Ron Matusek Doubles Up Leon Lewis

Lewis raised to 40K in the cutoff and Matusek called from the big blind. The flop came {J-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{9-Hearts} and Matusek pushed with {A-Spades}{10-Spades}. Lewis made the call with {A-Clubs}{5-Clubs} and he hit the {9-Clubs} on the turn to make his flush. The {7-Clubs} on the river didn't help Matusek and his stack was reduced to 105,000, while Lewis moved up to 310K.

Counterfeited

After Ed Smith raised to 45,000 from the cutoff, Charles Anderson moved all-in with A-K. Smith called with pocket Sevens, and the flop of 9-J-J looked to be a good one. As did the 8 that hit on the turn. But when the board paired Eights on the river it counterfeited Smith's smaller pair and Anderson's Ace played. "I didn't even know I won, that's how dumb I am," Anderson said.

"Then leave," quipped Tony Korfman.

Albert Ethier and William Sheffey Are Eliminated

Ethier went out when he moved in with J-8, and was called by Marvin DeVore holding A-K. DeVore flopped an King and that ended Ethier's day.

Sheffey's exit was of the waking nightmare variety. He moved all-in for his last 99,000 after Ernest Bennett raised from the cutoff. Bennett called with {Q-Clubs}{10-Hearts}, Sheffey had pocket Aces.

The flop came {Q-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}, giving Bennett a pair and gutshot draw. The {4-Spades} was innocent enough, but on the river was the {J-Spades}, cracking Sheffey's Aces and sending him out in 22nd place.

The Snake Wins a Huge Pot

The board reads {2-Spades}{7-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{9-Spades}. Jack Maresca has already put the last of his chips in. Thomas Catanzaro asks Jack "The Staten Island Snake" Deutsch how much he has left. After learning the count, Catazaro sets Deutsch all-in.

Deutsch takes his plastic coiled snakes off his chips. He says, "I can't beat a straight, I can't beat anything else." He asks what place he'd finish if he calls. He thinks a bit . . . and the Snake calls.

Maresca has {J-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}. Catanzaro has {K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}. And Deutsch? "THE SNAKE HAS THE POCKET BULLETS BABY!!" he shouts. "Eight!" Catanzaro yells, and Deutsch screams that ONE TIME he doesn't want to see an eight. And the dealer burns and turns over the {7-Spades} and Deutsch and he's friends go crazy. "LET ME HEAR FROM THE SNAKE PIT!!" he yells and his friends on the rail shout back. This might be the most boisterous table I've seen at the World Series so far.
