A Face (and a Streak) in the Crowd

Perry Friedman and his red stripe
Perry Friedman and his red stripe
As a reporter surfing the rail, looking for color stories to add to the PokerNews.com blog, you'll come across some interesting fans. We noticed a man and wife with identical red streaks in their hair, who were carrying a picture of the whole family as well as their two dogs Bogie and Spencer, all with the same red streaks. How cute!

In talking further, we found out they were Ira and Ellen Friedman, parents of often flamboyant poker player Perry Friedman, who has worn that red streak in his hair throughout this year's WSOP. How's that for family support?

Perry is bright, articulate, and was valedictorian of his high school class. A top math and science student, Perry was accepted at Harvard, Brown, MIT and Stanford, electing to attend the latter, where he earned both a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree in Computer Science.

Perry was one of the original employees of Tiltware, which designed the software for Full Tilt Poker. He won a WSOP bracelet in Omaha hi-lo in 2002 and played a number of events at this year's Series, making the final table of Event #28 ($3,000 no-limit hold'em) and ultimately finishing 7th.

Along with Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, Perry's in the audience this evening sweating fellow Full Tilt Pro Lee Watkinson.

Outer Table: Jon Kalmar Takes One to the River

Action folds around to Jon Kalmar who limps in from the button. Lee Watkinson elects to call from the small blind and Steven Garfinkle checks his big blind option. The players take a flop of...

{A-Spades}{K-Spades}{3-Spades}

Watkinson and Garfinkle both check, and Kalmar bets 350,000. Watkinson passes but Garfinkle looks him up. It's heads up to the turn card which is the {Q-Diamonds}. Both players check. The river brings the {K-Diamonds}. Garfinkle checks and Kalmar pushes out 1,000,000 chips. Garfinkle folds and Kalmar wins the pot.

Dispatches from the Men's Room

Two players came into the bathroom on the break and began a conversation about how many chips they had.

"13 million," one said.

"Oh, you have to have 15 million after that last hand," the other replied.

"I don't know, but every time there's a raise or anything, there are cameras in my face to get reactions and stuff. Who edits all this stuff in a room?"

The two players are having a casual, matter-of-fact conversation about how many millions are sitting in front of them. Neither notices the poor guy mopping up the floor going right by them. One can only wonder what he's thinking.

It's just another day at the WSOP. It's a crazy scene that must be seen to be believed.

Featured Table: Philip Hilm Takes a 2.54 Million Pot Against Tuan Lam

Philip Hilm
Philip Hilm
Raymond Rahme has the button in seat 7, Philip Hilm raises from the cutoff to 480,000, and Tuan Lam calls from the big blind. The flop comes {A-Diamonds}{J-Spades}{5-Hearts}, and both players check. The turn card is the {9-Spades}, Lam bets 700,000, and Hilm calls. There is now 2.54 million in the pot.

The river card is the {8-Hearts}, Lam checks, Hilm thinks for a minute before he bets 1.5 million, and Lam folds, leaving himself with about 18.75 million. Philip Hilm takes the pot.

Featured Table: Raymond Rahme vs. Scotty Nguyen

Lee Childs has the button in seat 9, Raymond Rahme raises from the cutoff to 450,000, Scotty Nguyen reraises from the big blind to 950,000, and Rahme calls. The flop comes {8-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{4-Clubs}, and both players check. The turn card is the {9-Spades}, Nguyen checks, Rahme bets 750,000, and Nguyen thinks for about 30 seconds before he calls. The river card is the {7-Clubs}, and both players check. Rahme shows {A-Hearts}{9-Hearts} for a pair of nines, and Nguyen mucks. Raymond Rahme wins the pot.
