Ace-Jack Works For Smith

Level 7 : 300/500, 500 ante

Daniel Sepiol raised to 1,300 from middle position, and was called by Jerod Smith in the hijack, the cutoff, Dustin Mistelske in the small blind, and the big blind.

Action checked to Smith on an {a-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} flop, and he bet 2,500. Everyone except Mistelske called.

The {4-Clubs} turn and {q-Spades} river were checked down, and Smith turned over {a-Clubs}{j-Spades}. All of his opponents mucked.

Smith breathed a sigh of relief and said, "I dunno how..." as he pulled in the pot.

James Can't Show a Bluff

Level 7 : 300/500, 500 ante
Robert James
Robert James

On a {10-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{3-Spades} flop, action checked over to the hijack, who bet 3,500 into a pot of 6,000. Robert James called on the button, and the blinds folded.

Both players checked the {4-Clubs} turn, and the {q-Spades} hit the river. The hijack bet 3,000, and James raised to 12,000.

"If you show me a bluff, I'll give you money out of my pocket," the hijack told James after a few moments of thought. The hijack eventually folded, flashing the {a-Clubs} and saying, "Ace-ten."

James turned over {q-Clubs}{10-Hearts} for two pair on the river, and the hijack told James, "One of these days, you're not going to river me..."

Family Man Matthew Dunn Captures First Gold Ring

Level 8 : 300/600, 600 ante
Matthew Dunn

The PokerNews Live Reporting Team is at the Horseshoe Southern Indiana in the Louisville area to live report the $1,700 Main Event; however, that is just one of more than a dozen gold ring events that have taken place over the past week. As such, we thought we’d profile some of the preliminary tournaments and those who struck it big.

For instance, Event #4: $400 No-Limit Hold’em 6-Handed had 160 runners compete for a $52,800 prize pool. That was paid out to the top 24 players including Mark Boggs (10th - $1,205), Jerod Smith (13th - $802), Kayeen Elliskemp (20th - $688), and Kevin Sherrill (24th - $611).

In the end, 33-year-old Matthew Dunn from Fort Wayne, Indiana came out on top to win the title $13,828 in prize money, and his first gold ring.

“I definitely thought I was going to win. Got to have confidence in this game,” he said after a two-hour heads-up match. “It was a battle really, I was short, then she was short and back and forth. I just kept my cool and grinded.”

He added: “I am not sure yet, we extended our stay a couple more days, but I have two young kids waiting on me at home.”

Kenton New limped in from the hijack, and Ernest "Smitty" Smith raised to 1,600 on the button. The big blind called, as did New.

Action checked to Smith on a {10-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{6-Clubs} flop, and he bet 2,500. Only New called.

New checked the {k-Clubs} turn, and Smith bet 4,700. New called again.

New lead out for 6,000 when the {q-Hearts} fell on the river, and Smith folded.

Harvell Soaring, Raghavan Enters

Level 8 : 300/600, 600 ante

Justin Harvell raised to 1,800 from under the gun, and was called by the player next to act, as well as the small blind.

The small blind checked a {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{5-Hearts} flop to Harvell, who continued for 2,400. Both of his opponents folded, and Harvell padded his already massive six-figure stack.

Former WPT Five Diamond champ Ravi Raghavan just took a seat at Harvell's table, while Earl Potter, who was previously seated at the table, is no longer in the tournament area.

Beck Flops the World and Gets There

Level 8 : 300/600, 600 ante

With 16,000 already in the middle and a {k-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{q-Hearts} flop out, Bob Beck got his last 26,400 in the middle from middle position, and the hijack called to put him at risk.

Bob Beck: {j-Hearts}{10-Hearts}
Opponent: {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}

Beck had flopped a Royal Flush draw against the top pair, top kicker of the hijack. The {2-Clubs} turn was a total brick for Beck, but the {9-Spades} river left Beck with the nuts and a double.

Mistelske Runs Into Sepiol's Set

Level 8 : 300/600, 600 ante

Neil Harding checked an {a-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{2-Spades} board from the big blind, and Dustin Mistelske bet 6,700 into a pot of 10,000 from early position. Next to act, Daniel Sepiol raised to 16,000, and after Harding folded, Mistelske made the call.

Mistelske bet 34,000 on the {5-Hearts} river, and Sepiol instantly declared all in for just 100 more, which Mistelske called with a shrug. Sepiol tabled {j-Hearts}{j-Clubs} for a set of jacks, and Mistelske was forced to reveal his {a-Spades}{8-Spades} before paying off the extra 100.
