Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Ari Engel played a hand slowly.
Ari Engel played a hand slowly.

Ari Engel opened for 450 from middle position and the player on his left raised to 1,000. Action folded back around to Engel and he called. The flop came {8-Spades} {J-Spades} {5-Hearts}, Engel checked and his opponent bet 1,300. Engel took a few moments before calling, looking his opponent up and down.

The turn came {10-Hearts} and both players checked. The river brought the {6-Spades}, Engel checked and his opponent took his time before he rapped the table as well. Engel turned up two red nines and his opponent mucked. Engle is at 34,000.

The turn was the {8-Spades}, and Nguyen checked again. Borrero fired 2,000, and Nguyen called. The {4-Diamonds} completed the board, and Nguyen moved all in for 8,850. Borrero tank-folded, showing two black jacks. Nguyen mucked his hand, and raked in the pot.

600 Runners

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante

It looks like we have 225 entrants for this flight and combined with Day 1a's starting field of 375, there are 600 entrants to this event. Registration is open until the start of play so that number will go up a bit. Tournament officials are pleased to pass the mark of 442 players last year.

Hawkes Survives Scary Flop

The player under the gun opened for 450, Lisa Hawkes called and two other players followed suit. The flop came {4-Hearts} {5-Hearts} {6-Hearts} and action checked to Hawkes. She bet 1,500 and got one call. The turn came {Q-Clubs} and Hawkes fired out 2,000. She got another call and the river hit {9-Hearts}. Both players checked and Hawkes turned up {9-Spades} {9-Clubs} and her opponent mucked.

She let out a huge sigh of relief as she stacked the pot.

Just a Nine

Joanne Monteavaro
Joanne Monteavaro

Joanne Monteavaro and Chris Bell were heads up with the board reading {k-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}. Bell fired 800, and Monteavaro called. The two checked after the {6-Diamonds} turned, and the {4-Clubs} fell on the river.

"Nine," Bell said.

Monteavaro showed {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs} for a pair of queens, and Bell mucked.

"Wait," Adam Lippert interjected. "Did you just say nine?"

Bell grinned at Lippert as Monteavaro pulled in the pot.
