rossiter - 5th Place

Hand #36: Mike Watson raised to 12,500 from the cutoff and Jonathan Duhamel defended from the big blind, which brought about a flop of {q-Spades}{a-Spades}{2-Hearts}. Watson then called a bet of 20,000 from Duhamel on the {Q-Hearts} turn before both players returned to checking on the {3-Clubs} river. Duhamel showed the {7-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{8-Hearts}, but it was no good as Watson held the {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{4-Hearts}.

Hand #37: Watson opened for 12,500 under the gun and took down the blinds.

Hand #38: Duhamel raised to 17,500 from the button, Watson called from the big blind, and the flop fell {j-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}. Watson led out for 40,000 and then called when Duhamel moved all in for just 3,500 more.

Watson: {7-Clubs}{9-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}
Duhamel: {q-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}

Both players had flopped a straight, but Duhamel's was best. Neither the {A-Clubs} turn nor {5-Clubs} river changed a thing and Duhamel scored the double.

Hand #39: Jeff Rossiter got his last 45,000 all in preflop and found himself trailing behind Watson.

Rossiter: {j-Hearts}{j-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{4-Spades}
Watson: {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{9-Spades}

The {a-Hearts}{7-Spades}{9-Clubs} flop did little for Rossiter, and the {K-Diamonds} turn actually left him drawing dead as Watson spiked a set. The meaningless {4-Diamonds} was run out on the river for good measure, and then Rossiter took his leave in fifth place for AU$27,011.

Ismael Bojang Eliminated in 6th Place (AU$21,123)

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 0 ante
Ismael Bojang - 6th Place
Ismael Bojang - 6th Place

Hand #1: Sam Higgs opened for 10,000 from the cutoff and Jonathan Duhamel called from the small blind. The flop came down {9-Clubs}{2-Spades}{4-Hearts} and Duhamel check-folded to a bet of 15,000.

Hand #2: Ismael Bojang limped under the gun, Jamie Pickering did the same from the small blind, and Mike Watson checked his option from the big. Two checks on the {q-Clubs}{j-Spades}{5-Clubs} flop saw Bojang bet 8,500, and it did the trick as both Pickering and Watson folded.

Hand #3: Action folded to Watson in the small blind and he raised to 12,000. Bojang responded by three-betting the size of the pot, Watson four-bet, and Bojang got all in for roughly 55,000 total.

Watson: {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{a-Hearts}{9-Spades}
Bojang: {a-Spades}{10-Spades}{k-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}

The {9-Hearts}{6-Spades}{4-Clubs} flop was dry as could be for Bojang, but the {7-Spades} turn gave him both straight and flush draws. Unfortunately for the German, he'd miss as the {4-Diamonds} bricked on the river. Bojang exited in sixth place and takes home AU$21,123 for his performance. This marked Bojang's 11th cash in the WSOP for 2014.

Can Higgs Use His Big Chip Advantage to Play His Way to a WSOP Bracelet?

Sam Higgs
Sam Higgs

Four events are in the books here at the 2014 World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific, and by the end of the night it'll be five as Event #5 $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha, a tournament that attracted 80 players and created a prize pool of AU$376,000, looks to play down from the final six to a champion.

The man best positioned to capture the AU$127,843 first-place is Sam Higgs, who holds a 4-1 chip lead over his nearest competitor. Higgs had an up-and-down day on Day 2, but obviously he ended it on a high note.

Even with a big chip lead, Higgs won't have it easy. Standing in his way is an accomplished table of pros including 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event champ Jonathan Duhamel, who begins the day second in chips. Duhamel looks to equal Joe Cada's feat this past summer by becoming just the second former Main Event champ to win another bracelet since Carlos Mortensen.

Also still in contention is Mike Watson, who made a miraculous comeback on Day 2. He was crippled by Brian Roberts and left with just 1,500 in chips at the 1,000/2,000 blind level. Some fortuitous doubles saw him work that stack back up, and now he begins the third and final day third in chips. German pro Ismael Bojang; Australian superstar Jeff Rossiter; and Day 1 chip leader Jamie Pickering round out the final table of six, which was established last night after Richard Johnston (8th – AU$15,021) and Kahle Burns (7th – AU$17,386) hit the rail.

Here’s a look at today's final table:

SeatPlayerCount
1Mike Watson145,000
2Ismael Bojang44,000
3Sam Higgs667,000
4Jeff Rossiter63,500
5Jonathan Duhamel153,000
6Jamie Pickering99,500

Cards will be in the air at 12:10 p.m. local time, which is about an hour from now. Of course the PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be on hand to capture all the action from the Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia, so stay tuned.
