Saul Sets 'Em Up

Level 16 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante

We happened upon a hand in progress with around 30,000 in the pot and a flop of {7-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{a-Hearts}. Kevin "BeL0WaB0Ve" Saul had checked from middle position and the player to his direct left bet 20,000. Saul thought for a solid minute before making the call, and then he checked for a second time on the {8-Spades} turn.

His opponent then fired another 20,000 and Saul tanked for a long time before moving all in for 77,500 more. His opponent called with the {A-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}, but he was drawing dead as Saul held a set with the {3-Spades}{3-Hearts}. The meaningless {6-Clubs} completed the board on the river and Saul doubled big.

Saul on the Ascent

Level 16 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante

Kevin Saul has enjoyed a positive Sunday afternoon, having built his chip stack well over 200,000 to challenge for the chip lead. He just added a few more to his stack in a three-way hand also involving Tom Cope.

After a Cope raise and both blinds calling — with Saul in the small blind — the flop came {6-Spades}{9-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} and Saul checked. The big blind bet 4,000, Cope raised to 8,000, and both Saul and the big blind called.

The turn was the {8-Hearts} and this time Saul led for 10,000, and only Cope called. Both players then checked the {7-Hearts} river.

"One pair," said Cope, but Saul tabled {9-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} for two pair to claim the pot.

Raymer Runs Into Aces

Level 16 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante

Greg Raymer has been eliminated here in Level 16.

Having been chipped down to around 60,000, Raymer opened with a standard raise then saw an opponent make a substantial reraise behind. The rest of Raymer's chips soon found their way in the middle as he'd been dealt {K-}{K-}, but unfortunately for the 2004 WSOP Main Event champion his opponent held {A-}{A-}.

The board brought no help to Raymer's hand, thus ending his Main Event run here in Foxwoods.

Frankenberger Busted

Level 16 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Andy Frankenberger on Day 1a of the 2013 WSOP Circuit Foxwoods.
Andy Frankenberger on Day 1a of the 2013 WSOP Circuit Foxwoods.

Andy Frankenberger stopped by the media desk and informed us of his untimely demise. The two-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner started the day with a decent amount of chips, but he was never able to get anything going.

According to Frankenberger, he shoved the button for 44,000 with {A-}{7-} only to run into another player's {A-}{10-}. The board ran out {a-}{4-}{4-}{9-}{3-} and a disappointed Frankenberger took his leave from the Foxwoods Main Event.

Birnbaum vs. Buck

Level 17 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Nancy Birnbaum
Nancy Birnbaum

Over on the feature table, a pot developed between Buck Ramsay and Nancy Birnbaum that saw the latter drop a bit in chips.

We picked up the action with around 20,000 in the pot and a board reading {j-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{X-}. Ramsay led out for 10,500, Birnbaum called, and then both players checked the {Q-Hearts} river. Ramsay tabled the {J-Hearts}{8-Hearts} for two pair, and it was good as Birnbaum simply sent her hand to the muck.

The Sudden Rise of Jonathan Gray, Part 1

Level 17 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante

We can definitively report that we have a new chip leader — Jonathan Gray. Indeed, the last ten minutes or so have been fairly remarkable for Gray, thanks to two huge hands in close succession.

The first one saw Gray and his neighbor to the left, Nesrine Kourdourli, get into a preflop raising war that eventually saw Kourdourli all in and Gray tanking for some time before calling for about 160,000 total. The two had begun the hand nearly even, with Kourdourli having had Gray covered by a small amount.

The pair tabled their cards, and Gray showed {Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts} while Kourdouli turned over {A-Spades}{K-Spades}.

The dealer then spread the flop… {2-Spades}{8-Spades}{Q-Spades}! "Oooohhh," said the table at the sight of the three spades to give Kourdourli the flush as well as the queen to give Gray a set. The turn then brought the {7-Spades}, keeping Kourdourli in front.

Then came the river… {2-Diamonds}!

"Oooohhh," said the table once more, this time a little louder, as Gray had filled up to make a full house and better Kourdourli.

As mentioned, the drama would continue shortly thereafter… as will be revealed in part 2.
