The Captain Checks to the River

"The Captain" Tom Franklin opened for 8,000 and John Ross popped it to 22,500 from the button. Action folded back around to Franklin and he called. The flop fell {3-Hearts} {8-Spades} {Q-Clubs} and they both checked. The turn came {6-Diamonds} and they checked to the {A-Spades} river. Franklin checked a third time and Ross threw out 29,000. Franklin sat for a moment before mucking his hand.

Brown Doubles a Shorty

"I'm in really bad shape," we heard Chad Brown say a couple tables away. We made our way over to discover he had called an opponent's pre flop all-in bet of 23,500 with {5-Spades}{5-Hearts} and was up against {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts} on a {J-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}{2-Hearts} flop. Neither the {8-Spades} turn nor {6-Diamonds} river helped Brown, and he was knocked down to 60K.

Lawrence Doubles with Queens

Matt Lawrence got his stack of 69,500 all in preflop with {Q-Clubs}{Q-Clubs} and was up against the {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts} of his opponent. It was a classic race, with last year's National Championship qualifier at risk. Such situations are usually pretty stressful for players, so we're sure Lawrence was relieved to see a third queen appear on the {2-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds} flop. The {10-Clubs} turn and {2-Hearts} river changed nothing, and Lawrence doubled to a healthy 150,000.

Monkey Says Goodbye to Chicago

Literally dozens of players have been eliminated here in the first level of Day 2, and one of them was Will "Monkey" Souther, who began the day on a short stack.

As he explained via Twitter: "Busto. Pick up 3 pots on 1st orbit to go to 50k. C/o raise, button call, i jam AKs in SB. BB snaps with JJ. Q-J-Q-K-2. Bye Chicago."

Fast Start for Orr

Wisconsin poker player, John Orr, has had a heck of a day so far. He began Day 2 with a healthy stack of 200,000, but quickly built that up to 375,000 after a set-over-set situation where his jacks defeated an opponent's tens. However, Orr couldn't hold onto those chips as he later lost with {A-}{Q-} against {K-}{K-}.

Orr didn't stop there as he soon flopped a set of sevens and took down a nice pot off an opponent with {9-}{9-}. Orr is sitting pretty right now with 390,000 in chips.

Hankins Eliminated

We're not sure of the action, but we do know that Matthew Hankins and an opponent became involved in a raising war that saw the former player all in for a little over 100K.

Showdown
Hankins: {7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}
Opponent: {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades}

It was a bad spot for Hankins, and he was up out of his seat even before the {6-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{2-Spades} flop. When the dealer burned and turned the {Q-Clubs}, Hankins grabbed his things in preparation for his departure, which he made when the {2-Diamonds} appeared on the river.

Just The Bair Necessities

Eric Bair is in solid control of his table and has steadily chipped up through the early stages today. Recently, he opened for 11,000 in middle position and found two callers. The flop came {8-Spades} {A-Hearts} {K-Spades}, the big blind checked and Bair bet 21,000. Both opponents folded and Bair added to his 40 chip tall stacks.
