Flush Draw On The River

Bill Gazes
Bill Gazes
Flop: {Q-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{3-Spades}

Bill Gazes was heads-up against a single opponent. Both players checked the flop, but when the {Q-Clubs} fell on the turn, Gazes called a 300 bet by his opponent. The river was the {7-Diamonds} and Gazes made it 750 to go. After thinking for a moment, his opponent made the call and Gazes turned over {J-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} while his opponent showed {A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} and won the hand with two-pair, queens and sevens with an ace kicker.

"Had a flush draw on the river," Gazes joked. "Not bluffing anymore today."

Nelly Loses Chips

On a board of {Q-Spades}{J-Clubs}{2-Spades}{A-Spades}{A-Clubs}, Nelly bet 1,500 and he was raised 5,000 by a player. Nelly called with A-9. His opponent flipped over A-J for a full house. After that hand, Nelly slipped to 11,000.

Poker Tent Down to Five Tables

As promised, the players who started the day in the poker tent are the first to move into the Amazon Room when seats become available. But rather than just pass out the open seat cards, a table is first broken in the main room, and then the poker tent players are brought in as a complete table. So any bonding that they experienced out in the tent can continue a little while longer.

There are still five tables out in the poker tent, including T.J. Cloutier's table.

Frank Kassela Eliminated

With a short stack, Frank Kassela shoved with {6-Clubs}{5-Clubs} on a board of {8-Spades}{4-Spades}{3-Clubs}. He was called by a player with {4-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}. He was behind but had an open-ended straight draw. The turn was the {9-Clubs} and the river was the {6-Hearts}. Kassela's hand could not improve and he's out.

Mr. Peanut In the Room

Jeffrey Pollack's team has spent a lot of time and energy attracting more mainstream sponsors to the World Series of Poker. In past years we could count on a beer company and one of the drug companies pushing the latest impotence drug.

Yes, Milwaukee's Best is still a sponsor, but they've been joined by more family-friendly companies like Hershey's and Planters Peanuts.

The past few days, a giant Mr. Peanut character has been walking around the World Series, shaking hands and greeting people. Just like the costumed characters at Disneyland, Mr. Peanut has a handler with him at all times to help him get through tight spaces and keep people from kicking him in the butt.

Most of the people who have seen Mr. Peanut here have reacted positively, shaking his hand or exclaiming, "Hey, it's Mr. Peanut!" He may not have the Q-rating of Mickey Mouse, but there's really no reason to hate Mr. Peanut.

Now if only Planters could put up some money into the prizepool ... then the players would *love* Mr. Peanut.

Yesterday, Mr. Peanut walked up to one of the larger floormen ready to shake his hand. The floorman stepped back and said, "Get that hand away from me." After a short but dramatic pause, he added, "I only take hugs." Mr. Peanut gave him the hug he was looking for, drawing some laughter from those nearby.

About 1,000 to 1

Mike Panzarella was eliminated on what was close to a 1,000-to-1 shot. The board was {A-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{8-Spades}. Panzarella held A-A and got what he thought was the perfect flop... a set of aces on a rainbow board. He fired out 7K on the river hoping to entice some action with his full house. His opponent, Takaski Takii, re-raised all in and Panzarella quickly called. Takii flipped over {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts} for quads. He caught two perfect cards to send Panzarella to the rail.

The odds are slightly under 1,000-to-1 that a player with a pocket pair with no help on the flop will get running cards for quads. Panzarella's exit seems unbelievable, but one of our reporters happened to be walking by his table when his Armageddon unfolded.

Nelly Eliminated

It's not so hot in herre after Nelly busted out. He had less than 10K left when he moved all in on a flop of {K-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{2-Hearts}. He held {K-Hearts}{9-Clubs}. His opponent showed {4-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}. The turn was the {2-Clubs} and the river was the {4-Diamonds}. Nelly's hand did not improve and he headed to the rail.

Gavin Griffin Makes a Sick Call

Gavin Griffin
Gavin Griffin
Per Ummer opened the pot for 1,000 and Gavin Griffin called from the button. The flop was {Q-Hearts}{10-Spades}{8-Spades}. Ummer bet 1,900 and Griffin called. The turn was the {10-Hearts}. Ummer bet 3,000 and Griffin called. The river was the {2-Clubs}. Ummer bet 4,500 and Griffin called.

At the end of the hand, Ummer said "king high." Griffin turned over {A-Clubs}{J-Spades} and took down the pot with only ace high.

Griffin was up to 38,000 after the hand.
