Day 1b Started

Day 1b of the 2015 partypoker WPT Canadian Spring Championship Starts Now!

The World Poker Tour returns to the Playground Poker Club in Montreal, Quebec, Canada this morning for the second of two starting flights in the partypoker.net WPT Canadian Spring Championship.

This is the first stop of WPT's 14th season and drew 136 entries on Friday's Day 1a.

Just 50 players survived through ten 60-minute levels, the same number they will play today beginning at 11 a.m. local time.

Canadian Mike Leah bagged the chip lead putting up a number close to 270,000.

In 2014, this tournament was a WPT National event that drew 1,079 entries with Jason Comtois winning it all.

Organizers are expecting a big number today with a host of partypoker online qualifiers and Playground satellite winners planning to jump in the fray.

Plus, anyone who busted or bagged a short stack Friday can fire a second bullet today.

Players will start with a 30,000-chip stack and a chair, the rest is up to them.

Stay tuned right here as the PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be on hand for it all with live updates and videos throughout.

No TV for this event means no commentary duties for the legendary Mike Sexton.

As a result, the partypoker Team Pro fired a bullet today and is off to a decent start. Heads up on the button against the cutoff, Sexton got 300 chips in before the flop.

Then, when the flop fell {A-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} and his opponent bet 500, Sexton bumped it to 1,000. His opponent tossed it in the muck and Sexton chipped up to begin play.

Griffin Benger
Griffin Benger

It's a hot start for Canadian and 2013 EPT Berlin High Roller champ Griffin Benger.

He opened to 275, then called a three-bet to 775 going heads up to a {10-Spades}{6-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} flop. Benger check called 800 on this street, but when the {5-Spades} turn showed up, he led out for a lofty 1,850.

His opponent folded and Benger is off to a fast start on home soil.

Tam Ho

Tam Ho just grabbed the Level 1 chip lead with a double up.

He flopped two pair with {3-}{5-} and got all his chips in the middle once his heads-up opponent turned the nut straight.

The river card was money for Ho though, as he made a boat,

Wang Wasted

Brian Wang
Brian Wang

After building a big enough stack to take the chip lead into the dinner break on Day 1a, Toronto's Brian Wang wilted in the later levels, dumping most of his chips to local WSOP bracelet winner Pascal LeFrancois on the way out the door.

Unfazed, Wang came out and fired a second bullet today, but after getting short early he got involved in a blind on blind raising war where he eventually called all in with {9-Spades}{9-Hearts}. Unfortunately for Wang, the big blind held {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds}.

The {K-Clubs}{7-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{7-Hearts} run out was the end for Wang.

Eric Afriat
Eric Afriat

After busting out in a flush over flush debacle on Day 1a, Montreal local and 2014 WPT Seminole Hard Rock Showdown champ Eric Afriat left the Playground feeling a little sour.

Well, he's all smiles today, having dragged two sizable pots by making flushes against overpairs and chipping up to around three times the starting stack with his second bullet.

Just halfway through the day's second level, Afriat is pushing the 100,000-chip mark and leads the field.
