Witteles Doubles

Todd Witteles and Gregory Schillewaert got all the chips in preflop. Schillewaert was ahead with a pair of black queens; the Big Slick of Witteles overtook him when a king hit the flop. Schillewaert was sent to the rail and Witteles now has approximately 43,000 chips.

David Bach Flexing

Coming in to today with the chip lead, it is apparent that David Bach showed up with a game plan. He has been especially active here in the early stages, involved in nearly every pot so far.

In his latest hand, Thomas Sebourn decided to tangle with the big stack. Bach made a raise under the gun to 2,400, and action was folded around to Sebourn on the button. He re-raised all in for about 12,000, and Bach quickly called.

Bach showed {A-Hearts} {K-Diamonds} , and Sebourn had {J-Clubs} {J-Diamonds} . The {K-Hearts} {10-Clubs} {7-Spades} on the flop hit Bach, and the {2-Spades} {6-Spades} that followed could not save Sebourn. He is elminated just shy of the money, while Bach has chipped up close to 120,000.

Divergent Attitudes

It has not been a good start to the day for Kenny Tran. His Big Slick went down in flames again, this time to the queens of David Bannister. Tran did pick up a small side pot in the hand but appears generally frustrated. He has had words a few times with the dealer at his table for not counting out chips well.

On the other hand, Shane 'shaniac' Schleger is as cool as a cucumber. With hand-for-hand play commenced, Schleger has started reading a copy of today's newspaper.

Level Nine Continues

Bubble Time
Bubble Time
Despite the clock expiring on level nine play, it was announced that blinds will stay 500/1000 with a 100 ante until the money bubble has burst.

Inching Closer

Two hands have been completed since hand-for-hand play started, resulting in the elimination of three players. No doubt the short stacks have taken a "turtle" approach, hoping to slip into the money, now just 10 bust-outs away.

Meeting of the Minds

A lot of players are up and wandering around now that we are hand for hand. Perry Friedman and Chris Ferguson just had a little get-together, as their tables are nearly adjacent to each other.

A player from a different table wandered over and approached Perry, inquiring about his haircut. Friedman obliged the player with a quick camera phone picture, and Ferguson joined the conversation.

"We tried to get him to do it too," Friedman said, pointing at Ferguson, "but he wouldn't go for it."

The three men shared a chuckle as Jack Effel made the announcement for players to return to their seat.

Cracked Aces Result in a Huge Double

We caught up with this hand on the turn. With the board showing {Q-Clubs} {8-Spades} {7-Spades} {10-Spades} , Arnaud Mattern bet 9,600. His opponent, YM Hu, made the call. Mattern pushed the river {4-Hearts} for almost 26,000.

Hu had Mattern covered and agonized over the call for almost five minutes. A large crowd of players gathered around the table, hoping that Hu would bust Mattern. Hu did eventually make the call with pocket aces. He saw the bad news when Mattern showed him {10-Clubs} {7-Clubs} for a turned two pair.

Mattern now has almost 60,000 chips.

A Great Time for Aces

Alex Trujano, hanging on with just 15,000 chips, must have been happy to look at his cards and see black aces after Howard Boyd moved all in ahead of him for 13,000. When Boyd showed {A-Hearts} {K-Diamonds}, Trujano must have been ecstatic. The board came out 9-high, sending Boyd to the rail just five spots from the money.
