Another day is in the books here at the 2009 WPT Merit Cyprus Classic, and a bloody day it was. 64% of the 125 players who started the day were goose-egged by the time play was halted for the evening. The 55 who survived will return tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 p.m. local time for another (planned) five levels of poker.
Among the survivors were Team Full Tilt pros Allen Cunningham, Andy Bloch and Chris 'Jesus' Ferguson, along with Tommy Vedes, Antony Lellouche, Sorel Mizzi and your unofficial overnight chip leader, Nenad Medic (277,000).
Strangely enough, John Tabatabai, Phil Gordon, Jan Skampa and Ludovic Lacay -- the four largest stacks at the start of the day -- were all sent packing, in what was, for lack of a better word, a very odd day of poker.
Do join us tomorrow afternoon for our continued coverage of the WPT Merit Cyprus Classic, live from the Merit Crystal Cove Hotel and Casino.
With twelve minutes left on the clock for the day, the dealers have been instructed to deal two more hands at each table and then assist the players with bagging and tagging the chips.
Phil Gordon came into the day second in chip position, but he was stuck in the wrong gear all day, unable to get anything going at his treacherous tables. He certainly didn't want it to come to an end today, but the poker author and commentator has finally been put out of his misery after nearly five levels of suffering.
Gordon got it all in with ace-king before the flop, and Jacques Torbey was the man who would seal his fate, content to race for the knockout with pocket sevens. A third seven on the board spelled the end of Gordon's day, and he slung his player identification badge across the felt to the dealer with a frustrated sigh.
Torbey offered an apology as Gordon paced around the table, but it was unnecessary. "Don't worry about it," said Gordon. "Just put those chips to good use. At the very least, don't use them to double up one of those two!" he said, pointing at Andy Bloch and Chris Ferguson right next to Torbey.
Nenad Medic has been brutalizing his table for much of the last hour. He recently bet 15,700 on a flop of and was called by the button player, Melih Ekmekçioğlu. Both players checked the turn, prompting Medic to bet 43,700 on the river. Ekmekçioğlu surrendered without a fight.
There were 21,000 chips in the pot after the preflop betting was concluded at Antony Lellouche's table. Lellouche, Anthony Aboukhalil and Felix Osterland were the combatants for a flop of . Lellouche checked to Aboukhalil, who fired out 10,000. Osterland quickly gave up the ghost; Lellouche just as quickly check-raised to 30,000. Aboukhalil thought things through for about a minute before folding.
"Good play," he said, knocking the table. "Well done."
Jonathan Little did the best he could to dissuade Engin Sancaktaroglu from continuing with the hand. Little bet 7,000 on the flop and 15,000 when the turn paired the board, . Each time Sancaktaroglu first checked his action, then called Little's bet. When the river fell a third trey, the , both players checked the action down. Sacaktaroglu showed a full house, treys full of queens, made with . It was the winner.
Former big stack Martin Kabrhel just played his final hand here at the 2009 WPT Merit Cyprus Classic. Up to as much as 200,000 in chips earlier today, Kabrhel just played two back-to-back hands that resulted in his ultimate demise.
In the first, he opened with a raise to 5,400 from under-the-gun and was reraised to 18,000 by Zarion Raymin. Action then folded around the table and back to Kabrhel, who moved all in (88,400). It didn't take long for Raymin to make the call, as he tabled two red kings and found himself in great shape against Kabrhel's . The board ran out giving Raymin a full house and just under 180,000 in chips.
After that hand, Kabrhel was left with just 28,600 in chips, which he immediately put to risk holding against Tal Cohen Sasson's . An ace on the flop was all it took to send the maniacally aggressive Kabrhel to the rail.
Almost everything has been going Tommy Vedes' way here on Day of the WPT Merit Cyprus Classic. He recently played a four-way limped pot with, among others Huck Seed. Seed and Vedes were heads up by the turn, . Vedes had first action and made the price of poker 10,000. Seed called.
The river double-paired the board and put three spades out, . Vedes was undeterred and bet another 10,000. That bet put Seed in the tank for almost two minutes before he finally folded. Vedes kindly showed .
