Dukes Done

Level 4 : 100/200, 0 ante

Melvin Dukes made it through the first three levels today having lost about a third of his starting stack of 20,000. He thought his fortunes had changed, however, here at the start of Level 4 after getting his stack all in preflop with {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts} and having to fade Kenneth Robbins's {J-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}.

The {8-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{4-Spades} flop was okay for Dukes, but the {J-Spades} turn gave his opponent a set, and after the {4-Clubs} his Main Event run came to an abrupt, early end.

Kirkland Can't Conquer Kings

Level 4 : 100/200, 0 ante

Christopher Kirland — winner of Event #5 ($365 NLHE) here at Harrah's Cherokee earlier this week for a $27,216 first prize — just called an opponent's preflop raise out of the big blind, then led for 1,500 at a {4-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{10-Hearts} flop. His opponent called the flop bet, then when the {Q-Spades} turn came Kirkland checked and his opponent bet 2,500. Kirkland thought a moment, then called.

Both players then checked the {7-Clubs} river, and when Kirkland's opponent tabled {K-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}, Kirkland mucked.

Cranfill Lets It Go

Level 4 : 100/200, 0 ante

Four players saw a flop come {Q-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{2-Hearts}, and when it checked to Josh Cranfill he bet 1,200, with only the opponent playing on the button behind him calling.

The turn then brought the {J-Diamonds}. This time Cranfill bet 1,500, and when his opponent raised to 3,500, Cranfill thought about a half-minute before letting his hand go.

Robinson Drops a Few

Level 5 : 100/200, 25 ante

We came on a hand involving Nelson Robinson in which he and a short-stacked opponent had reached the turn with the board showing {J-Hearts}{3-Spades}{A-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}, at which point Robinson was calling a bet of 4,000 from his opponent.

Before the river card appeared, Robinson's opponent declared he was going all in dark, and after the {K-Spades} arrived on fifth street Robinson found out the bet was for 2,900.

Robinson called, and his opponent tabled {A-Spades}{3-Hearts} for a full house. As it was an all-in situation, Robinson had to show his hand, too — {A-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} — and he delivered the required chips across the felt.

He Doesn't Always Call All-In With King-High, But When He Does, He's Correct

Level 5 : 100/200, 25 ante

"I don't usually do this...but I have to tell you about this hand. It was the most interesting hand of my five-year poker career."

That's what 2012 World Series of Poker bracelet winner Carter Phillips told us after busting a few minutes ago. So, we pulled up a chair for him, and listened.

According to Phillips, he was faced with an open to 450 from an opponent. He three-bet to 1,200 from the blinds with {k-}{9-}, the player called, and the dealer fanned {j-}{10-}{4-} with two clubs. Phillips led out for 1,225, the player raised to 2,550, and Phillips re-raised to 5,800. He called.

The turn was the {j-Diamonds}.

"I bet 4,200 to induce a shove," Phillips explained. "And when he did shove - for 14,000 or so - I stood up and told the table that I wasn't calling with a draw. I thought my king-high was good."

Phillips indeed called, and the player showed {q-Spades}{9-Spades}.

The player was drawing to three kings and four eights, and the {8-Clubs} spiked on the river.

"It was the most interesting hand of my career," Phillips echoed one last time, then exited.

On Broadway

Ryan Riess (Day 1a)
Ryan Riess (Day 1a)

Ryan Riess and an opponent were heads up on a board of {j-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{5-Clubs}. Riess fired out what looked like a 4,000-chip bet, and his opponent called.

Riess tabled {k-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} for Broadway, and his opponent mucked his hand. Riess, who finished runner-up in the World Series of Poker Circuit Hammond Main Event, lost a few chips earlier, and is now back to around 55,000.
