Bring on Day 2

Good morning from the beautiful Merit Crystal Cove Hotel and Casino in northern Cyprus. The weather outside is a bit cooler today than it's been in recent days, but not enough to deter many of the assembled players from a quick morning stop at the beach for a swim in the Mediterranean Sea.

We had 181 runners over the two Day 1 flights of this $10,000 poker tournament. 125 of them will be rejoining us today to continue the inexorable march towards the final table. Here's how the top four stacks shape up:

John Tabatabai - 178,275
Phil Gordon - 157,400
Jan Skampa - 156,975
Ludovic Lacay - 140,700

These four players are well ahead of the field, which brings an average stack of about 58,000 into play today.

The action this morning will start with a color-up and race-off of the T25 black chips. Once that's completed cards will be in the air, probably in about thirty minutes, just after noon local time. See you then.

Rep Picks Up Where He Left Off

Rep Porter
Rep Porter
Rep Porter brought a slightly larger than average chip stack into Day 2 and he's already hard at work increasing it. Porter was one of two players to call Dany Joe Georges' preflop raise to 2,100. On a flop of {9-Clubs} {3-Clubs} {9-Hearts} Porter, in position, was the only player to call Georges' 4,500-chip bet. The turn came {7-Spades}. George had to act first and chose to fire another 6,000 chips into the pot. Porter quickly raised to 17,500, a raise that induced a fold after a minute of thought from Georges.

Kyrcacos Kyrcacou Doubles Through Kelly Kim

Local Cypriot Kyrcacos Kyrcacou got off on the right foot to start the day after doubling through Full Tilter Kelly Kim.

The two got it all in preflop -- Kim with pocket nines and Kyrcacou with pocket queens. The board then ran out {A-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{7-Hearts} and Kyrcacou's queens reigned supreme, kicking him up to 25,000 in chips.

Kim fell to 57,000 in the loss.

Kerzhapkin Snapped Off

Yury Kerzhapkin made a play on the river but it didn't pay off. In a battle of the blinds, he opened to 2,000, then called the big blind's re-raise to 4,500. Both players checked the {5-Hearts} {3-Diamonds} {A-Spades} flop and the {A-Clubs} turn. The river was the {J-Clubs}. Kerzhapkin made a 10,000-chip stab at the pot. He snap-folded to a considered raise to 25,000 chips total.

That's a Bummer...

Nakano stacking Ummer's chips
Nakano stacking Ummer's chips
Yosh Nakano has just doubled up through Per Ummer, leaving the resident Cypriot crippled with just under 3,000 in chips.

The money found the middle preflop; Nakano's with pocket queens and Ummer's with two black tens. The board ran out nine-high and Nakano's queens would take the pot, kicking him up to 35,000 in chips.

Jan Skampa Busto

Jan Skampa - busto

Wow. So much for coming into Day 2 as one of the chip leaders. Jan Skampa has been sent to the rail not even thirty minutes into the day, despite starting the day with more than 185 big blinds. The final hand for Skampa came on a board of {5-Spades} {2-Spades} {Q-Diamonds} {6-Clubs} {9-Hearts}. With 73,000 chips already in the middle, Skampa's lone opponent, Jazzar Moroun, had first action and moved all in for 64,200. Skampa tanked for about a minute and a half before announcing a call. He mucked after Moroun opened {5-Clubs} {5-Diamonds} for a set of fives. When the stacks were counted down, Moroun just barely had Skampa covered.

Moroun is the new tournament chip leader with about 200,000 chips.
