Apter Crushes, Hawkins Bags Solid Stack on Day 1b

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Brett Apter
Brett Apter

After a tough finish to Day 1a, Brett Apter came back for more on Day 1b of WSOP Circuit Ameristar St. Charles $1,700 Main Event. He put together a banner day to join the one-member 500,000 club, finishing the night with 516,000 after a hard stop was once again reached at 16% of the field.

Apter has made WSOP events his personal stomping ground in recent years, collecting two rings and a bracelet to the tune of $675K in winnings.

Here in Ameristar St. Charles, Apter found two kings to be his weapon of choice. He twice won large pots with the cowboys. First, he scooped up a three-way all in, easily fading players holding eight-four suited and ace-queen suited. Then, he bet-called for stacks with three threes on the board, his full house pipping an opponent who held queens and check-jammed.

From, there, it was a simple matter of applying pressure in the right spots as the bagging bubble neared.

Another Circuit stalwart also had a solid showing as all-time ring leader Maurice Hawkins bagged 199,000. While that number is a bit below where Hawkins climbed when he was around the 300,000 mark, it's still going to be good for 50 big blinds when Day 2 play commences.

Others finding bags included Jon Lawson (325,000), Tim Vance (320,000), Nic Ditrapani (279,000) and Heather Alcorn (206,000).

The 173 entries pushed the two-flight total to 281, edging the tournament past the $400,000 guarantee. The prize pool was confirmed late in the day, with the winner to receive $92,886 and a WSOPC gold ring.

A total of 46 players have earned their ways to Day 2, and they'll return at noon on Sunday. The earlier hard stop on Day 1a means there will be just over 49 minutes left at 2,000/4,000/4,000. Come back to PokerNews to follow the Main Event to the late stages.

Apter's Kings Pay Off Big

Level 14 : 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Brett Apter
Brett Apter

With about 60,000 in the pot, Brett Apter bet 34,000 in middle position. The board read {3-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} and his opponent under the gun announced all in. Apter quickly called and showed {k-}{k-}. He was crushing {q-}{q-} and the {j-Diamonds} river was a pip lower than Apter's opponent needed. Apter covered his 120,000 or so and scooped a massive pot.

Three-Way All in to Apter

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Brett Apter
Brett Apter

A middle player opened to 4,200, a player shoved in the hijack for 26,000 and Brett Apter called in the cutoff. The small blind stuck in his 13,700 and the opener thought about 30 seconds and folded.

Apter: {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}
Small blind: {8-Hearts}{4-Hearts}
Hijack: {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}

The small blind was dismayed to see his hearts were dead, and it didn't wind up mattering as the board ran {2-Spades}{6-Clubs}{6-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}.

"Dirty Cooler" for a Rystrom Dub Through Alcorn

Level 9 : 400/800, 800 ante
Heather Alcorn
Heather Alcorn

Tim Rystrom bet 5,200 from early position on an {a-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{4-Clubs} flop and got called by the player on his left. Heather Alcorn woke up with an all-in shove from the small blind, covering everyone else in the hand. Rystrom took some time then called off his 32,000. His neighbor tank-folded.

"I smell a set and a combo draw," someone else said, until it was revealed to be {a-Hearts}{7-Clubs} for Alcorn against {4-Hearts}{4-Spades} for Rystrom. "Nope just a dirty cooler. Dirty, dirty cooler."

That was indeed the situation, and the {9-Hearts} turn and {10-Hearts} river both did nothing for Alcorn, forcing her to send over a double.

Wild Pot Three-Bet Pot to Ham

Level 6 : 200/400, 400 ante
WSOPC Ameristar St. Charles Main Event Day 1b
WSOPC Ameristar St. Charles Main Event Day 1b

Mack Ham opened for 1,100 early, Mikey Esquivel called in the hijack and Hal Rotholz made it 4,600 in the cutoff. They went three ways to {3-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} for that price and action checked to Rotholz. He bet 5,000, Ham made it 10,000, and Esquivel shipped it for 17,400. Rotholz shoved and Ham snap-called.

Ham: {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}
Rotholz: {k-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}
Esquivel: {5-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}

Esquivel had gotten lucky with his rags, but Ham shot in front when the {a-Diamonds} turn gave him top set. The {5-Hearts} river wasn't enough for Esquivel and Ham collected Esquivel's stack, as well as 37,000 or so from Rotholz.

Apter Doubles Through Hawkins

Level 5 : 200/300, 300 ante
Brett Apter
Brett Apter

A battle of two of the more accomplished players on the Circuit went to Brett Apter as he doubled through Maurice Hawkins in a multi-way pot. We didn't catch flop action but Hawkins bet the turn on {9-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} and Apter called from the big blind and checked the {6-Spades} river. With 9,000 in the pot, Hawkins bet 3,000 and Apter shoved for about 9,000.

Hawkins muttered to himself about how he'd gotten himself into a bad spot but made the call. Apter showed {5-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} for a flush, and Hawkins mucked what the dealer revealed to be {a-}{q-}.

Welcome to Day 1b of 2020 WSOP Circuit St. Ameristar St. Charles Main Event

WSOPC Ameristar St. Charles Main Event
WSOPC Ameristar St. Charles Main Event

One flight is in the books, leaving one starting flight remaining at World Series of Poker Circuit Ameristar St. Charles $1,700 Main Event. That mouthful out of the way, it is indeed time for Day 1b, set for an 11 a.m. kickoff here in the St. Louis area.

Day 1a saw Austin McCormick and Matthew Levin dominate en route to bagging more than 500,000 and 400,000, respectively, as 18 total players advanced. As a hard stop was reached with about 49 minutes left in the final level, the same schedule can likely be expected today.

Once again, players will sit down with 30,000 in their starting stacks and blinds at 100/100 if they arrive during the first 40 minutes. Stakes escalate until 2,000/4,000/4,000 is played, with players allowed one reentry apiece during that time. A total of 15 full levels will be played.

With only 108 entries on Day 1a, the guarantee ($400,000) is only about 40% of the way toward being met, so players around the Midwest would be well-advised to head to the lovely property and take their shots at this prize pool. Keep an eye on PokerNews to see how big the money gets and who on Day 1b best positions themselves for it.
