Newcombe Joins The Half Million Chip Club

Population: 2

A few hours after John Riordan crossed 500,000, somebody else has finally done the same. Matt Newcombe had about 420,000 in chips before busting an opponent.

After raising and calling an opponent's re-raise, Newcombe watched a {Q-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{5-Spades} flop hit the board. His opponent fired at it, but Newcombe came along to see the {8-Clubs} turn. His opponent went all in for about 110,000 and Newcombe was more than happy to call with {8-Hearts}{8-Spades} for a turned set. With {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}, his opponent found no help from the river.

Newcombe Slides

Matt Newcombe sat atop the chip counts briefly after John Riordan lost some chips, but Newcombe just lost a pot of his own.

After a player in middle position opened to 11,000, Newcombe called from the hijack. The player in the cutoff put in a three-bet to 42,000 and only Newcombe came along to see the {J-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{6-Clubs} flop.

A check from Newcombe led to a bet of about 43,000 from his opponent. After a good 90 seconds in the tank, Newcombe popped it to 101,000, but his opponent had none of it. A quick all-in and fold came next, as Newcombe lost roughly 150,000 of his stack.

Zhao Makes His Move

Reed Zhao opened the last pot with an under-the-gun raise, and the betting action that followed left the man to his left all in for close to 200,000. Zhao put his chips in with {A-Spades} {J-Spades}, but his opponent's {A-Clubs} {Q-Clubs} was the big favorite to drag the big pot.

The dealer had other ideas, though, spreading a {J-Clubs} {J-Diamonds} {8-Spades} flop to give Zhao a big lead with two to come. The {K-Diamonds} turn opened up a few outs for the at-risk player, but the river {K-Spades} was no help. With that, Zhao has sent a player to the exit here shy of the bubble, stacking up about 460,000 as he pulls in that pot.

Cai Dented

We didn't see how the money got in, but Zhen Cai and the gentleman in Seat 8 got their chips all in preflop on a coin flip. It was {A-Diamonds} {Q-Diamonds} for Cai and {J-Hearts} {J-Spades} for Seat 8 who was all in for 107,500.

The board ran through {9-Hearts} {3-Diamonds} {3-Clubs} {10-Hearts} {8-Diamonds}, and Cai's overcards never came through. After paying off his debt, he's been reduced back down to 51,000, and he'll have to work a comeback from his 10bb stack.
