Tough Tables Galore

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

To be fair, almost every table in the room us stacked and could be considered a "Table of Doom," though one has been garnering a little more attention than most due to the lineup. Have a look:

Talley Sits Down, Talley Starts Firing

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

Caufman Talley, who finished 13th on the WSOP-C National Leader Board with 180 points, just sat down, and in his first hand he won a 30,000 chip pot. We reached the table on the river, and his opponent checked on a board of {q-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}. Talley fired out 10,075, the player called, and the Louisiana native showed {5-Spades}{5-Clubs} for a full house.

The very next hand, Talley opened to 300 in middle position, Vanessa Selbst called on the button, and Talley fired another 250 on a flop of {j-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}. Selbst raised to 800, Talley re-popped her to 1,600, and she called.

The turn was the {7-Diamonds}, Talley led out for 2,100, and Selbst called. Both players checked when the {q-Hearts} completed the board. Talley turned over {a-Clubs}{6-Clubs} for a pair of aces, and Selbst showed {a-Spades}{3-Spades} for her own pair of aces. The seven on the board played, and the two chopped the pot.

"We both overplayed our ace," Selbst chuckled.

Bjerno Flops a Set

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

On one of the last hands of Level 1, we found Nathan Bjerno and Bryan Campanello heads up on a board of {9-Spades}{k-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{8-Spades}. Campanello checked, and Bjerno fired out 8,000 into a pot of around 12,000. Campanello tank-called, only to muck when Bjerno turned over {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts} for a set of nines.

Bonsack Turns to Voodoo for Luck

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante
Mark Bonsack at the WSOP Circuit Horseshoe Council Bluffs final table.
Mark Bonsack at the WSOP Circuit Horseshoe Council Bluffs final table.

Mark Bonsack of Cle Elum, Washington, who qualified for the event after finishing as the Horseshoe Council Bluffs Casino Champion, is a wild character. At the final table of the Council Bluffs Main Event Bonsack grabbed some attention with his camo/Japanese headband garb, proving that he's not afraid to adopt unconventional methods if it helps him to win.

Case in point ... a raccoon penis. It's true. Bonsack explained last night that he visited a local voodoo shop here in New Orleans and asked the girl working, who he described as "goth" with "piercings all over the place," for something that would bring him luck. She promptly gave him a raccoon baculum.

Bonsack didn't say how much he paid for the "lucky charm," but he seemed to believe that it would actually bring him luck in today's event. Only time will tell if that proves true.

Here's hoping he doesn't use it as a card protector!

Selbst Off to a Good Start

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

At-large qualifier Josh Reichard opened for 325 under the gun and received calls from Vanessa Selbst and Aaron Massey in the hijack and small blind respectively. After Massey checked the {j-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{8-Hearts} flop, Reichard bet 425 and only Selbst called.

Reichard kept the pressure on with a bet of 900 on the {4-Spades}, but he couldn't shake Selbst. When the {5-Spades} completed the board on the river, Reichard bet again, this time 1,750, and Selbst tossed in a call. Reichard tabled the {A-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} for ace high, and then Selbst rolled over the {J-Clubs}{10-Clubs} to claim the pot.

Gross vs. Racener

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

We caught the action with approximately 5,000 already in the pot and a board reading {8-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}. 2010 World Series of Poker Main event Runner-up John Racener checked from the big blind and "Professional Best Friend" Jeff Gross did the same from the button.

Both players repeated the action on the {7-Diamonds} river and Racener tabled the {5-Spades}{5-Hearts}. It was good as Gross mucked his hand. Hey, we didn't say it was going to be a big hand, it just gave us a good excuse to update you on their stacks.

Sylvia Headed in the Right Direction

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

Both Joey Weissman and Jesse Sylvia, who both graced the top 100 WSOP POY, opted to fork over the $10,000 buy-in for this event and are seated at the same table.

With 3,200 or so in the pot and a board reading{6-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}, Weissman checked and Sylvia bet 2,000. Weissman responded with a check-raise to 4,800, Sylvia called and then both players checked the {8-Clubs} river. Weissman tabled the {4-Spades}{4-Diamonds}, but it was no good as Sylvia held the {6-Hearts}{7-Hearts} for a winning pair of sixes.
