Mian Wei Wins the 2015 WPT UK High Roller (£100,000)

Level 25 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
Mian Wei wins!
Mian Wei wins!

Mian Wei has won the 2015 World Poker Tour UK High Roller event, a title that came with a coveted winner’s trophy and £100,000 in cash.

Wei was one of 48 players to exchange £5,000+£250 for 50,000 tournament chips and the chance to become a WPT champion. Day 1 ended with 29 entrants, but this figure increased dramatically thanks to the WPT allowing players to buy in on Day 2 with a 50-big blind stack.

Some of those who took advantage of the late registration period included Waheed Ashraf, James Akenhead, Matas Cimbolas, Nick Hicks, Simon Higgins, Chris Sly, Martyn Frey, and Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi. Of that talented bunch of players, only Mizrachi walked away with some prize money to show for their effort.

The unofficial nine-handed final table was reached at around 8:00 p.m. UK time, eight hours after play kicked off, and it was the aforementioned Mizrachi who led the way. A combination of running good and playing well seemed to be an unstoppable combination, but the title eluded the popular American.

Richard Bacon and Joel Ettedgi busted in ninth and eighth place respectively, with Kuljinder Sidhu earning the unwanted title of bubble boy, busting in seventh place with only six places paid. Sidhu’s {A-}{8-} couldn’t come from behind to beat the {A-}{J-} of 2015 European Poker Tour Barcelona Main Event runner-up Steven Warburton.

Billy Chattaway was the first player to bust inside the money, earning himself £10,000.

Scotland’s Daniel McAulay doubled that sum when he pushed his {10-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} into Mizrachi’s {J-Spades}{10-Spades} to fall in fifth place.

Four-handed play lasted the better part of an hour and ended with Mizrachi’s demise. After looking like he was going to run away with the title, Mizrachi lost several large pots before pushing all in from the small blind with {K-}{10-} and losing to the eventual champion’s {Q-}{7-} when a queen appeared on the river.

Another hour passed at Dusk Till Dawn before Warburton’s impressive run came to an end. With Mizrachi out of the picture, all eyes were on Warburton, but he couldn’t quite find the winning formula. Warburton’s exit hand saw him all-in with {K-Spades}{5-Spades} versus Mario Sanchez Cano’s {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}, and when the five community cards fell {Q-Hearts}{2-Spades}{3-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} heads-up was set.

Heads-up spanned three hours and the chip lead swapped hands countless times during the battle. The contest was nearly over 30-minutes into the one-on-one match but Wei’s {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds} couldn’t connect to beat Sanchez’s {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}.

Just as it looked like the tournament would go on for several more hours, Wie raised with the {6-Diamonds}{6-Spades} and then called when Sanchez moved all-in with an inferior pair of threes. No drama from the board saw the 2,600,000 chips slide to Wei, Sanchez bust in second place, and an emotional Wei be crowned the 2015 WPT UK High Roller champion.

Sanchez Shows a Big Bluff; Reclaims Lead

Level 24 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Mario Sanchez
Mario Sanchez

With the board reading {9-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}, Mian Wei checked and watched on as Matio Sanchez Cano bet 115,000. After a few moments, Wei check-raised to 400,000 and Sanchez made the call.

Wei checked the flush-completing {A-Diamonds} on the river and Sanchez moved all-in for 782,000. Wei dropped half of a tower of orange 25,000 chips and rubbed his face. He sat squirming in his seat while he made his decision, finally settling on a fold.

As Wei's cards hit the muck, Sanchez showed the {10-Hearts}{8-Hearts} for a missed straight draw, much to the delight of his amigos on the rail who cheered loudly at their hero's bluff.

Senh Ung

Senh Ung has bust in 10th place at the hands of Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi.

Mizrachi raised from the small blind and called for not many more chips when Ung three-bet all-in from the next seat along. Mizrachi showed {K-Clubs}{Q-Clubs} and although Ung's {J-Hearts}{9-Hearts} took the lead on the {9-Spades}{10-Hearts}{A-Hearts} flop, it fell behind on the {J-Spades} turn. The {A-Spades} river sent Ung to the rail and the tournament to its final table.

Mizrachi Building Mountains

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Michael Mizrachi
Michael Mizrachi

"Who let Mizrachi play, he's got too many chips," joked Simon Higgins to us on the tournament floor, himself a victim of Mizrachi, losing a flip to bust in 23rd place.

Mizrachi is up to a colossal 380,000 chips now and is going to be a real pain to play again now that he can bully everyone.

After Mario Sanchez Cano raised to 7,000 from early position, Daniel Barriocanal three-bet to 18,700 only to see Mizrachi make it 36,500 from the small blind. Both of the initial raisers folded and Mizrachi continued building mountains of chips.
