Doyle's Banners

There are four huge banner pictures above Doyle Brunson's head as he plays in this event. Sailor Roberts and Amarillo Slim, his old road buddies, plus Puggy Pearson and Johnny Moss. All WSOP main event winners. Doyle, with his surviving old friends from the past, could write a best-selling book on their adventures and exploits over the past 40 years. Doyle would have to stop playing poker to have the time -- and that's just not going to happen any time soon.

Doyle Brunson Takes Hit

Doyle Brunson raises in the small blind and Rick Schwartz calls in the big blind. The flop is {8-Spades}{6-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}. Brunson bets and Schwartz raises. Brunson calls. The turn is {J-Clubs}. Brunson checks. Schwartz bets. Brunson calls. The river is {8-Clubs}. Brunson checks. Schwartz bets. Brunson calls. Brunson has A-Q and Schwartz has {3-Clubs}{3-Spades} for the win.

Duck Soup

At the end of the Hold'em level, something really amusing happened:

First, Sam Grizzle cracks aces with {9-Hearts}{2-Hearts} on a board of {K-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{8-Spades}{3-Clubs}{J-Hearts}. He bets on the river and says, "I made duck soup," with the flush. What does that even mean?

Then, Phil Ivey makes duck soup out of Grizzle. Ivey has {Q-Spades}{10-Spades} against Grizzle on a board of {10-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{9-Spades}. Ivey's pair of tens are good and Ivey is up to 115,000. Grizzle has 40,000.

We still don't know what that means.

"What an Idiot I Am."

Gavin Smith is all in with A-J calling for a three on the river. "Three!" "Three!" The river is in fact a {9-Spades} and the opponent turns over pocket threes. Smith wins the hand as the complete board is {J-Spades}{4-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{9-Spades}. "What an idiot I am, calling for a 3," Smith says. He's at 75,000.

Cards are In the Air

The decision has been made to play to two tables and 4 a.m. PDT. If we hit 4 a.m. and two tables (16 players) still aren't reached, we play on. If two tables are reached before 4 a.m., we play until 4 a.m.

Got all that?
