Rachid Rami Wins the 2016 PMU.fr WPT National Marrakech Main Event for Almost $100,000!

Level 32 : 80,000/160,000, 20,000 ante
Rachid Rami
Rachid Rami

The PMU.fr World Poker Tour National Marrakech Main Event attracted a field of 396 players. A whole lot of them came from France; they came in big numbers to claim the title for the second year in a row. They tried, but they failed. Rachid Rami repelled all attacks, claiming victory in his home country and banking MAD 950,000 ($97,586)!

The third and final day of the WPT National started with 14 players divided over two tables. The event had moved to a new room in the beautiful Es Saadi Resort. A lavish room with a big carpet and a tv set a lot of poker tournaments would envy. The cameras were buzzing, red lights shining; silence on the set... action!

With the live stream broadcasting all the action, Twitch viewers didn't have to wait long for action. Sebastien Boyard was the first to fall, followed by Nicolas Vayssieres and Arturo Fernandez Barge.

Another player that would miss out on the final table was Jerome Sgorrano. Sgorrano, who won the Sismix Winamax Main Event here in Marrakech a couple of months ago, was short and ran king-eight into king-queen and failed to catch up.

After the likable Houssine El Otmani busted in 10th, the final table was set.

2016 PMU.fr WPT National Marrakech Main Event Final Table

The first hand of that final table instantly meant action as Jean-Claude Guiot busted out. Queen-nine would prove no obstacle for pocket tens and just like that, it was 8-handed.

It would take some time before Mathieu Maroccini hit the rail in 8th place. He was already severely short stacked when he called a raise with king-ten suited. Mohamed Lahlou squized behind him with ace-queen and Maroccini went for it and called all in. No luck on the flop, turn or river and Maroccini was eliminated.

Four minutes later, Joao Pinto Correia from Portugal followed him out the door. He pushed with queen-jack off suit and while players with nines and ace-ten folded, Rachid Rami wasn't folding ace-king suited. Correia flopped a queen but the ace on the turn meant it was time to pack the bags for Correia.

Alexandre Andre Henri De Zutter, by far the most active player at the table, was next to go. He check-raise min raise bluffed all in on the river only to get called by a straight.

Next up was Alexandre Riccomi, busting in 5th place with second pair all in against top two - drawing dead.

The drama didn't end there as minutes later Dimitri Sukhorukov hit the rail. Sukhorukov, according to the local French media a two-time Sunday Million champ, was playing incredibly solid all tournament but couldn't get away from a set of jacks on a board with three diamonds. Mohammed Lahlou had shown some fine acting work, huffing and puffing like he had a tough decision, only to raise all-in on the river. You could see the surprise on Sukhorukov's face and while he wasn't having any of it really, he still reluctantly called all in. Down to 3 players, just like that.

Rachid Rami asked if his two opponents were interested in a deal but the sole French player, 19-year old Arhur Conan, declined instantly with the words "Uhm... no." Conan, in the eyes of Rami and to some extent Lahlou, was playing the role of Barbarian, declining a deal. It would end up costing him, as he eventually finished in 3rd place. Conan was grinded down by Rami and Lahlou and found himself short and in need of a double up. He went for it with pocket fours and got called by Rami with ace-queen. Rami made a straight on the river to send Conan home and the event was guaranteed a Moroccan champion.

Rachid Rami started out with a big lead. At one point, with Lahlou having two-pair and Rami a flush, the latter raised on the river. As soon as Lahlou called, Rami started celebrating thinking he had won the tournament. Rami hadn't pushed all in, though, and his opponent still had plenty of chips left to play with. Rami was confused, realized what had happened, and said he had jinxed himself.

In the end, it wouldn't turn out to be a very effective jinx as he won anyway. Lahlou grinded himself back to almost even stacks but couldn't get away from jacks on a deuce-deuce-three board with a flush draw. The two of them got it all in and Rami showed six-deuce. As the turn and river blanked, Lahlou said his goodbyes and Rami was going to lift the trophy. Rami, who had qualified for this event in a €150-buy in live satellite here in Marrakech, celebrated his victory with his friends and posed for all the photos people wanted.

Mohammed Lahlou Eliminated in 2nd Place (MAD 650,000)

Level 32 : 80,000/160,000, 20,000 ante
Mohammed Lahlou
Mohammed Lahlou

Mohammed Lahlou had battled back to 34 versus 39 big blinds, a difference a single pot could straighten out. It would end differently.

Mohammed Lahlou raised with {J-Diamonds}{J-Clubs} to a hefty 500,000 at 80,000/160,000. Rachid Rami called with the speculative {6-Clubs}{2-Clubs}.

The flop came {3-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{2-Spades} and Rami checked. Lahlou bet 650,000 into the 1,040,000 pot and Rami check-raised to 1.4 million. Lahlou didn't hesitate, shoving for 4,910,000. Rami called instantly.

The {6-Diamonds} on the turn was effectively a blank as Lahlou could still hit a jack to win. The river was the {A-Hearts}, however, and Lahlou had to settle for second place.

From the button, Rachid Rami raised {A-Spades}{Q-Clubs} to 250,000. Small blind Arthur Conan pushed for 1,495,000 with {4-Hearts}{4-Spades} and Mohammed Lahlou folded. Rami called.

The flop came {J-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{K-Hearts}. Conan remained in the lead but Rami had a gutshot on top his two live cards.

The {3-Clubs} on the turn added a flush draw for Rami but he still had "just" 39 percent.

The {10-Spades} completed the board, giving Rami broadway and prompting some celebrations from the Moroccon players and rail.

Arthur Conan, just 19 years old, had to settle for 3rd place. Heads up now between Lahlou and Rami.

Level 28 : 30,000/60,000, 10,000 ante
Dimitri Sukhorukov
Dimitri Sukhorukov

Dimitri Sukhorukov was first to act and with {J-Spades}{J-Clubs} he made it 125,000. Conan folded but Mohammed Lahlou wasn't so eager to do the same with {A-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} and called from the small blind.

The flop came {K-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} and Lahlou checked. Sukhorukov bet 130,000, Lahlou thought for a bit before he called.

The {J-Diamonds} on the turn was an action card! Lahlou checked again and Sukhorukov bet 285,000 into 610,000. Lahlou acted like he wasn't so sure what to do; wiped his forehead, scratched his arm, and called, growing the pot to 1,180,000.

The river {8-Spades} was a blank and Lahlou checked for the third time. After some tanking, Sukhorukov bet 725,000. Lahlou announced all in and Sukhorukov wasn't hiding his surprised face.

He thought about it for a fair bit before he eventually called, while we couldn't see how much he still had behind at the time. He got the bad news instantly and Sukhorukov shook hands before he made his exit in 4th place. Sukhorukov, who won the Sunday Million twice in his life according to French colleagues here, had to settle for MAD 323,000.

Alexandre Riccomi

Action folded to Alexandre Riccomi in the small blind and he limped in with {J-Hearts}{8-Spades}. Big blind Rachid Rami instantly checked with {Q-Diamonds}{J-Spades}.

The flop came {3-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{J-Clubs}, giving both players top pair. Riccomi checked and Rami bet 100,000. Riccomi check-raised to 200,000 and Rami instantly called.

The {Q-Clubs} hit the turn, making Rami two-pair. Riccomi checked and Rami (again instantly) grabbed some randomly selected chips and splashed the pot with 'em. Riccomi check-raised all in for 1,020,000 and Rami called like we've only ever seen Hellmuth do; incredibly fast.

The {Q-Hearts} on the river was of no real importance, start of day chip leader Alexandre Riccomi was eliminated.

Both of them checked the flop of {10-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} before the {A-Hearts} hit the turn. De Zutter checked again, and called Conan's 160,000-bet.

The river was the {K-Diamonds} and De Zutter checked again. Conan bet 350,000 into 595,000 and after just a bit, De Zutter check-raised all in for 650,000 total. Conan called with his rivered straight and De Zutter instantly said "Nice hand."

The player from Portugal was at risk but flopped good: {7-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}.

Rami was disappointed, but the {A-Clubs} on the turn changed all that. The {3-Hearts} on the river was a blank and Joao Pinto Correia made his exit in 7th place.
