So Long Saout

2009 WSOP Main Event final tablist Antoine Saout has been eliminated here at the start of Level 5. While the bustout happened just after our return from the break -- and prior to our regaining access to the tables -- the real damage for Saout had been done in the final hand of Level 4. Here's the scoop on that one...

Saout had opened with a raise and gotten one caller in Toni Judet. The flop came {A-}{3-}{4-}. Judet checked, Saout continued, and Judet called. The turn brought a {5-}, and another check-call of Saout's bet from Judet. All of Judet's chips went in on the river card -- a "blank," as they say -- and Saout called, creating a pot of more than 60,000. Saout showed {A-}{K-} for aces, but Judet had pocket deuces for the five-high straight, and Saout went to the break with just 2,600.

As mentioned, Saout's return from break was brief, as he switfly lost the last of his short stack. Meanwhile, Judet has moved up over 80,000, the biggest stack around at the moment.

Collet Can't Collect

Ronan Collet raised to 800 from early position, and the big blind defended to see a {a-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} flop. After a quick check from the big blind, Collet bet 1,100, and his opponent called. The {8-Spades} turn earned another check from the big blind. This time, Collet bet 2,875, and the other player thought for a minute before calling. The big blind checked a third time after the {6-Clubs} on the river. Collet debated a third barrel, but gave up instead, tapping the table and showing {k-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}. His opponent's {j-Clubs}{9-Spades} was good for the pot, and Collet slipped to 36,500.

Gomes Finally Wins a Hefty Pot

Alex Gomes is up to nearly 40,000 after collecting a nice pot.

The flop read {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} and Gomes called a bet of 1,200 from an opponent. After the {10-Clubs} turn card fell, Gomes again called a bet from his opponent, this time 2,400. The {3-Clubs} hit the river and Gomes' opponent bet 3,500. Gomes calmly raised to 11,000 and his opponent did not appear thrilled while tossing in the chips to call.

Gomes tabled {A-Clubs}{2-Clubs} for the nuts and has finally gained some traction in the Main Event.

Point to Benzinou

Two players had limped from early and middle position when the cutoff made it 1,350 to go, drawing calls from three players total -- Joel Benzinou in the big blind, and both of the limpers.

The flop came a provocative {9-Spades}{J-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}. Benzinou, wearing a black hoodie with a white exclamation point on the back -- checked, and the first limper bet 1,600. The next player folded, the cutoff called, and Benzinou called as well.

The turn was another eyebrow-raiser, the {K-Diamonds}. Benzinou again checked, and the early position player bet 5,500. The cutoff folded, and the action was on Benzinou. The Belgian sat quietly for a moment, then gathered a stack of chips and set it forward. The stack stood there before him for a moment -- like an exclamation point -- then tumbled forward. The dealer then counted out the chips -- 13,800.

Benzinou had gotten his opponent's attention. He hemmed and hawed a bit, then showed one card -- the {Q-Clubs} -- before letting his hand go. Benzinou moves up to about 52,000 after that one.

Rettenmaier Running Out of Time

With 18,000 in the middle, a player moved all in for his last 10,000 and change on a flop of {8-Hearts}{5-Spades}{3-Spades}. Marvin Rettenmaier contemplated the call, which would commit nearly all of his own stack. Rettenmaier takes his time with decisions. There were already several bouts of yelling at his first table over the length of his though process, and it didn't take long for his new table to get frustrated as well. A player called the clock quickly, but the floor determined that the decision was big enough to merit more time than Rettenmaier had taken.

A few minutes passed while the floor stood watch and Rettenmaier thought. He asked if his opponent would show, and the other man quickly agreed. Rettenmaier sighed and went back into the tank. The floor then asked the original clock caller if he'd like to call it again, and Rettenmaier was given a final minute to make his decision. He folded, saving his last 10,500. His opponent showed {6-Hearts}{5-Hearts}, and Rettenmaier jumped from his chair in disgust.

Judet Doing Just Fine

Since building that big stack, Toni Judet has been consistently applying pressure on his tablemates here during Level 5. Just now he experienced a bit of pushing back.

A player in middle position had raised to 725, and Judet reraised to 1,925 from the button. The blinds got out, and Judet's opponent wasted little time reraising all in for his last 11,000 or so. Judet didn't have to think about it very long either, and let his cards go. He still sits with 74,000.

Levi Crosses the 50K Mark

With about 4,600 in the pot and the board reading {J-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{9-Clubs}, Nicolas Levi fired a bet of 3,700. His lone opponent in the hand took his time before calling with the {Q-Hearts} landing on the river.

Levi slowed down and checked. His opponent did so as well and Levi tabled {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades} for a rivered set. His opponent mucked and Levi is up to about 51,000.

Levi Breaks One

One of the few female players in our Day 1a field opened with a raise to 1,000 from middle position, and it folded around to Nicolas Levi on the button who made it 3,000. The blinds got out, the original raiser pushed all in for her last 9,000 or so, and Levi quickly called.

Levi tabled {10-Spades}{10-Clubs} and had his opponent in bad shape with her {8-Spades}{8-Hearts}. The community cards came {K-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}, and Levi collected the chips, improving to about 55,000.

That makes 24 eliminations thus far today, leaving us with 113 players from our starting field of 137 still fighting to make Day 2.
