Day 2 Started
Welcome back to the 2011/2012 World Series of Poker Circuit $1,600 Harrah’s New Orleans Main Event. Yesterday, 630 players took their shot at WSOP Circuit glory. Many had their eyes set on the top prize, but plenty of others were more concerned with earning last-chance points toward this year’s $1-million National Championship.
Today, 337 players will return for Day 2 action. Among them are some familiar names in Mark “Pegasus” Smith, Kenny Milam, “Cowboy” John Land, John Dolan, Darvin Moon, Aaron Massey, Matthew Chang, Tripp Kirk, Sam Barnhart, Kurt Jewell, Ryan Tepen and Matthew Hankins, just to name a few.
Unfortunately, today will be marred with eliminations as the players look to make the money. We’re not sure of the plan quite yet, but we overheard a tournament officials say they hope to play down to 54 players. Needless to say, a lot of players are going to leave disappointed.
Some favorites who are primed for a deep run are the Day 1a chip leader, Jay “queen10off” Kaplan, and Day 1b leader, Jonathan Job. Johnny Landreth, Bobby Toye, Shane Matthews and Terry Kim join them toward the top of the chip counts.
Here’s a look at some of the more notable stacks among the337 players returning for Day 2:
Player | Count |
---|---|
Jay “queen10off” Kaplan | 148,400 |
Johnny Landreth | 125,700 |
Bobby Toye | 124,800 |
Shane Matthews | 116,000 |
Terry Kim | 115,400 |
Jonathan Job | 114,600 |
Chris Adams | 112,000 |
Conrad Monica | 111,800 |
“Cowboy” John Land | 110,000 |
James Arruebarrena | 101,300 |
Registration is open until the start of play today, so the final number of players, prize pool and first-place prize won’t be known until then. Action will kick off in about a half hour, so join us then as we make our way toward the money in the last WSOP Circuit Main Event of the season.

Cards are in the air for the start of Day 2.
"Seat open," is what we've been hearing from around the room. That means there have been a bevy of eliminations here in the opening minutes. Here's a look at some of the players who've made an early exit here on Day 2:
William McCraw
Jose Serratos
Christopher Boyd
Chris Gray
Mark Eastham
David Ciener
Action folded to a short-stacked Huy Nguyen on the button and he moved all in for his last 7,300. Chris Savage, one of our chip leaders here on Day 2, was in the small blind and made the call. David Weinstein was in the big blind and opted to move all in over the top for 13,200 more, and Savage made a reluctant call to put both his opponents at risk.

The flop wasn't particularly interesting, but the turn did give Nguyen some hope. Unfortunately for him, it was extinguished when the blanked on the river. Weinstein more than doubled on the hand while Nguyen made an early exit.
Over at Table 73, Jesse Cohen got his short stack all in preflop with and was racing against the of Robert Paddock. Cohen seemed content to be in a race situation, but his contentment dwindled when the flop came down and gave his opponent a set. Neither the turn nor river changed a thing, and Cohen was eliminated from the Main Event.
Likewise, James Mordue has been eliminated from Table 73.
The following players are among the latest casualties:
Jake Schwartz
Jeremy Gaubert
Louis Crispino
Jeffrey Hoffman
Matthew Bramble
Nelson Robinson
James Henson
Vern Laing
Jacob Bazeley
Patricia Till

The tournament director just informed us that the WSOP Circuit Harrah's Main Event has draw 694 players, crushing last year's field of 380. What's more, it has created a $1,009,070 prize pool! The staff is still working on the payout structure, and we'll be sure to bring that to you just as soon as we have it.
