New Takes Out Smith

Level 9 : 400/800, 800 ante

WSOP Bracelet winner Alex Ziskin raised to 1,800 from under the gun, and Kenton New called in middle position. Ernest "Smitty" Smith three-bet shoved for 7,500 from the cutoff, and the button called off his last 800 in chips. Ziskin called, as did New.

Action checked through the entire {6-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{2-Spades}{3-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} board, and the button tabled {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds} for an unimproved Big Slick. New tabled {a-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} for a pair of threes, Ziskin mucked, and Smith could only muster {k-Spades}{j-Diamonds}, earning New a double knockout.

Van Sanford Catches a Bluff

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante

Three players saw the turn of a {6-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}{9-Spades}{8-Diamonds} board, and the small blind led out for 2,800. Ryan Van Sanford raised to 8,000 from the big blind, and after the button folded, the small blind called.

The small blind shoved for his last 21,000 when the {a-Diamonds} fell on the river, and Van Sanford thought for a few moments before making the call, tabling {j-Clubs}{10-Hearts} for a straight. His opponent turned over {j-Hearts}{7-Hearts} for a busted draw, then hit the rail.

Real Estate Investor Matt Sterling Claims Second Gold Ring

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante

The PokerNews Live Reporting Team is at the Horseshoe Southern Indiana in the Louisville area to live report the $1,700 Main Event; however, that is just one of more than a dozen gold ring events that have taken place over the past week. As such, we thought we’d profile some of the preliminary tournaments and those who struck it big.

Event #5: $600 Pot-Limit Omaha Freezeout had 63 players create a $32,445 prize pool that was paid out to the top 10 players. After Ryan Dersch exited in 10th place for $860, the final table was set.

Eventually, the title came down to Matt Sterling and Charlie Dawson, with the former ultimately coming out on top to the tune of $10,578. It marked his second career gold ring.

“I definitely felt like I had a decent chance to win, only five of us left and I had more than an average stack,” said Sterling, a real estate investor. “I am actually heading to Las Vegas tomorrow to watch a golf tournament, so I won’t be playing in any other events this series.”
