The $1,700 Main Event is just one of a dozen gold ring events taking place at the Harrah’s Cherokee stop. For over a week, players have been competing for WSOP Circuit hardware and big chunks of prize money.

In Event #3: $400 No-Limit Hold’em One-Day, which saw 701 entrants take to the felt and create a $231,330 prize pool.

One of the runners was 22-year-old Alex Duvall of Charlotte, North Carolina, who was playing in just his second-ever poker tournament. Duvall made it all the way to the final table with just 10 big blinds, but he spun it up and defeated popular poker dealer Heather Alcorn in heads-up play to win the title, $43,480 in prize money, and his first gold ring.

“This is my first time playing in the WSOP, other than flight C yesterday,” Duvall explained, “I just play home games in Charlotte.”

He continued: “It feels surreal, like what the f**k just happened. Wow, it’s the most insane feeling I have ever had.”

Donovan Sends Cedric to the Tank

Level 15 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante

Zachary Donovan opened to 7,500 in middle position and Adam Cedric defended from the big blind. The flop came {10-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{3-Clubs} and both players checked to the {10-Clubs} on the turn.

Cedric checked again and Donovan made a delayed continuation bet of 11,000. Cedric called and the {4-Clubs} completed the board. Cedric checked for the third time and Donovan unleashed another barrel of 21,000. Cedric went into the tank for a couple of minutes and ultimately decided to fold his hand.

Phillips Loses Back-to-Back Flips vs Mandikos

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante

In back-to-back hands, Event #2 winner Tyler Phillips and Event #6 winner Nicholas Mandikos battled it out for all of the chips. In the first hand, Mandikos held pocket nines and held against Phillips' ace-king in order to score a double up.

The cards were back in the air and the two players got all of their chips in the middle again. Mandikos showed {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} again and was flipping with the {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} of Phillips.

The flop came {a-Clubs}{9-Spades}{9-Clubs} to give Mandikos quad nines and a stranglehold in the hand. The {3-Diamonds} on the turn meant Phillips was drawing dead to the {3-Spades} on the river. In a matter of two hands, Phillips lost all of his chips and was eliminated from the tournament.

There was a limper and Irene Carey completed in the small blind. The big blind checked his option and the dealer fanned the flop of {8-Hearts}{6-Spades}{4-Spades}.

Carey checked to her opponent who bet 12,000 and Carey check-raised to 27,000. Her opponent called and the {j-Hearts} landed on the turn. Carey jammed all in for 29,000 and her opponent tanked for nearly two minutes before finally folding.

Dalton Spikes a Two-Outer

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante

As the end of the day looms on the horizon with 60 players remaining, Kendall Dalton found himself all in for 82,000. Dalton was in desperate need of some help from the poker gods when he found himself in a cooler scenario.

Dalton tabled {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} but was up against his opponent's {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}. However, the dealer spread the flop of {k-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{5-Clubs} to give Dalton a full house and the lead in the hand. The {6-Diamonds} on the turn and the {8-Hearts} on the river changed nothing, allowing Dalton to find a much-needed double up.
