Beetz Out the Window

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

Bradley Beetz was in late position and shoved over an open and a three-bet by Blake Jakel. It was about 30,000, and Jakel made the call, though he wasn't excited about it. He was happy to be flipping with {a-Spades}{q-Clubs} against {10-}{10-}, and he paired up on the window card to send Beetz out.

Patel Crushed With Top Pair

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante

Both blinds checked to Wayne Whittinghill, who bet 32,000 from under the gun with about 5,000 back on an {8-Clubs}{5-Spades}{q-Clubs} flop. That was more than double the size of the pot. He tried to move his last chips in but the dealer stopped him.

"I think they get the picture," Whittinghill said.

Neil Patel reshoved in the small blind to chase out Greg Jennings.

"Damn," Patel said, upon seeing his {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds} was smashed by {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}.

The turn and river brought the {2-Hearts} and {3-Hearts} and Whittinghill doubled up.

Lawson Catches Davenport

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante

Jon Lawson checked out of the big blind on a completed board of {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{k-Spades}. David Davenport bet 15,000, half the pot, from a couple of seats over, and Lawson grimaced. He nonetheless called about 15 seconds later, and Davenport indicated it was a winning call. Lawson showed {j-Hearts}{8-Hearts}.

Three-Way All in to Apter

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Brett Apter
Brett Apter

A middle player opened to 4,200, a player shoved in the hijack for 26,000 and Brett Apter called in the cutoff. The small blind stuck in his 13,700 and the opener thought about 30 seconds and folded.

Apter: {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}
Small blind: {8-Hearts}{4-Hearts}
Hijack: {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}

The small blind was dismayed to see his hearts were dead, and it didn't wind up mattering as the board ran {2-Spades}{6-Clubs}{6-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}.

PokerNews is in town to live report the $1,700 Main Event here at the World Series of Poker Circuit Ameristar St. Charles, but that is just on gold ring event that will have played out by the end of the series.

In Event #7: $250 No-Limit Hold’em, 120 runners created a $24,000 prize pool that was paid out to the top 18 players including Steven Wills (3rd - $2,825), Chris Bibb (8th - $665), Rodney Spriggs (12th - $469), and Jerod Smith (18th - $383).

In the end, John Gallaher of Lebanon, Tennessee beat Blake O’Brien in heads-up play to win the title for $6,682 and his fourth gold ring.

“You know the first one is always the most surreal and I won my first one about eight years ago when I was about eight levels worse than I am now,” Gallaher joked. “I just know I have improved so much, especially in the last year and half, it feels good.”

The 53-year-old optometrist continued: “I feel like it’s just the 10,000-hour thing where all of the sudden everything is clicking. I know where I am at in hands and I am getting the value … It doesn’t matter how good you play sometimes, you have to run good as well. My nickname is ‘Johnny rungood’ though for a reason.”
